Meme bers ot the statt attended the Tennessee High School Press Association Convention where problems ot year book publication were dis- cussed. For whole weeks pictures were being taken constantly, and at this time copy was also being prepared. Finally, on February 25, the Westerner went to press and there was nothing left to do but to wait and see what the product ot almost a year's work looked like in print f and think about who would be best qualified to take over the T955 annual. This is the first year the society has been in existence at West. Early in 1954, plans were in progress to organize the local chapter, and the formal organization dates from February i, when the charter members were initiated. Under the regulations of the society, each spring qualified underclassmen are taken in to form a nucleus for the next year's club. Although the charter members were chosen by Mr. Davis, sponsor of the chapter, on the basis of interest and contribution to dramatic ac- tivities, all additional members will be chosen by a strict point system. One point represents approximately ten hours work, and ten points admits a student to membership. 7 zffff lf, , sy. The second miscue came late in the fourth quarter when Jim Hodge's pass was speared by a Yellow Jacket on the West 40 yard stripe and returned to the Rebel 12 yard marker. Three more plays and then a plunge over the lime marker netted the score at 13-O. Rules 13, West 18 Pulling the biggest upset of the season, West defeated a Rule High Golden Bear eleven 18-13. This game was truly the best game the Rebs played all season, and it made other Knox area teams get up and take notice of the Rebel's potentiality. West started out like a house afire and grabbed three touchdowns before the first half ended. However, this was all the scoring they saw for the remainder of the game. James Hodge, who was de- scribed as the Toast of West Knoxville, was the outstanding gridman on the turf, as he romped for all three West TD's. Helping him on offensive were Tom Tobler, Jim Wildcat McCallum, and Dave Shady Lane. Defensive honors went to the entire Rebel line as they allowed very few Bear runners through for excessive yardage. Maryville 0, West 19 Looking better each game, the West Knoxville boys out-played and out-scored a Maryville Red Rebel bunch 19-0 at E-C field before a meager crowd of 500 loyal spectators. It was West's third win of the season and it was to be their last. The offensive that looked so weak at the beginning of the year pulled itself together and played an excellent game. Jim Hodge, Tom Anderson, Tom Tobler, and Fred Cash carried the mail into scoring position three times. Fulton 14, West 7 Fulton High, capitalizing on two Rebel fumbles, took a 14 to 7 victory at E-C stadium on November 12. It was a hard fought game from the opening gun till the finish, but the Rebels couldn't muster up enough offense to take home a win. Late in the fourth quarter West scored. Bob Davis caught hold of a Falcon fumble on Fulton's 35 yard stripe. A penalty against the Falcons moved the ball to the 2 yard line from where Tom Tobler drove over for the lone score. Gene Overholt added the after touchdown point and the game had seen all its scoring. Bobby Overholt was the main cog for the Rebels, along with Big Joe Elkins and Captain Roy Seals. Tom Tobler, Dave Lane, Tom Anderson, and Fred Cash were offensive stalwarts. Central 26, West 0 Central High's Jimmy Dykes ran like an All- American, scoring three touchdowns and set- ting up another to give the Bobcats a 26-0 win over the Rebels at Pruden Field. Since Central was rated as the state's best team, the defeat did not seem so bad. Roy Seals, Howard Young, Joe Elkins, and Bo Shafer were defensive standouts. Fred Cash, Tom Ander- son, and Jim Hodge captured offensive honors. 100 Senior Gridmen Pnctured are, from from lef V. fn v--.r -4. -., -Q., pk To rn Y Harrell Elkms and Mir.. The team ended the regu- lar playing season with a record of 17 wins and 3 losses. The hoopsters took victories over Catholic 121, Fulton 121, Alcoa 121, South 111, Rule 111, Bearden 111, Young 121, Karns 111, Central 121, Carter 121, East 111. South, Rule, and East High set back the Westerners once during the year. The biggest event of the year was the West- Central game. This was the biggest game of the season for both clubs and in the contest lay the fate of the league championship. The Rebels won the game to the sweet tune of 57-55. The 6th District Tournament didn't prove as successful as the outcome of the league record tor the Rebs were downed in the quarter- finals by a determined Central High group and the West quintet went down fighting, 54-57. The members of the varsity basketball team are, first row sealed, left to right: Albert King 1Captain1, Roy Seals, Charlie Scott, Hank Rose 1Co-Captain1, and Hubbell Qualls. Second row: Doug Gray, David Johnston, Don Preston, and Ji- Si-XV The Rebs had advanced to the quarter-finais by whipping the Rule High Golden Bears in the first round, 60-38. School Spirit One of the reasons for the team's many conquests was the undying team spirit and, above all, the magnificent school support dis- played at every game by hundreds of faithful students. The cheerleaders were whoopin' it up at ever game and leading the already frenzied crowd to wild cries for Victory. The nucleus of the basketeers' achievements was centered around the excellent playing of guards Hubbell Qualls, Capt. Albert King, center Charlie Scott, and forwards Hank Rose and Roy Seals. Holding up the finest bench in the city were Bob Overholt, Howard Monk Young, Doug Gray, Gene Overholt, David Johnston, and Morton Gardner. Howard Young. Much interest was shown by several competent grapplers, so it was decided that some matches with other area schools would be scheduled.
