Stu- dents must be sixteen years of age or older and are carefully selected on the basis of their scholastic record and interests in the aptitudes for a successful future in the business world. ln this nation-wide program of voca- tional education, public schools and busi- ness concerns cooperate in training young men and women for success in a variety of business opportunities. This is accomplished by combining experience on the job with classroom teaching. Gene Overholt recovered a Sullivan fumble and turned in a splendid game at his tackle position. Jim Bowman's vicious tackling was one of West's better defensive weap- ons. The most exciting game of the season was the tangle between the Falcons and the Rebels. West played the game like veterans but some bad breaks proved too much for our team. Outstanding on defense were Gene Colson, Gene Overholt, Jack Lewis, and Roy Seals. Leading the offensive were Gilbert Baldwin and Tommy Tobler. RebeI's loss to Central ends season. The West Rebels lost their last game of the '52 season to Central, 27 0 The Rebels outmanned in almost every respect couldnt get their offense moving long enough to cross the Bobcat s goal Central struck swiftly for a pair of first period touchdowns and added a second period score for a 2l O half time lead The Bob cats put the game entirely out of West s reach in the third quarter with their final score The basketball and football managers are from left to rlglut Dave Creasman and Joe Rainey vAvAVAVA X X .X .x .1 A k'A'4'v 1'5- xx' 1g l- Jil' P A 1 C g 1 j'fg,:s w,3 ' ' v ' V -. REBEL QUINTETTE For the second time in two years the basketball team wound up the season with an even number of wins and losses. This year they finished the season with eleven wins and eleven losses, Almost every game was exciting to watch and the students who supported the team so well had much to do with the season's success. Some of the more exciting games this year were the games with Alcoa, South, Centrol, Eost, and Fulton. Playing the finest game of the year, West won over a highly favored Fulton team on the night of the l3th of February. The Rebels won this game by a score of 67 to 6l. In the District Tourna- ment, the Rebels were beaten by Korns High, 64 to 50. The success of the team wos centered around the fine playing of Captain Bruce Foster, Roy Seals, Hank Rose, Bobby Brown, Albert King, Lynn Westergaard, Robert Martin, Eugene Fair, Fred Brackney, Doug Gray, and Charlie Scott. RESUME OF SEASON The Rebels lost their first two games of the season to Karns and Fulton. Karns took the opener by a score of 53-49 and Fulton took the latter 74-53. After these two losses, West bounced into the win Column by taking their next three games. The Rebels gained two league victories by defeating Rule, 58-50, and dropping Carter 55-39. West edged Catholic, 55-52, in an overtime, to win its third straight game. During the Christmas holidays the Rebels won three out of six very closely fought games. With only seconds remain- ing to play in the Alcoa game, a field Qoal At right is a picture of the East West game showing Roy Seals as he makes a goal for West. gave the Rebels a 62-6l victory. The night following the Alcoa game, West won a thriller over South 4l-39. A foul shot made the difference in the Oak Ridge game which West lost, 53-52. Rule High captured the next game by a score of 67-66. We then lost to Lake City 69-62 and defeated Central in a close one, 56-53. ln the game with Carter a city scoring record was made as the Rebels won easily 95-52. ln the first encounter with Young, West won handily, 62-55. We lost the next two games to East, 67-64, and to Alcoa, 70-64. After edging the South High Rockets, 57-55, the Rebels lost the next three contests. ln league competition we lost to Young, 64- 57, and East, 72-65. ln a non-league game West was downed by Lake City, 65-47, Then the Rebels upset a highly favored Fulton High team 67-6l, to win their first encounter against the Falcons in five starts. The team finished the year winning seventeen out of twenty games and went to the finals in the B tournament. East won the tournament over the West boys 52 to 42, There are many reasons for the team's success. One of these is the winning spirit which the boys had. They never went onto the court without the idea that they would fight their op- ponents all the way in order to win the games. Another reason for their fine record was the excellent coaching by Coach Ganz. This is a team that will long be remem- less playing and great team spirit. At left is a picture of the East-West game as we mode one of our thirty goals. THE B TEAM First row: Don Preston, Hubbel Qualls, Morton Gardner, Ray Brann, Howard Young, Frank Veneable.
