mSZSK'DAVS nineteen hundred seventy pawtucket, rhode island voL feta west senior high Zable of SOMETHING TO VALUE: INDIVIDUALITY Don't lose your foce in the crowd foreword two Contents underclassmen...............eighty-six honors .ninety-six seniors...............one hundred-six advertisements, one hundred-forty-eight three Since first coming to West eleven years ago, Mr. Moriarty has been a vital part of the school system. Operating within the framework of our school he has done much to improve West. He has acted as our principal, our advisor, and our friend. He has dedicated a good portion of his life to us and in return, we proudly dedicate our yearbook to him. four Jf a man docs not keep pace with his companions. Perhaps it is because he hears a different drummer. Pet him step to the music which he hears. However measured or far away. What Js a Man, An individual doesn’t mean an anarchist, or a this-ist, or a that-ist. An individual is who you are, no matter -what you are. Arlo Guthrie Think as I think,” said a man or you are abominably wicked, you are a toad. And after I had thought of it, I said, I will, then, be a toad.” Stephen Crane And all the people said, What a shame he’s dead: But wasn’t he a most peculiar man!” Paid Simon I’m sure 1 can’t be Mabel, for I know all sorts of things, and she, oh, she knows such a very little! Besides, she’s she. and I’m I, and — oh, dear, how puzzling it all is! Alice in Wonderland I kept picturing all these little kids playing some game in this big field of rye and all. Thousands of little kids, and nobody’s around — nobody big, I mean — except me, and I’m standing on the edge of some crazy cliff. What I have to do, I have to catch everybody if they start to go over the cliff — I mean if they’re eight Afi(f Mow? I'm just average, common too, Just like him: the same as you. I’m everybody’s brother and son— I aint different than anyone. Maybe you should talk to me— It’s just the same as talking to you! Bob Dylan I understood that centuries of chains and lashes will not kill the spirit of man nor the sense of truth within him. Ayn Rand Sooner or later all the peoples of the world, without regard to the political systems under which they live, will have to discover a way to live together in peace. Martin Luther King running and they don’t look where they’re going. I have to come out from somewhere and catch them. That’s all I’d do all day. I’d just be the catcher in the rye and all. I know it’s all crazy, but that’s the only thing I’d really like to be. I know it’s crazy. HOLDEN CUALFIELD For a man needs only to be turned around once with his eyes shut in this world to be lost — Not till we are lost — Do we begin to find ourselves. Henry David Thoreau nine CATCHER IN THE RYE Janice Gomes Class Ode The wheel of life keeps turning. Each turn a brand new day, It brings to us a moment, Then turns that time away. A million spokes are spinning, A million minutes stray, The wheel brings joyous moments, Then turns those times away. It turns through each occasion, Leaves memories of each day, It brings a note of sadness, Then turns that time away. Our life at West is ended, To God we hope and pray That He will bring us fortitude To turn old times away. Our world still looms before us, But we must not delay Clutching at one single spoke, But face each brand new day. twelve faculty People relate to other people every day of their lives. From each person we gain something, yet from some we gain more than others. In our high school experience we have known many teachers, and hopefully, we have each had at least one teacher who especially impressed and influenced us, one teacher who took interest in us as individuals, one teacher who strove to relate to us and to guide our growth. Such teachers are not easily forgotten. As the Class of 1970 prepares for Graduation, it signalizes the end of three years of preparation for the beginning of a new phase of your lives, and the end of a three-year span during which you practically decided what your future is to be. The beginning and the end are crystalized by the Graduation Exercises, and you are either very happy with the results of your efforts, or disappointed because you failed to take full advantage of your opportunities. Therefore, Graduation night is a night of gladness, or a night of sadness, and. we of the Faculty and Administration desperately wish that it could be the former for all the students in the class. Looking back over your three-year career here at West, you are probably wishing that you could live them over again. You will dwell on all the good things that happened to you, and forget about some of the unpleasant things. By and large, most of you will feel a twinge of nostalgia, and regret that this part of your career had to end sometime. A few will be glad that it is over so that they can get on with the important business of carving out a future career. None, however, will refuse to admit that West has been an important factor in your lives, and pledge their loyalty to the school and its Faculty which shared those three years with you. We of the Faculty and Administration will continue to watch your future activities, and devoutly wish that success will crown your efforts to make us all proud of you, no matter which path you choose. We shall stand ready to help you in any way, and we hope that all of you reach your desired goal and lead happy and fruitful lives. Dominus vobiscum. seventeen I want to extend my congratulations to Ihe Class of 1970. During their three years at West they demonstrated their loyalty, patience and intelligence by their actions. T iis class has been subjected to many outside pressures which provoked demonstrations, vandalism and bodily injuries in many of the high schools throughout the state and nation. During these impatient times your class has demonstrated that change can be accomplished in an orderly exchange of ideas through mutual agreement with faculty and administration. West has offered to you the education and the background necessary to follow your chosen goals. Only you and your conscience can judge whether you took full advantage of what was offered. If you did, then success in your chosen field becomes probable, if not, we have failed. Your generation shows great interest in the problems of society. Many of you have demonstrated your sorrow and concern in your writings and comments. These goals and ideals are fine and each graduating class desires to make their contribution to society. I sincerely hope that you can realize your goals through intelligent and peaceful efforts. In conclusion, I feel that West has contributed toward the fulfillment of your goals. The policy of our school is to educate each individual to his fullest capacity, so that he or she may lead a happy and full life. If you have attained this, along with the ability to make correct decisions, respect for others and their property, then we feel that you have taken another step on that ladder to becoming a productive and useful citizen in this great Republic of ours. During the past year, a student-faculty committee has been instituted in conjunction with the council. Together the students and the faculty have revised the dress code and they are constantly working to improve faculty-student relations. Through the many successful social events, the council has continually endeavored to improve the school. Also, their invaluable services to a local orphanage have won them the respect of the community. The council is comprised of individuals elected by the student body. Collectively, they strive for the betterment of the present and future classes at West High School. Voting for Class Officers Counter clockwise: M. Calabro, A. Robinson; S. Percival; D. Dixon and R. This book represents the ideas of each staff member; it is a composite picture of our thoughts and memories at West. We have tried to make it representative of all students, not just a few members of the class. We want the Westerdays to be a memory book for future years, a book that will help each of us to remember West and one another years from now. Naturally, working S P O D. Rifkin; J. Semonoff; and L. Now months later, we have come to realize that co-operation is not something which is due to us, but rather something which must be developed. As a result of both fun and hard work, the Westerdays was produced. It represents the attainment of a goal to all staff members, that of individuals working toward a common end. L. A person who has both of these qualities is not easily forgotten. Such is Barbara Baron, class valedictorian. Upon first meeting her you are touched by quietness and her blushing face. As you become better acquainted you sense her perceptiveness and warmth. She does all things with graciousness and leaves no job half-finished. At West she has held many positions of leadership and responsibility. As editor-in-chief of Westerdays, and the school representative to the Governor’s Youth Advisory Council, she has maintained her ideals and encouraged others to do the same. Now, Barbara is the recipient of this honor long due her for scholastic excellence, that of valedictorian. We congratulate Barbara for her success. ninety-eight Our salutatorian, Joyce Laudon, has a love for children and a strong interest in teaching. In preparation for a potential career as an elementary school teacher, Joyce tutors at both the East Avenue and Martin Luther King Schools. She enjoys such hobbies as reading and participating in sports activities. At West she has been the recipient of many honors, including the Betty Crocker Award and; she also represented our school on the West High School Bowl Team. She admires honesty in people, and looks for this quality in forming friendships. For her diligence and her efficiency, her ambition and her willingness which have helped her to achieve this high scholastic position, Joyce is to be commended and congratulated. ninety-nine Quotarians Mary-Ann Bagaglia Helen Triantopobus Kotarians (I. to r.)
