Montgomery, our advisor Above: Scott Trimble, assistant editor looks on as Editor-in-Chief Anne Foster explains the details of the i960 WESTERNER. The WESTERNER We, the producers of the l959-'60 WESTERNER have strived to present a smash hit to you-our critical audience. At our summer retreat we began to compile our ideas, re- hearsal after rehearsal. As the performer feels who finally makes it, we producers hope own opinionl. Without our indispensible ad- vertising staff, we would have set a precedent-the first class at West not to record the history in a yearbook. Without the quiet understand- ing of Mr. Montgomery, our loyal advisor, the advice of our that your annual will have a long run of memories for you, and that you will be sending your rave notices too. Our Shakespearean art de- picting life as we see it, is on the light side leveryone to his talented printer, Mr. Walter, and the unending patience of Mr. Leslie, our photographer, we producers would be working off Broadway, so to speak. To put it bluntly, there would have been no annual. i uv .. W ew. eg? West 0-Fulton 32 Fulton High's Falcons capitalized on early Rebel mistakes to take an early lead and finally win the game by a score of 32-O. On West's first series of plays they were unable to move the ball. The snap from center was long on fourth down and the ball rolled dead on the Rebel four. Two plays later Fulton scored. Later in the quarter Fulton scored again on a fifty-one yard run. West was able to stop the Falcons in the second quarter by playing fine defense. Bill Hecht led the West defenders. Fulton added three more touchdowns be- fore the end of the game. Don McCown was West's big offensive thrust. He carried the ball fifteen times. West 6-South 0 West, still seeking their first victory, bat- tled with South and finally slaughtered the Rockets by a score of 6-O. Rebel defensive play was the outstanding factor in this AA clash. George Conner intercepted a Rocket pass and raced to the South sixteen. Three plays later Don NlcCown skirted end for the first and last score of the ball game. The remaining three quarters were hard fought with neither squad being able to score again. This game was strictly a de- fensive battle with neither team scoring in the first half. West dominated the first half with several offensive drives. Rule sprinted to the Rebel one and forced West to kick. Rule returned the ball to the nineteen yard line and two plays later a fif- teen-yard pass play produced the only score of the game. The point after was no good. West was never able to start another drive and the final score was Rule 6-West O. West 0-Karns I4 West met Karns on a muddy turf and was unable to stop the Beaver attack, Karns scored once in the first half and again in the second half to win the game I4-O. West was deep in Karns territory due to Beaver bobbles, but they were stopped by a tough defense. Again in the fourth quarter the Beavers capitalized on a blocked punt and scored their second touchdown on a twenty-yard pass play. West's only threat came on a forty-eight yard drive to the Karns twelve yard line. How- ever, Karns recovered a West fumble and raced sixty-three yards to the West 20. West held on the three but Don McCown was tackled in the end zone for a safety. West I3-East I4 A fourth quarter rally fell short as the Rebels dropped a close one to the East High Mountaineers. Both teams were winless at this point in the season so this was a very hard- fought game. East was able to score fourteen points in Below: Ben Harms. Above: Bill Hecht. The Tirst quarter, as The Rebels tried a new starting lineup. The remaining part ot the half was fought on even scale. West finally got their offense moving and they scored two touchdowns in The Tinal quar- ter. Sparked by a twenty-three yard run To The East Three by Captain Lewis Foster, The Rebels scored Their first Touchdown. Bill Hecht's point after Try was wide. West scored again late in The game when East gambled deep in Their own territory. West was improv- ing steadily but were unable to win the heart- breaker to East. On the second play from scrimmage Collins went six yards for the first score or The game. Harriman was able To add two more touchdowns in The first period. The Blue Devils added one each in the second and third quarter for their Thirty-two points. The most exciting point in The game Tor the West fans came with ten minutes left in the game. Harriman was Threatening to score again, but George Conner snaged a pass on the West seven and raced ninety-seven yards for a Rebel score. The ball changed hands many times in the remaining minutes. The game ended 32-6. Below: Johnny Comer, West, Ttackles a Bearden player. West 8-Jefferson City 'l2 The West High eleven opened the '59 season against the more experienced Jefferson City squad. Jefferson City opened up the game with two guick touchdowns before the Rebels could get started. As the second half started, West seemed to have gotten over first game iitters, Eddie Collins, playing alert ball, recovered a fumble on the Rebel fifteen, and behind superb block- ing raced eighty-five yards for the first West tally. West scored two more points in the fourth quarter to make the final score i2-8 Jefferson City. Below: Claxton Mayo. West 0-Bearden 'I4 In the second game, West came along and played much better ball against Bearden. The spirited Rebels fought hard with the Bearden Bulldogs through the first half, but had trouble stopping the Bulldog's charging half- back, Fred Cope, in the second half. Don McCown brought the Rebels to life in the first quarter by swinging end for a 65-yard touchdown. The play was called back, however, because of a clipping penalty. West was never able to get within scoring range. After three successive penalties, the Rebels' high spirit was broken. Even though West finally lost 14-O the young boys were begin- ning to show improvement. 104 Below: Boys await their tur Above: Don McCown carries the ball for West. West 0-You ng 45 West was highly outclassed by a power- ful Young High team. The Rebels were still having trouble molding together a strong de- fense as the Yellowiackets romped to a 45-O victory. Young having one of the fastest and most powerful backs in the state, Ronnie Brewer, was unstoppable up the middle. Young opened the game fast. Scoring two touchdowns within three minutes the Rebels were never again in the game. Four more times during the ball game the Yellowiackets were able to cross the double stripe. West 0-Central 20 In the fourth game of the year West was still looking for its first victory. Playing a fine first half, the Rebels looked as if they might pull a big upset over Central. The Bob- cats were fired up the second half and scored one touchdown in the third quarter and added two more in the fourth to win 20-O. The Rebels got what looked like a break in the second quarter, but were never able to get their offense to click. Gary Myers crashed through the Central line to block a punt on the Bobcat twenty-five. The Rebel rally was stopped cold on the twenty-five after four plays. West was pressed all during the third period and the Bobcats finally blocked Eddie Collins' punt and scored.
