L ft E yb dy f t fi 1 1 k Bl O qq WE HONOR A FRIEND His friendliness, coupled with a real con- cern for the welfare of each student, makes hirn loved by a11 of us as a whole. Thats Coach Bill Wright, the one chosen by the 1959 WESTERNER staff for the dedication this year. The reasons Coach Bill Wright was se- lected, other than because of his big blue eyes, his statuesque build, and an all girl staff, are based on the respect the student body holds for him. As West's first guidance counselor, and especially as senior class ad- visor, he has given rnuch needed assistance to all students, and the courage he has shown in trying to advise the seniors is re- rnarkable. All Madness aside, We as students will always be grateful to Mr. Wright, for, in his acceptance of varied school responsibilities, he has guided us unselfishly through our high school years. ,, VV. v, f 515511 54 ' 1 J X A IM, V Q- ft? , ,iv . v 5 , 'P , -. He is always willing to give the students advice on their ideas, practical or fantastic, as the case may be. At any time cf the day, we may enter his office and have a delightful chat with him and leave with added information. Mr, Love is always delighted to change students' schedules even when they come back a second cr third time, but for those who come back a fourth time .... Mr. Love is an extremely busy man. Among his many duties as principal are keeping the cure ricula scholastically on top, transacting much school business, keeping a friendly relationship between faculty and students, and attending all school ac- tivities. fi 9,1 Mrs. Wray One of our rnost fascinating person- alities at West High is Mrs. Wray, our secretary. Although she keeps an ef- ficient office, there is always time to listen to sniveling students gripe about nothing in general or to encourage any one of us who is veering to the left. Actually, Mrs. Wray has a real con- cern for every student, tdon't think she doesn't have reason tol and we are grateful for her understanding and pa- tience with us. A cheerful countenance has rnade her indispensible at West and by her unselfish service she has inspired us tis it possible?D greatly. Senior Class Officers The officers of the 1959 graduating class were elected last fall by a vote of the Senior Class. One of their first responsibilities was to select tentative types of graduation announcements, which were sub- mitted to the group for a final vote. Later in the year, the officers were in charge of numerous other activities, such as raising money for the seniors' gift to the school, organizing the Senior Banquet and dance, and planning where to put the time bomb graduation night. All in all, thanks are due to this elite group for helping to make our senior year a big ink blob on West High's record. 26 X A a gr 7' gr: Below: Salem Stair perfermed her :ie anfl nly fiuty as seirrary cf the Seniir Class by snowing swmples of gradu- ation announcements. , ,J 5 'Q A., 1 Left: Irmmy is qivmq john :lirectiwns as 1 where l.e sh ulfl pfzse tnft trophy as Keller stands Cidlyt by. The Rebel gridmen ended the season with a very good record this year, considering Richard Stair was the captain. They had a record of seven Wins, two losses, one tie and six torfeits. The Rebels topped oft this brilliant season with a bid to play in the Little Smoky Bowl in Sevierville. This was won after a hard fight by a score ot 7-O. Several outstanding individuals came out ot this tearn. Iohn Dyer, Parvin Ledford, Mickey Snyder and Al Neuman were chosen on the All-City team. Below: Mickey Snyder, Ierry Snyder. ff, Hog., West 21-Ieiierson City 0 West's i958 season got off to a dull start as Zander Ayres went 90 yards with the opening kickoff against lefferson City for the touchdown. Despite this handicap, how- ever, the Rebels made a comeback to finally win a Zl-O victory. The game was played September 6 on the opponent's field. West 18-Fulton 0 The Rebel gridmen rolled up an 18-O vic- tory over the Filthy Fulton Falcons for the second straight this season. This victory cost the Rebels the services of standout halfback Zander Ayres who was lost for the season. All three of West's tallies came in the second period as West's offense exploded. Iohn Dyer climaxed a 57-yard drive early in this period by ramming over from the six. Mo- ments later, junior quarterback ferry Snyder connected with lack Horner for the second touchdown. Late in the second quarter West tallied again with a pass from Snyder to Ayres. West 13-Young 32 West-gridmen fought the Young High Yellow lackets toe-to-toe, until in the last seconds, the Yellow Iackets nipped them 32 to l3. The powerful Young offense exploded in the face of the West Rebels on September l9, as Coach Norman Messerolls gridmen Went down to their first defeat of the season. The game was played at Duff Field. Despite the defeat, West had its stand- outs. ferry Snyder played an inspired game, carrying the ball 5 times, and excelling on defense. West 6-Central 6 Refending themselves after a bad de- feat at the hands of Young, West knocked heads with Central September 27, at Pruden Field, and the result was a 6-6 tie. The score is a perfect indication of the closeness with which the two East Tennessee powers battled. The Rebels only touchdown came when Central was held for down on their own 24-yard line. After a l5-yard penalty, Ierry Snyder engineered a 34-yard touch- Eddie Cate, Parvin Ledfcrd. down drive, capped when Mickey Snyder crashed across for the score. West elected to try from placement, and it couldn't have been more dramatic as Bill l-lecht's kick hit the crossbar and bounced back. Central's Richard Bridges raced 76 yards for their only touchdown, and at the 'finish of the game the score stood at 6-6. West 32-East 0 Making their homecoming a complete 108 success, West's gridmen trounced arch rival East 32-O at a rainsoaked Evans-Collins Field on October 3. The 32 points earned by the Rebels set a new school record for points produced. The teams battled on fairly even terms in the first half as it looked like the rain was going to prohibit any flashy performances. After the intermission West completely dis- regarded the wet conditions and marched through the East defenses for four touch- downs. lerry Snyder mixed the passes and running plays effectively and the Mountain- eers were completely baffled. Harriman 34--West 7 Suffering their second defeat of the sea- son, the West High Rebels fell as Harriman squeaked by with a score of 34-7, on October ll at Harriman. Harriman took over early and was never threatened by the outmanned Rebels. The Blue Devils cracked the West defense for two touchdowns in the first period, one in the second quarter, and two in the final. West's only offensive spark of the night came in the third quarter when Mickey Snyder made a spectacular 87-yard punt return. But it was to no avail as the Rebels were already down three touchdowns and First row: Frank Pearce, Banks Roden. West 6-Bearden 0 It took a valiant goal line stand, in the closing minutes to preserve a 6-U lead and to give the West High Rebels a hard fought victory over Bearden. The game was played October 17 on the Bulldogs field. The only score of the game came after an 80 yard march by the Rebels. The running of Dick Sterchi was very effective on this drive as he made several timely gains. The rest of the game was played on uf fairly even terms although West had a little trouble solving a tricky formation which Bearden employed in the second half. West 7-South 0 Although they dominated the game West's forces could manage only one score, but that was enought to defeat the South High Rockets in an important city battle. The game was played October 23 at Evans-Collins Field. This victory moved West one step closer to the city title. Ierry and Mickey Snyder along with halfback Iohn Dyer provided the drive needed to give West its seven points. 'uosuxsyq ptztcc Aq petlddns ssrzsncig, West 7-Sevierville 0 Aided by four intercepted passes, West's City Champions became the first team in ten years to defeat Sevierville in the Thanks- giving Day Smoky Mountain Bowl. The Rebels turned the tide 7-U to finish the '58 campaign with an 8-2-l record. What proved to be the game's only score came midway in the second period. Dick Sterchi fielded a punt on Sevierville's 40 and returned it to the 34. With Mickey Snyder and Sterchi doing most of the damage. West scored nine plays later, on Sterchi's four yard sweep. West's Defensive De- mons held Sevierville scoreless, and the game ended 7-U. West 24-Rule 0 Leaving no doubt as to who is the best team in the city, the West High Rebels made it two in a row in the title game November 7 with a smashing 24-0 victory over the Rule High Bears. Although this was the last regu- lar season game, West has accepted an in- vitation to play arch rival Sevierville in the annual Smoky Mountain Bowl at Sevierville, Thanksgiving Day. Led by Ierry Snyder, who was acclaimed Back-of-the-Week for his performance against Rule, West played one of their best games both offensively and defensively. Y s, Vt l fo 'S' i if lt x . Several of the boys on the team gained individual honors in the All-City team poll. Iuniors Dickie Gehron and Bill Thomas were chosen on the team, and captain Lawrence House and Bill Thomas were chosen on the Sixth District All-Tourna- ment Team. But then the Westsiders bounced back with 3 consecutive wins over Rule, 1957's Dis- trict Champs, Karns and Fulton. This streak was broken by another 8-10 loss, this time to Young. ns, Bill Wright, Baseball Coach Once more, however, the Rebels came back and won 5 straight regular season games to capture the League title. Going into the District Tournament, the top-seeded Rebels lengthened their winning streak to 6 games. Then the highly regarded West team dropped the final two games, being upset by Fulton and Young. This 1958 team showed much improvement over past baseball teams here at West, thanks to the hard work of Coach Bill Wright. The three pitchers led the team to an over-all record of 12 wins and 4 losses. Captain Wayne Cruze compiled a 3-2 rec- ord, while Delaney and McCarter each won 3 and lost 1. Rookie Tommy Hale lead all hitters with a .500 batting mark and was a member ot the All- City team. Following with .300-plus batting averages were Snyder, House and Horner. Along with Hale, Rebel's Snyder, Dyer, Cruze, and Sterchi made the All-City baseball team. The 1959 outlook is bright also, as the Rebels have 9 returning lettermen. They are seniors lim McCarter, Iim Goolsby, lack Horner, Tom Hale, Lawrence House and Dick Sterchi. Returning juniors are Gary Myers, Walter Moore and Richard Gilli- land. The Homecoming game, West vs. East, was played on a field slightly damp from intermittent showers. At half time the nine lovelies swam to the center of the field to be presented to the student body.
