The play centered around the Bennet family in 18th century England. Papa Bennet, portrayed by Dave Birt, seemed to be surrounded by the feminine sex, namely his Highty, society-minded wife, Mary Snee, and his three daughters: Iane, the beauty-Nat Biartg Lydia, who promoted a scandal in the family- Carol Feldman: and Lizzie, the independent tomboy -Mary Fahlberg. The plot revolved around mama's marrying off her three young 'uns. She meets with success as she pairs nfl lane with Mr. Bingley-Don Iohnsong and Lydia clopes with the dashing Mr. Wickhem-Buddy Grif- fith. Mama meets her Waterloo, however, when it comes to Lizzie. The latter does the unheard of thing by turning down the offer of her wolhsh minister cousin, Mr. Collins-lack Edson. Instead, she pur- sues and is pursued by handsome, aristocratic Mr. Darcy-Chuck Webster. Despite obstacles in the form of Miss Bingley-Lois Miller, and Lady Catherine- Dolores Wallestad, both the pride and prejudice of Lizzie and Darcy are tossed aside in the final mo- ments, and love reigns supreme. The play was directed by Miss Mariam Hansen, who later left her teaching position to become Mrs. Robert Schilling. Her Majesty's Ship, Pinaforew pulled into harbor March 22 and 23 for the second production of the year, a musical directed by Miss Marion Huxtable, aided by Mrs. Ruth McCarty. West's first taste of Gilbert and Sullivan was indeed a memorable one. The Pinafore is the site where the captain's daugh- ter Iosephinefsj-Irmie Wolff and Nancy Iohnson, fall in love with a seaman aboard ship, Ralph Rack- straw-Raleigh Williams. She does this, regardless of the pleadings of her father, Captain Corcoran-Don Doerfer, to marry Sir Ioseph Porter-Ted Iltis. Adding a villainous note to the operetta was the malformed Dick Deadeye, played by Dale Sorden, who did his best to try to complicate matters. Butter- cup-Dolores Wallestad, comes to the rescue with solutions and songs to keep the ship and its love affairs on an even keel. Additional members of the principal cast were Hebe-Indy Vogel, Boatswain-George Steb- bins, and Boatswain's Mate-Dan Oliver. With the choruses of girls and sailors and various department advisors in addition to Miss Huxtable and Mrs. Mc- Carty, the splendid orchestral score of Mr. Stanke and his orchestra, the success of the operetta proved that weve an ear for music as well as an eye for drama. aa, i viii? 1 css! 5 lg 2. jf We Curtain call of Pride and Preiudiccu 6 WEST HIGH SCHOOL WI l'rirlu .xml Prcimlicn- hCl'I1L'5Z Temp lcfl piculrrz Guru! lfulnlmnnn, Imlmu Wqnllwnul. luck Iimlwn, Mary Smw. Regents On The Gridiron With nine returning lettermen, four of them regu- lars on the 1945 championship team, prospects looked rosy for the Regents to continue the successes of the 1944 and 1945 elevens. The promising nucleus of emblem winners included Bill Piper, Russ Gessler, Harry Gilbert, Al Lackner, Bob johnson, Dick Oscaij, Dave Hanson, Bob Mansfield, and Norm Nordeen. West faced its schedule with high hopes, rated among the conference favorites. I ln the opening game of the season, the Regents lost, 2-0, to Fond du Lac. A week later, Racine Park's fourth quarter rally dropped the Maize and Blue, 12-6, in the Big Eight conference opener for both teams. ln the city series opener with Central, West un- covered a new offensive star in Don Annen and won, 12-7. Heartened by this victory and accompanied by three hundred Regent rooters, the team journeyed to Beloit but succumbed to the blazing speed of the Purple's Bill Demos, 24-13. Next the Ionesmen swamped Ianesville, 41-26, in a Homecoming fray which featured strong offensive play. The team followed up the triumph over the Bluebirds with a 12-0 win over Racine Horlick, which was gained by a two-touchdown fourth quarter Regent rally. 6,700 fans jammed Breese Stevens Field to see the East-West clash, which was to decide the city cham- Ken Paine encourages us at a football pep meeting. Theibattle ended in a 6-6 tie. West's tying score came on a sensational pass-lateral play, Gessler to Bleckwenn to Mansfield. With star fullback Bob Iohnson on the sidelines, the Regents closed their season with a bitterly fought 12-7 loss to Kenosha. Although finishing fifth in the Big Eight, the team was not without its individual stars. Guard Bill Piper was named to the all-state squad. Bob Iohnson, Harry Gilbert, and Piper were chosen for the Shrine all-city team. In the final analysis, although the 1946 West grid- ders were handicapped by injuries and bad breaks, they still managed to end the season with a record of three wins, four losses, and one tie, and a tie for the city series crown. l 15 Manager Ilerh Hen- ning is giving the squad a pep talk before a game. Through Th, Hoop When Coach Iones looked over basketball prospects last fall, the future was not bright. There were only two reserves left from the '45 state titlists, Iohn Berger and lim Zimmerman. Since other schools were far better off, the Reg-ents' two-year domination of Big Eight basketball seemed destined to end. lt did end, but not without a swan song. To open the season, the team surprised by defeating Wizconsin Rapids, 41-39, as Iohn Berger scored l9 points. The Rapids team later went to the state semi- linals. The middle ol the season brought double victories :ver both Beloit and Horlick. Also, the inability of the Regents to hold a lead was shown by losses to Fast, 40-39, and Central, 4l-39. In both games, West had a go-otl lead but couldnt hold it. The season came to a grand climax on Feb. 22 when Ianesville bit the dust, 45-43, despite a desperate last minute rally. This Regent eruption before fifty re- tained service lettermen and 1,500 fans forced lanes- ville to talie a tie for the Big Eight crown with Racine Park. 'lhe regional at Stoughton opened with an easy 49-33 Regent victory over Stoughton. The next game was the greatest triumph of the Regent season. Among these were nine returning lettermen: Bill Piper, Bob Coyier, Gil Co- luccy, Glenn VVeeks, Ted Bleckwenn, Beckley Roberts, Malcolm Mossman, Al Lackner, and state quarter- mile champ, Bob Mansfield. After working out for six weeks, the team journeyed to the Wisconsin Rapids indoor meet. The Regents took this meet by a wide margin, showing strength and balance in all departments. Sixteen of the nine- teen Westians shared in the scoring. New prospects showing promise at this meet included Walker Reid, Ralph Lee, Don Iones, Iim Iardine, lack Walker, Wayne Hierlmeier, Herb Henning, Charles Sorenson, and Harry Stuhldreher. Tom Ripp, ace junior high half-miler, reported late after recovering from an operation. On April 20, Natalie Biart reigned as queen over the West Relays. Her court consisted of Sally Shehan and lane Lewis. On April 23, the team went to Free- port for a triangular meet with Beloit and Freeport. On May 4, the Regents participated in the Rockford Relays. Then, on May 11, they traveled to Kenosha for the Big Eight meet. Those Westians who placed third or better in the sectional meet on May 18 competed in the state meet at Madison on May 25. The season was concluded with the city meet at Breese Stevens Field on the night of Wednesday, May 29. Top picture: Returning lettermen of the track team: back row, A. Lackncr, B. Roberts, B. Last fall wit- nessed the most successful season the Four Lakes league has had since it started. West entered three teams, the Dodgers, the X's, and the Bears. Other entries included the Wisconsin High and Central B- teams and three teams from East. For West, the teams were set up according to class. Reserve sophomores played on the Bears, juniors on the X's, and seniors on the renowned Dodgers. Players on the Regent traveling squad found work as coaches for the Four Lakes teams. For example, Dave Hanson and Iohn Kuenning worked with the Dodgers, Les Paul with the X's, and Bill Piper with the Bears. These boys always had ample assistance from other first squad members. During the season, the Dodgers performed very well, and both the Bears and the X's gave great promise of future strength. The Dodgers held first place until their final game, when a 6-0 hard-luck loss to the East Eagles forced them to take second place, half a game back. In games involving two West repre- sentatives, the Dodgers beat the X's, 20-0, and the Bears, 26-0. The X's won a hard-fought game with the Bears by the score of 20-13. The Four Lakes season gave many boys a chance to play football and revealed many Fine prospects for the coming years. BEARS DODGERS X'S l WEST Hlon scHooL - Team -- Four Lakes League More than a first team represented West on the basketball floor last winter. First among other cage teams we must mention the Regent li-team. This squad played preliminary games before each regular appearance of the Maize and Blue first team. Maize and Blue Spring Sports The Maize and Blue volleyball team started the spring program successfully when it won West's own invitational volleyball meet. Schools entered were Lodi, Lake Mills, Portage, Edgerton, Lake Geneva, Stough- ton, Central, East, and West. The Regents knocked Central into the consolation bracket 6-l'5, 15-4, 15-2. Then in the linals West again beat the Downtowners 15-7, I5-Ill, to Win the meet. Tennis prospects were good, with lettermen War- ren Lucas and George Peterson leading a fine group of prospects. Also returning as veterans were Bob Felch, Dick Schubert, and the fine doubles team of lack Olds and Doug Stegner. The Regents were slated to defend their city championship in a heavy schedule of Madison dual meets and the city meet on May 22, 23, and 24. West also defended its Big Eight net title at Kenosha on May ll. The state meet was set for Iune l. The golf team was well set to repeat as city champ and better its 1945 third place in Big Eight standings. Returning lettermen were Doug Nordby, Roy Gustav- son, Bob Shehan, and Iohn Gonce. Others expected to bolster the team included Erv Graf, Dan Oliver, Tom Mould, Bill Hilsenhoff, Roy Baechler, and Dick Meier. The schedule included two dual meets apiece with East, Central, and Wisconsin High. The Big Eight meet was held on May 18 at Beloit, and the state tournament was set for Iune 1, with the team hoping to win the championship. WEST HIGH SCHOOL Girls' Sports Bumps and bruises were the order of the day when speedball was introduced this year as the new fall sport. Miss Lillian Logemann, the advisor, who came to West this year from Racine, did a grand job in making the sport a big success. The championship team was led to victory by Dorothy Milbrandt, the team's captain. The volleyball tournament, headed by Na- dine Schuster, consisted of nine teams se- lected on a class basis. The winners were captained by Pauline Peck. Many ol' these girls took part in the volleyball play day held annually at West, with Ianesville, East, Cen- tral, and VVest participating. The day ended in a tie for Hrst between East and West. The Amazons, Ann Werneris eleventh grade team, was victorious in the hotly con- tested basketball tournament. Credit goes to Sally Shehan for the successful management of the games during Miss Logemamfs ab- sence. .f Bowling competition ended in early spring, with tennis, ping pong, and softball follow- ing later. A flute quartet led by Bailvira Hampton played for the ciub. At one meeting, which was particularly original, a German band, csnisting of six instruments, played well known German folk songs. A recent interesting program included srlcctions from Beethoven and Bach, a group of modern songs, and music by a drum trio led by Peggy Mohr. The Club elected new officers for the second semester. The pictures on this page represent leadership at Westg the class ofhcers are the ones we have elected to make our last year a permanent page in our mem- ory books. A widely publicized campaign and pro- gram resulted in Prexy Don Iones' being the people's choice for our Big-Wig-in-Chief. He and his equal- ly capable fellow Big-Wigs, Iohn Berger and Sally Shehan, have given us much more than their inimita- bly witty repartee: they've given us a sendoll from our good years at West that makes leaving a little easier: weve packed such never-to-be-forgotten fun into our last year. Thi: other leadership shown here is that of Wesl's len tzzp brain-children. We're proud of the good rec- ords they have established for themselves, and we congratulate them on their perseverance. You've done a swell iob, fellows and gals, and we hope you'll always be just as successful. V 'I'lil-1 BRAIN 'I'lillS'l': Walt:-r a - . :rw-1-n Culver. We are saying good-hye to the lille we have lived lhus liar and are pushing oll' to fresh lields. As we sit in tht- auditorium on that last day, things al- ieady seem strange to us. Our friends look ditferent. We take a new look at them. We have known them lor years, hut suddenly we wonder how the coming years will allect these friendships. We are liaeing the luture and are touched with awe. The Maud, long familiar. has taken on new contours. Some of us have known it for as long as six years, hut will never again see it in the same way. We may come hack to our szehool some day, hut it will be different then. We are leaving the security and the fun ol the known and lacing the uncertainties and challenge of the unknown.
