Maize and Blue Spring Sports The Maize and Blue volleyball team started the spring program successfully when it won West's own invitational volleyball meet. Schools entered were Lodi, Lake Mills, Portage, Edgerton, Lake Geneva, Stough- ton, Central, East, and West. The Regents knocked Central into the consolation bracket 6-l'5, 15-4, 15-2. Then in the linals West again beat the Downtowners 15-7, I5-Ill, to Win the meet. Tennis prospects were good, with lettermen War- ren Lucas and George Peterson leading a fine group of prospects. Also returning as veterans were Bob Felch, Dick Schubert, and the fine doubles team of lack Olds and Doug Stegner. The Regents were slated to defend their city championship in a heavy schedule of Madison dual meets and the city meet on May 22, 23, and 24. West also defended its Big Eight net title at Kenosha on May ll. The state meet was set for Iune l. The golf team was well set to repeat as city champ and better its 1945 third place in Big Eight standings. Returning lettermen were Doug Nordby, Roy Gustav- son, Bob Shehan, and Iohn Gonce. Others expected to bolster the team included Erv Graf, Dan Oliver, Tom Mould, Bill Hilsenhoff, Roy Baechler, and Dick Meier. The schedule included two dual meets apiece with East, Central, and Wisconsin High. The Big Eight meet was held on May 18 at Beloit, and the state tournament was set for Iune 1, with the team hoping to win the championship. - Team -- Four Lakes League More than a first team represented West on the basketball floor last winter. First among other cage teams we must mention the Regent li-team. This squad played preliminary games before each regular appearance of the Maize and Blue first team. The boys made a highly creditable showing in competition with city and Big Eight B-team rivals. Smothering all opposition from all schools in the league, the Regenaires and Bears won unde- feated honors in their respective sections. ln the post-season tournament, three West outfits did well. The Dodgers lost out in the quarter finals, and the Bears and Regenaires met in the finals, with the Regenaires winning a close one, 3l-28. Girls' Sports Bumps and bruises were the order of the day when speedball was introduced this year as the new fall sport. Miss Lillian Logemann, the advisor, who came to West this year from Racine, did a grand job in making the sport a big success. The championship team was led to victory by Dorothy Milbrandt, the team's captain. The volleyball tournament, headed by Na- dine Schuster, consisted of nine teams se- lected on a class basis. The winners were captained by Pauline Peck. Many ol' these girls took part in the volleyball play day held annually at West, with Ianesville, East, Cen- tral, and VVest participating. The day ended in a tie for Hrst between East and West. The Amazons, Ann Werneris eleventh grade team, was victorious in the hotly con- tested basketball tournament. Credit goes to Sally Shehan for the successful management of the games during Miss Logemamfs ab- sence. .f Bowling competition ended in early spring, with tennis, ping pong, and softball follow- ing later. Congratulations to all who turned out for after-school sports this year and to all who received their letters. lt was a job well done.
