She illustrates the post, transporting our attention far away to a realm of vivid dreams, that teach us that the meaning of great literature is the significance of great ideas. By causing the past to be less remote, she causes the present to be less obscure, And if we envision the Three Weird Sisters some dingy evening, we can say, Here are the witches l read about in Macbeth. But we know who taught us the why's and therefore's and who fathomed those unruly phantoms. interest is her direction and our ambush. As she read Burns one day this year, we bee came entangled in the marching words and enchanted by the witty meaning. When she reads, her audience hears a vision. Her own wit is wonderful. How is it possible to thank a teacher, who has merged grammar, friendship, English, Literature, and rewarding insight into one course? May this, the i963 Westerner, be merely a token of our gratitude to you, Mrs. Hooper, for your time, your patience, your work, and your great precision. 5 Q fm, , ,4 33' 2 ill S-ul An for wesf High stand up and hauled V Y A A 22 Q ff Which cheerleader doesn'l know the cheer? 'I' Mrs. Hina guides Andy Holt back to Australia. The guidance program at West is improving year by year. More materials have been made available espe- cially to those students who plan to attend colleges or universities. Also, more tests are being given to help students make other vital decisions pertaining to their futures. The main asset to the guidance department though, is Mrs. Naomi Hina, our competent guidance counselor. She is well trained in her field and is always willing to give counselling to those who desire it. This winter Mrs. Hina was called upon in the absence af Mrs. Wray to carry out the secretarial duties. f., - n. a, vnu a 15? Led by Betty Gail Cooper and Jerelyn Lee the cheerleaders prac- ticed twice a week in the summer to prepare for the coming season. The main praiect was raising money to pay for pom- poms bought in the summer at cheerleading camp. They sold minature yarn pom-poms and easily raised the necessary money. Lackey, Danny Reed, Tommy Poison, Jerry Henry, Charlie De- The 1962 Rebel footballers were coached by Marvin Mitchell, head coach and bockfield coach, Robert Smith, line coach, and Dennis Webb, B-team coach. These three rrten provided the go behind what success the Rebel's had this post season. Due mainly to a lack of boys with whom to work, the coaches were only able to claim 3 victories for the team. Even though the overall record of the team was 3 wins and 7 losses, the season was quite profitable in other ways. The squad, consisting of 36 players from ninth through twelfth grades, had fun playing the games and even toiling through the practices most of the time. The younger bays also gained invaluable experience as they were called to fill in the vacancies that occurred when other players were iniured, Through the season all the players grew in maturity and ability until the end of the season when the Rebels were noted for their sports- manship. The coaching staff continually drilled the boys in the basic fundamentals. Blocking, tackling, and the success- ful running of offensive and defensive maneuvers were stressed in every practice. The coaches altered the wing-T attack successfully to the extent that the Rebels' offense was a tough one for every opponent to halt. The captain Johnny McKinnon and co-captains Wayne Young and Wayne Maior lead the team well. Their spirit was always good as the team went into each game. Much credit should be paid to these three seniors not only for their leadership but also for their efforts to win on the football field. The other four seniors showed this desire to win and strove with all their might to reach their goal of winning. Special credit should be paid Wayne Young who was selected by the coaching staff as Most Valuable Playr er. He stood out on defense making many excellent tackles and also on offense. He completed 52 of 118 passing attempts giving him a total offense yardage of i002 yards. Also selected by the staFf for Most Im- proved Ployer was Jim Rike, Best Blocker, Wayne Maior, and Best Defensive Player Jae Rutherford. These boys have worked hard to make the '62 Rebel team a success. Another Rebel honoree is Ernest Biggs who made the first string All-City squad. ,4 wa ri W y , . .' STANDING: Rodney Nelson, Mike Irwin manager Dems Galagher Flash Powers, Albert Johnson, Russ Williams, Barry HutTsvevler 1962 BASKETBALL TEAM The Rebel basketballers provided much excitee ment for their fans and coaches this past season. There were many heart-breaking varsity games last by 2 points ar less. Yet the squad kept its Rebel spirit. Talent was available in each man, but overall height ruined the roundballers chances against many foes. Untimely injuries also hurt the team especially in the loss ot Captain Greg Blankenship, one of the most consistently good Rebel roundballers. Coach Walter Ganz worked with his boys long and hard. lt was an amazing iob done in prepa- ration for each game. Coach Ganz had two good leaders in Captain Greg Blankenship and Ca- captain Wayne Young. Johnny McKinnon and Wayne Young held the guard posts well as did Frank Powers, Mike Causseaux, and Greg Blank- enship perform exceptionally well at their forward positions. Much strength was added to the team by the bench-warmers who were always ready to take up the slack and win. Captain Greg Blankenship West played a tremendous game against South at West, Fate was the only thing which kept the Rebels from beating the state's number I ranked high school club. Jay Cole, the state's scoring leader, made a bas- ket with four seconds remaining in the game to beat West 35-33. Cole lead South in scoring while Captain Greg Blankenship led West in rebounding and scoring with 16 paints. The strategy used by Coach Ganz al- most broke South's back, The freeze and control- play from the opening tip was executed wonderfully by the Rebels and succeeded in keeping the ball away from South. Very few mistakes in ball handling were made as West capitalized on every break of the game. There was iust no way to stop the final shot which killed the Rebels. Co-captain Wayne Young ii Frank Powers Revenge for the loss to Bearden in football was gained by the Rebels on their home court. West shot better than the Bearden basketballers and also cleared more rebounds than the tall opposing team. Wayne Young led the Rebel attack with I8 points and also stole the basketball from Bearden players numerous times. Russ Williams collected 16 rebounds while Greg Blankenship got another 8 rebounds and added 13 points to the Rebel cause. Wayne Tipton, a leading scorer in the Knoxville lnterscholastic League, gave much assistance to the losers but the game ended in 52-46 victory for West. Johnny McKinnon 96 Mike Causseaux The Rebels lost another exciting game at home to Powell by a score of 52-50. Again it was a shot by the opposing team's best player which beat West. The Rebels had been playing a poor game up until the last quarter when they surged ahead to tie Powell in the regular game time. West held on to the ball in the 3 minute overtime waiting for a final shot to break the tie and give them a victory. West missed, leaving just enough time for PoweII's Cannon to hit a desperation shot from the head ot the foul lane iust as the horn sounded. The scoring for West was led by three boys Frank Powers, Greg Blankenship, and Russ Williams who had lb, 13, and IO points respectively. Mackey wiiiim 'Q Z 1 1 Q OW ks 146 X xi V 'G' V 5 . Besides iuniors and sophomores, much new talent was found in a few of the new freshman class. Coach Jollay hopes to instill in these young freshman boys the Rebel spirit cmd Coach Gonz's style of play. The B-team was led consistently by lnlcy Young, Nick Romsey, Suthie Powers, and Jim Rutherford. These boys played o big port in the many victories of the B-team. X... The crowds thoroughly enioyed their exciting close games which they usually won. Coach Ganz hopes that these boys, along with the faur who played on the varsity club, con win mony games next year. He also wishes more fans would come to see these boys, the future Rebel vorsity men. He thinks this will better prepare them for their coming iob. TRACK West's athletic Department is becoming larger and more etticient in providing excitement for fans, fame for the school, and recreation for more boys, More sports are being oftered with better coaching and equipment. This is especially evident in the truck and Held oreos. Coach Walter Ganz is con- sistently striving to develop the potential of those boys who desire to compete with other schools in speed, brain, and intestinal fortitude, copies.. wayne Maier and couch Walter cm. 9 Y Ruvherlard, Moior, Merritt, and Young take their marks. Wayne Major and Mike Causseaux have been elected as captain and co-captain respectively. Maior is a speedy sprinter while Causseaux is a solid distance run- ner. These two seniors along with seniors Jack Whiteman, Wayne Young, Larry Merritt, and Johnny Orr provide the experience in running. Whiteman and Orr are important in the field events, Coach Ganz expects his boys to be in top condition. He has extensive knowledge about how to prepare his boys. One of his best examples was Claude Romer who set a new school record last year by running the 100 yard dash in 10,0 seconds. The team itself has much talent to be used on the diamond, Finally, Coach Smith is securing better baseball equipment which is constantly needed by the deserv- ing team. Veteran first baseman Greg Blankenship was chosen captain for the team. He has been a good leader and player in previous seasons. He will be assisted by Mickey Wil- liams who is co-captain. Another important veteran is Rodney Nelson who has been catching for many years and will give the needed experience behind the plate to the team. The bulk of the team consists of iuniors. Many of these boys played a large part of the last season and are expected to come through to seize many victories this year for West. Captain Greg Blankenship. She is chosen for her outstanding dependability, service, patriotism, and leadership. But aside from these essential qualities, Jerelyn possesses the special warm personality which makes her a friend to all she meets. 114 BOYS' AND GIRLS' STATE Ward Seymour and Betty Gail Cooper were chosen by the faculty to represent West High at Boys' and Girls' State. These conventions, held in June, teach the delegates about city, county, and state govern- ment and, in addition, provide various forms of recreation and entertainment. The girls meet in Murfreesboro and the boys at Lebanon. They both made new friends and consider attending Boys' and Girls' State on experience they will never forget. Doug Little and Barbara Foster were chosen as al- ternate delegates, AMERICAN FIELD SERVICE Andy Holt was fortunate enough to be chosen as an exchange student to Sydney, Australia. Andy lived in Australia for eight months with the R. J. Delaney family. He attended Sydney Boys' High School and says he led a fairly normal Australian life, except for speaking to boys' and girls' schools. West was very proud to have Andy selected for this experience which he will long re- member. Erik Gerretsen, coming from Amsterdam, Holland, is the exchange student at West this year. Although Erik tells us that his school is very different from ours, through his adaptability and friendly personality, he won the friendship of all West High. West feels very fortunate in having Erik, and for enlarging its understanding of in- ternational friendship. 115 ' r. p ,, gy' 7 'lim - 3 li, 'iQ'!Zf,:i5' of 'L .
