SCIENCE The interdependence of man and plants and their relationship to their environment is the basis of all of our courses. Our aim is to guide our students towards careers in health services, conservation and a wellrounded personal and social life in their community. In our course in physics, we are aware that a real understanding of science is our best motivation. That is why our course is directed so that each student will achieve maximum comprehension. The logical organization of the different topics and the through explanation of these are designed to meet the requirements of today’s physics student. Our course has been expanded so that more time can be spent on important topics such as atomic structure and nuclear reactions. We have carefully selected experiments which will be given to our students at least once a week. In chemistry, we are very much interested in meeting the various curriculum requirements for an introductory course in chemistry. In order to do this, we must present both the chemical theory and the descriptive chemistry. Several weeks are devoted to the study of organic chemistry. This is done because we find our former students who have entered college or a nursing school have found this to be helpful. DRIVER EDUCATION Richard Whitehaed A Driver Education course has been in the West Senior High School curriculum since 1941. In the ensuing years, the program has improved and has been expanded significantly. It is the only program in the State offering both on-the-road training and simulation in conjunction with the State 30-hour classroom program. The purpose of this course is to enable the learner to develop, sustain, and demonstrate a commitment to proficient personal driving and responsible civic action for highway safety. Successful completion of the Driver Education Course (a half-year course) earns two (2) diploma credits. Students also earn a discount on their automobile insurance (most insurers) by completing the course. Those students who are on the honor roll are also eligible for a “Scholarship” discount with most insurers. T. Frank Kilmartin 27
