CHRISTOFFERSEN I'ri11a'i1n1I The questions, What is the spirit of West High School? , How has it been developed? , and What best exemplifies it?,' are not easy to answer. l do not believe that it can be measured by the noise we make at pep meetings, nor by the number of parties which we have during the school year. I do feel it is in part exemplified in the following illustrations: A parent informed me that there was little danger of her child getting into trouble on week nights because he had so much home work to do. It is a good sign when the school and the community respect and demand a high standard of scholarship. Speakers and paid performers who contact hun- dreds of school audiences invariably remark, 'KMy, what a fine group you havclu Our athletic teams, drama. music, and publica- tion groups rise to their highest pitch of excellence when the occasion demands. Accepting a challenge and rising to the occasion typifies an important segment of West High tra- dition. -R. O. ctllRISTOFFERSEN SAM MR. G. A. STEINER lf.f.Vl.5l!II1I Principal Leadership is needed in the world today as never beforeg will you help? Remember, that in the United States it has always been each man,s desire to reach a little higher, to strive constantly for the better things in life. ln so doing, he has developed a Constitution which guarantees himself and his children the rights of the Four Freedoms. lt is this striving, also, which has made the United States the Mecca of the world. If each of you will forward these same ideas and apply the Golden Rule to all peoples of the world, then world leadership by you will be assured. -Guo. A. Well. it's not only a good class- it's the biggest class ever! Hon-est! It seems that this class has always set a size recordg biggest in Iunior I-Iigh, biggest in Senior High, biggest to graduate! And with Silas Hap Iohnson as President, Tom Ripp as Vice-President, and Mary Lou Sorensen as Secretary, how could it help being not only the biggest, but the best! Well, really, it's no wonder I'm excited! It's been a wonderful year for this class, too. You know, several new traditions were started by this class. F'r instance, that new publication, Patterns in Print. I really got enthused about that! Somebody should have thought of that long ago! And how about Mood Indigo, the Art Angle for- mal? Wasn't that a swell idea? And the pep meetings -- they were really inspired! Everyone had a wonderful time! i Coupon Book Sales: The beginning of a new year. lltll The Big Four- Our class ofhcers and advisor: Mary Lou Sorensen, Secre- taryg Tom Ripp, Viee-Presi- dentg Silas Hap Iohnson, Presidentg Mr. Gordon Bur- gess, Advisorg and Sam, the Spirit. We're pretty proud of our class for originating Double' Quartet, too. We've needed something like that for a long time. Some of our talented male singers have deserved an opportunity to dis- play their talents like the girls have in Triple Trio. And then there was that new activity point system. It certainly made it a lot harder to get an activity pin. In spite of these more difficult regulations there were twentyeight in our class able to get their pins. I could go on like this forever -but why? Everyone knows all of this anyway. But after all, I'm Sam. the Spirit, and gee whiz, I just have to rave about this class, don't I? While shy and sea and land And earth's foundations stand And heaven endures. William Maynard Humphreys was born Ianuary 17, 1930. He died Ianuary 25, 1948. His education started at Randall, and he th-en went to St. Iohn's Military Academy in Dela- Held. From there he went to Manlo Iunior College in Manlo Park, California. Last year he came back to Madison and West. Bill had only attended West for a short time, and for that reason had not participated in many activities. But we shall never forget his infectious smile, or the laugh and gentle- manly manner that went with it. 1281 JU IORS A D SDPHOMORES . . . The class of '48 is really the one that rates with me right now. l always have a soft spot in my heart for the seniors, 'cause live been their guiding 'spirit' for so long. l think l'll be too busy to miss them. though, because l have plenty to do. ln their time. these other classes will be favorites of mine, too. This year Mr. Harnack was my assistant in guiding the Iunior class. and Mr. Paugh did the honors for the Sophomores. Next in command for the Iuniors was that outstanding trio of Dick Roberts. Already these two classes have prov- en themselves to be worthy ol' West's tradition ol' line classes. That tradition is a challenge, but they'll get along all right because they have that fine quali- ty long associated with our school. l'll be in there rooting for them, along with all the grads thinking about West. On November 15 the West High grand curtain was opened on the lively comedy, Iunior Miss. The irrepressible ludy was played by Mary Trebilcock, with Pat Supernaw as her bouncy, unrestrained, best friend, Fuffy Adams. Di- rected by Mrs. Ruth McCarty, the cast also included Marcia Varney, Bob Hansch, Pris- cilla Ann Atwood, Carol Hanson, Ieanne Dudley, Tom Tubbs. and Iohn Lord, among the principals. The infectious, lilting gaiety of Gilbert and Sullivan cast its spell during The Mikado, the second production offered this year. The cast was directed by Miss Marion Huxtable, with Mr. Ernest Stanke conduct- ing the orchestra. Iapan was the setting for this musical treat.
