I Y T 1 f 5 X i'l ll S A1 i i i f -Qazunfv, The houselights dimmed, the crowd became quiet, and the curtain opened on the first dramatic produc- tion of the year, lane Austen's delightful comedy of manners, Pride and Prejudice, on Nov. 15 and l6. The play centered around the Bennet family in 18th century England. Papa Bennet, portrayed by Dave Birt, seemed to be surrounded by the feminine sex, namely his Highty, society-minded wife, Mary Snee, and his three daughters: Iane, the beauty-Nat Biartg Lydia, who promoted a scandal in the family- Carol Feldman: and Lizzie, the independent tomboy -Mary Fahlberg. The plot revolved around mama's marrying off her three young 'uns. She meets with success as she pairs nfl lane with Mr. Bingley-Don Iohnsong and Lydia clopes with the dashing Mr. Wickhem-Buddy Grif- fith. Mama meets her Waterloo, however, when it comes to Lizzie. The latter does the unheard of thing by turning down the offer of her wolhsh minister cousin, Mr. Collins-lack Edson. Instead, she pur- sues and is pursued by handsome, aristocratic Mr. Darcy-Chuck Webster. Despite obstacles in the form of Miss Bingley-Lois Miller, and Lady Catherine- Dolores Wallestad, both the pride and prejudice of Lizzie and Darcy are tossed aside in the final mo- ments, and love reigns supreme. The play was directed by Miss Mariam Hansen, who later left her teaching position to become Mrs. Robert Schilling. Her Majesty's Ship, Pinaforew pulled into harbor March 22 and 23 for the second production of the year, a musical directed by Miss Marion Huxtable, aided by Mrs. Ruth McCarty. West's first taste of Gilbert and Sullivan was indeed a memorable one. The Pinafore is the site where the captain's daugh- ter Iosephinefsj-Irmie Wolff and Nancy Iohnson, fall in love with a seaman aboard ship, Ralph Rack- straw-Raleigh Williams. She does this, regardless of the pleadings of her father, Captain Corcoran-Don Doerfer, to marry Sir Ioseph Porter-Ted Iltis. Adding a villainous note to the operetta was the malformed Dick Deadeye, played by Dale Sorden, who did his best to try to complicate matters. Butter- cup-Dolores Wallestad, comes to the rescue with solutions and songs to keep the ship and its love affairs on an even keel. Additional members of the principal cast were Hebe-Indy Vogel, Boatswain-George Steb- bins, and Boatswain's Mate-Dan Oliver. With the choruses of girls and sailors and various department advisors in addition to Miss Huxtable and Mrs. Mc- Carty, the splendid orchestral score of Mr. Stanke and his orchestra, the success of the operetta proved that weve an ear for music as well as an eye for drama. aa, i viii? 1 css! 5 lg 2. jf We Curtain call of Pride and Preiudiccu 6 WEST HIGH SCHOOL
