WESTERDAYS 1976 A PUBLICATION OF: WEST SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL EAST AVENUE PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND TABLE OF CONTENTS FACULTY PAGE 12 SENIORS PAGE 36 SPORTS PAGE 94 ACTIVITIES PAGE 126 ADS AND CANDIDS PAGE 144 DEDICATION Russell was blessed with parents who helped fill his days with joy. His suffering was lessened by beautiful memories of yesterdays. His each today was meaningful. His school work showed a zest for excellence. And although he could not play at sports, he loved many. Coach McNaught would list Russell among the best basketball managers he ever had for his team. I'd say Russell was a champion without ever handling the ball. As a faculty member, I would say that perhaps Russell taught us as much as we taught him. Lessons such as courage, caring, and concern for others. We need more young men like Russell and we truly miss him. ' I've seen Fire G I've seen Rain --Mr. Whitehead I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end. I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, But I always thought that I'd see you again. Russell Comire was a walking symbol of courage. In spite of all his handicaps, he was able to lead a happy life, full of achievement. He was put on this earth as a gift to make us realize how well off we really are to be living a happy and healthy life. --Cheryl Lee I am saddened deeply by his passing. He was my friend; a braver, more courageous person I have never met. I miss him. --Lou Pezzi ... a fine young man who possessed courage, pride and desire. Despite living with an awareness of death, he cummunicated enthusiasm and love for life as he shared a zestful approach to academics, a true appreciation for music, and a genuine love for sports. —Jay Ryan It is with great sorrow that we remember the passing of those who were friends of ours. The late Russell Comire, a former classmate, was admired by students and teachers alike because of his courageous lifestyle. Mrs. Whitehead will be deeply missed by all; her dedication to her work was untiring. The passing of Del Mondor, head custodian and friend to everyone, left us all in deep sadness. These few words can barely express the feelings we have for these people. 3 ► It is not I that belong to the past, but the past that belongs to me. America is the youngest of the nations and inherits all that went before in history. And I am the youngest of America's children, and into my hands is given all her priceless heritage, to the last white star espied through the telescope, to the last great thought of the philosopher. Mine is the whole majestic past, and mine is the shining future. -Mary Antin 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 FACULTY PRINCIPAL MATTHEW BOZEK The Class of 1976 would like to express its sincere gratitude to our principal, Mr. Matthew Bozek. For three years, Mr. Bozek has guided us with patience and understanding as we began to assume our responsibilities as adults. As a result of his fine judgement and leadership each of us has grown in some way and leaves West High with a sense of accomplishment. Mr. Bozek has taught us to have pride in ourselves and for this valuable lesson we again say thank-you. The team was received with great enthusiasm, reflected by the increased attendance at the games, even though several were played under adverse weather conditions. The football team lost two heartbreaking games; one to Rogers in the last fifteen seconds, and one to Barrington by one point. Our congratulations go to several players who were selected to positions on the All-Blackstone Valley and All Class A-Small teams, with special distinction to Paul Ferrer who made the first string All-State Defensive Team. % 97 THE DEFENSE 1st Row: Rick Courtemache, Jack Finan, Paul Ferrer, Chris Dicomitis, 2nd Row: Coach Connolly, Jeff Robbins, George Fisher, Steve Demers, Steve Panners, Frank Reddington, Manny Marshall, Rob Stewart, Coach Pastore 98 THE OFFENSE 1st Row: Rick Courtemache, Paul Ferrer, Kevin Gibbons, Willy Townson, Mike Doucette, Angelo Caipethos, Bobby Fields, 2nd Row: Coach Caswell, Jeff Robbins, Pete Corrigan, Steve Panners, Rob Stewart, Chris Dicomitis, Manny Gregorio, Coach Kazarian NORTHERN DIVISION 1975 CROSS COUNTRY In addition to the regular league schedule, the Cross Country team competed in the following Invitational and Championship meets: Pilgrim Invitational, Cross Country Carnival, City Championship, Blackstone Valley Championship, Class B Championship, and the State Championship Meet. Individual honors went to Bill Lannon--second team Class B, and to Scott Buckless--second team All Blackstone Valley. The season was highlighted by a double victory in the season opener in which Scott Buckless set a course record. The climax to the regular season was in all out team effort which resulted in a 2 point upset victory over Ponaganset. This victory qualified the team to compete in the State Championship Meet. First, the team lost time due to the delayed opening of school, and second, the team had goaltender problems in the beginning of the year. The starting goaltender quit the team after the first game, and the second goaltender quit after several more games. However, Ildelfonzo Vasconalos filled in expertly for the last few games of the season. Many of the players were selected for the All-Division and the All-Valley All-Star Teams. All in all, it was a fairly disappointing 7-7-2 season for the soccer team. This record, though, does not measure the effort and determination put out by all of the players on the team. 1st Row: Nancy Anderson—Manager, Hank Compapiano, Joe Pereira, William Gomes, Mario Beirro, Ken Perry, Sue Oliveira; Second Row: Bob Ricci, Tony Olivera, Jose Rocha, John Riberio, John Pereira, David McCrae, Jose Soares; Third Row: Coach Lou Pezzi, Mark Aspinwall, David DiFonzo, Mike Bums, Carlos Cabral, Mike Maynard, Ildefonzo Vasconcelos, Henry Paulo, Luciano Xavier SOCCER 1975 Pawtucket West Opponent 1 vs. Mt.
