We speak not of those things which are expected to happen at West at any school-those things which provide the reader with a superficial idealistic impression, but rather those that we remember only by looking deep within ourselves. What you will see and read in this book is what really ha ppened, what we really remember, what really will shape our memory of West. This IS West-as it is . .. This is how it was in the language de- partment at West. Any student could learn the fundamentals of German, Spanish, or French. A student might also learn Latin, which is the basis for almost all languages. At West the foundations of many languages could help lead students toward the goal of making this a better world. Even though the radio is tuned out. language labs can still be interesting. l9 Mrs, Roush Miss White Washington, Adams, Jefferson, recited another student in American History. Since everyone who graduated from West would automatically have a social studies minor, these subjects were very well known parts of the life at West. Stu- dents learned in Economics how and why to uti- lize scarce resources. Psychology helped stu- dents obtain a better understanding of their problems in guiding their lives and fulfilling their potentialities as individuals. J , k, L Mrs. Roberts The world involving protractors, slide rules, and compasses usually posed a big threat to be- ginning students in mathematics. Analyzing and solving everyday geometry problems taught logic and reasoning which would be useful for a lifetime. Well, I flunked another one, was a familiar sigh for students as they came out of their classes. lVlost students, however, finally under- stood Iogarithms and square roots and contin- ued to another troubling year in senior math. Actually, for most students, the math depart- ment was not quite so difficult, and they learned a great deal of the ever changing world of num- bers. 24 Marty Warwick evidently went through the fifth grade Boy, l'd hate to carry that around all day! lVlrs. The driver education student's first experience kept nerves taut, but as he cruised down the road, he noticed people looking at the sign on the side of the car that read Driving Students . Luckily most of the other drivers were aware that the sign meant approaching danger. When a student had completed the course he was ready to cope with the hazards on today's highways. 25 Mr. Dowling fi wi Bill Seatz and Sherburne Smith find adding machines better than their fingers , , . sometimes. Most students left school each day at 12:30 to go to their training stations after having taken their required subjects in the morning. D.E. was indeed a lifesaver to those who want experi- ence in job training or who do not plan to attend college. 27 Mechanical Abilities Are Developed Zzzzzl The familiar sound of skill saws was heard from vvoodshop. The boys learned to make blocks of wood into chairs, desks, or tables. Their skilled hands were trained to create new objects with the precision of professionals. The boys could always take pride in the near perfec- tion of their work, and could use their skills working around the home. lVlr. Smith ll R Useful items take shape in woodshop. A good eye and a steady hand are necessary in drafting. 28 Art Exhibits Creativity Self-expression Mrs. Turley Art, in a sense, is a kind of magic: and the artist is the magician. He gives simple materials, such as paint and clay, dimension and meaning. Art students could develop an exciting hobby, or perhaps a career. Many times during the school year the art students made the halls at West more attractive with their original displays. 29 Chorus and Band Balance Academic Work NlrS.WiIhite Mr. Smith Spirit is always raised when the band plays Dixie, At one time or another during the year all of us came in contact with a part of the music de- partment. Either the band, mixed chorus, girls chorus or some special activity of this type caught our interest and involved us in the mu- sical world. Rebels Finish Football Season The Rebels started their early season prac- tice in the middle of August and worked long and hard till mid-November. Under the leadership of Coaches Marvin Mitchell, Wal- ter Ganz, J. A. Beeler, and Hobert Shelton the footballers developed outstanding sportsmanship and team spirit. Their season record of 1-6-1 was far from excellent, but the young squad, containing only seven seniors, gained valuable game experience and showed great promise for the future. The Rebels played their best game against favored South. Their stonewall defense and charging offense displayed remarkable im- provement over past games and showed the effects of strong team spirit. West's victory over Catholic gave the Rebs fourth place in the A Division. Individual honors went to Chuck Ramsey and Dwaine Evans, who made the first team of the All A Division squad. Ramsey was also named to the third string ofthe All K.l.L. team. KNEELING: Coaches Shelton and Beeler. STANDING: Head Coach Mitchell, Captain Butch Messer, and Coach Ganz.
