Class Ode The time has passed with quickened pace. The final act is near. We pause and think for just a while Of mem’ries we hold dear. Each day held different challenges; Each curtain rise, a test. Though some were harder than we wished. By each one we progressed. Friends we’ve made have given us A part of what they are, Which we’ll recall in days to come Though we may go afar. Each memory has its sacred place — Engraved upon our hearts, But life holds new awakenings With many different parts. So now we have to look ahead Beyond our days at West And dream of yet unwritten plays And yet unconquered quests. Loretta Buckley The test and the use Of mans education Is that he finds pleasure In the exercise of his mind. Jacques Barzon Life I am crawling in the middle Of a long sentence And can not see the end And do not remember the beginning. I came into this world, not Chiefly to make this a good place To live in, but to live in it. Be it good or bad. Henry David Thoreau 6 unto himself. John Donne is a quality regard If man does not keep pace With his companions. Perhaps it is because He hears a different drummer. Let him step to the music Which he hears. However measured Or far away. Henry David Thoreau The first principle Of a free society Is an untrammeled flow of words In an open forum. Adlai Stevenson throughout his lifetime. FACULTY AND ADMINISTRATION Matthew Bozek Principal The Class of 1973 would like to express its sincere appreciation and gratitude to a very deserving man, our principal, Mr. Matthew Bozek. During our three years at West High School, Mr. Bozek set before us the vital responsibilities that go hand in hand with newly acquired freedoms. Often guidance meant reprimand, but he always gave credit where it was due. For more than this no class can ask and for this we again say thank you. Class of ’73 10 Eleanor F. In some games when the odds were heavily against us, we played well. In others, we were favored and yet wrere defeated. But when we played with the two words which Coach Shacket had put into our vocabularies, pride and desire, the other team knew they were playing a hard, tough football team. In our first league game of the season, Barrington was favored by 21 points. Surprisingly, we led at halftime 14-7. In the third period they had a first down and goal to go at our one-yard line, but our defense made them settle for a 35 yard field goal. The final score of this game was 24-22 in favor of Barrington, but we proved we were a good team. Later, we travelled to North Smithfield, and we thought the game was going to be so easy. We got defeated 34-6. But we won the next week’s game against Hope, 26-6. The next game was to be the one that really counted, Bristol. We practiced hard in preparation, and mostly in the rain and in the mud, for it rained most of the week. (The picture above was taken before this game.) Although Bristol was favored to win by 28 points, midway through the second period of the game, it was 21-0, Wrest. With 1:05 left in the game, it was 28-21, Bristol, and we had the ball on our 20 yard line. We moved with PRIDE and DESIRE. To see two players pick up another to get him back into the game so we could run another play was not uncommon. Fighting the clock along with Bristol, we got to their 25, when Q.B. called time-out and said, We have to do it. If you guys just block for me. I’ll complete this pass. No one said a word; we just looked at each other and knew. We fired out and knocked them back a yard. The Q.B. did his part and completed the pass. With seconds to go, the call was 24, Follow Me. Blanco carried to the one-yard line, where we pulled at his legs to get him out from under the pile of Bristol players. But they just stayed on top of him. and the seconds ticked away, 6-5-4-3-2-1. The game was over! The score remained 28-21, Bristol. The season had its up’s and down’s but, on the whole, it was worth-while. There was also a lesson learned: Through hard work, PRIDE and DESIRE, the realm of victory is within reach. By: Rick Blanco Ron Notardonato 54 Seniors There have been belter bunches on banana trees. The team was made up of individuals who on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning worked together as a team. We wore just about anything and practiced just about anywhere. By lifting weights in the Photography Room, running up and down stairs, around the Cafeteria, up the hill, and through the snow. We went to meets out numbered 3 to 1 but the spirit was always high even if we knew we couldn’t win. We would like to thank Coach Bosworth for dedicating his time and effort, and hope that he will continue Indoor Track.
