But tell them not to wait for me; I have far to go before I reach my goal. Three years of preparation, Waiting for our time to come. Those times they passed so quickley; Now nothing is the same. What do we do now — where does the truth come from? Our lives and times have changed; We are all at a different place. No one sure of what he is after. Yet all must run the race. Although our days have been full, We have not learned all we need to know; Let us not wait until our lives are done. Before we learn to grow. Yesterday is behind; But our dreams are not so far away. Will we apply our knowledge? We have time to make a better day. Tomorrow now awaits us. Kathleen Condon 6 • Matthew Bozek — Principal Class of 1974 The class of 1974. has been the distinction of being the first class to come under the direction of our principal Mr. Bozek for all of our three years at West High. During these three years the school has adopted many new ideas in curriculum and student involvement in school affairs. Much of the credit for these innovations and the success realized by them are due to Mr. Bozek. His strong commitment to keep Wesh High School in stride with current trends in education while concurrently maintaining the orderly day to day operations of this school has been no easy task. However, after three years the responsible members of the class of 1974 realize how fortunate we were to have such an able man as our principal. ACADEMICS Normand Lamarre Christine Massie I « I • • • Jay Ryan English The study of English at West High School involves the student’s attempts to recognize himself and his relation to society and the universe through the media of communication and the understanding of literature. This goal is achieved through a wide variety of courses and activities ranging from basic skills programs to a variety of explorations into the humanities, thematic approaches, writing, and independent study. Some new offerings in the department include: Language, How, What, and Why?; Man and Society; Alienation and Individuality in Modern Societies; Creative Writing; Humanities; and Philosophy. Robert A. Stevens William G. Cronin Thomas Coleman Barbara LaCroix Gloria E. DelPapa Department Head Donald Bosworth Mary Kelley Yea, but I swept it yesterday! Ernest Brousseau Veronica Platt Andrea Zalneraitis Margaret A. Stevens Paul Hurley Paul Mazza Vivienne Cote — Department Head FOREIGN LANGUAGE The Foreign Language of West Senior High School offers to student’s the opportunity to study French, Spanish, Italian German, and Latin. The aim is to develop a student’s ability in the four basic skills of these languages with particular emphasis on the speaking — comprehension skills, making it possible for students to communicate in a language other than their own. A language laboratory is an important asset in developing the oral-aural skill of any given language and the one at West High is popular with all the students. At West High School, it is also the objective of teachers in this department to enrich the student’s understanding of the culture of the people whose language they are studying and whose country they may one day visit. 17 Paulette Sepul Emile Chevrette Mary McBurney John Paris 18 Robert Ricci George Lozy MATH Ronald Collette Lucile Kolb Daniel McKinnon G. Russell Burns HISTORY The purposes of the Social Studies courses is to impart sound principles of citizenship; to equip students with the ability to distinguish between propaganda and fact; to encourage study of the past in order to better understand the present and prepare for the future. With this in mind, department members have also put stress on the U.S. Constitutiln — its original text and later interpretations. This curriculum provides a balance-solid academic background as well as reflection of student concerns and interests. 22 BUSINESS We, in the Business Education Field, are primarily concerned with the building of skills and knowledge necessary not only in preparation for business occupations but also in preparation for economic competency in the home and the community. Linda Kelley 24 John O’Reilly Department Head Kenneth Costa Sharon Hanley 25 Charleen Christy John Bezak DRIVER EDUCATION Richard Whitehaed A Driver Education course has been in the West Senior High School curriculum since 1941. In the ensuing years, the program has improved and has been expanded significantly. It is the only program in the State offering both on-the-road training and simulation in conjunction with the State 30-hour classroom program. The purpose of this course is to enable the learner to develop, sustain, and demonstrate a commitment to proficient personal driving and responsible civic action for highway safety. Successful completion of the Driver Education Course (a half-year course) earns two (2) diploma credits. Students also earn a discount on their automobile insurance (most insurers) by completing the course. Those students who are on the honor roll are also eligible for a “Scholarship” discount with most insurers. T. Frank Kilmartin 27 SCIENCE The interdependence of man and plants and their relationship to their environment is the basis of all of our courses. Our aim is to guide our students towards careers in health services, conservation and a wellrounded personal and social life in their community. In our course in physics, we are aware that a real understanding of science is our best motivation. That is why our course is directed so that each student will achieve maximum comprehension. The logical organization of the different topics and the through explanation of these are designed to meet the requirements of today’s physics student. Our course has been expanded so that more time can be spent on important topics such as atomic structure and nuclear reactions. We have carefully selected experiments which will be given to our students at least once a week. In chemistry, we are very much interested in meeting the various curriculum requirements for an introductory course in chemistry. In order to do this, we must present both the chemical theory and the descriptive chemistry. Several weeks are devoted to the study of organic chemistry. This is done because we find our former students who have entered college or a nursing school have found this to be helpful. Elizabeth Kelly Paul Durand Biology Department Head Wilfred Laliberte Chemistry Department Head 28 29 ART The goals of Art Education at West are to present the students with a variety of experiences which will enhance their future lives. The development of aesthetic awareness will result in an increased sensitivity to the environment . . . Not only will the students experience the enjoyment of creative activity but they will also begin to understand and appreciate the work of other artists. “What I want and aim at is confoundly difficult ... I want to do drawings which touch some people ... I like to express serious sorrow ... so that people will say of my work, he feels deeply, he feels tenderly” 1 want my work to show what is in my heart . . . this is my ambition.” Vincent Van Gogh Sandra Whiteley Joan Feldman 30 Thomas Breggia 31 James McNaught PHYSICAL EDUCATION The program of Physical Education is designed so as to promote the development of and to deal directly with the potentials of individuals in the following areas; 1. To develop fundamental skills in a wide variety of activities and the corresponding knowledge there of. 2. To develop and maintain Physical Fitness. 3. To establish desirable health habits. 4. To development leadership abilities and a sense of responsibilities. Joan McCarthy 32 Mrs. Ann Coyle William Brady £ o l-H H U P Q W Distributive Education is a program instruction interracting four qualities: work experience, class room theoy, the DECA club and operation of the school store. Epistomologically distributive education operates under the premis that experience is the best teacher and philosphically that each student is an individual. It is our aim to allow the student to persue his or her career interest and to develop leadership abilities in the areas of marketing and distribution. WORK — STUDY The work-study program at West High School is designed to meet the needs of those students who must work at nearly a full time basis or drop out of school. Under the direction of Stanley LaChut and James Gorman, sophomores and juniors in the work-study program have academic work in the morning and leave for work right after lunch. Seniors work full time days and take their final course work in the evening. Credit toward graduation is given to those students who perform adequately at their job stations. A diploma is awarded to all those satisfactorily completing the three year program. 35 OFFICE STAFF Margaret Whitehead Julia Netto Dorothy Callahan Marion Hitchen MAINTENANCE AND KITCHEN STAFF Excelle Dufreshe, Margara Hutton, Alma Bradsley. West engaged in a non-league schedule consisting of varsity and junior varsity opponents. Under the direction of newly appointed head coach, Louis Pezzi, the West soccer team established itself as a future power in Interscholastic League competition. The team won all its non-league encounters, losing only to a college opponent, the Brown freshman soccer team. West achieved a season record of 14-1 and will be welcomed into the R.I. Soccer League next year. The season began with three shutouts: West 7 — Smithfield 0; West 9 — Portsmouth 0; West 6 — Warwick 0. Barrington was the first team to score a goal against West. The soccer season was an overwhelming success with the help of coach Lou Pezzi. 70 1974 Record 14 Wins — 0 Loses W.H.S. 7 Smithfield 9 Portsmouth 6 Warwick 5 Barrington 6 Tolman 7 W.
