Dedication Ideal student to teacher relationship and erudition are attributes truly worthy of towering admiration. Qualities of this nature have been firmly established in the character of one person. Miss Gloria DelPapa not only possesses them, but has constantly endeavored to instill them within ourselves. For these reasons we, the class of 1967, are proud to have the opportunity to dedicate this our issue of Westerdays to Miss Gloria E. DelPapa. Every plane needs a pilot, and every ship needs a captain. The shortest journey can develop into the heaviest burden without the leadership of a man of wisdom. Due to the efforts of one man a problem of large degree could never become a reality here. We, the students of West Senior High School, are most grateful to our Principal, Mr. Thomas J. Moriarty. His multitude of virtues are constant and always in evidence to those around him. We leave Mr. Moriarty with regretfulness, but appreciativeness for his command of this, our voyage, to future destinies. fiL Mr. Thomas J. Moriarty Principal 1967 Yearbook Message As the time approaches for your use in my final message to the Class of across the following quotation: ' E le words I should n, I ponder ovi Recently in my random veryone has his own, specific vocation or mission in liU; everyone carry out a concrete assignment that demands fulfillment. Therein he not be replaced nor can his life be repeated. Thus, everyone s task is as unique as his specific opportunity to implement it. Now that you have been at least partially prepared academically and socially to face the world, you should seek to add meaning to your life. Seek to gain a keener appreciation of: 1) who and what you are; 2) where you came from; 3) why you are here; and 4) where you are going..The more effectively you struggle with such questions of profound significance, the more likely you will be able to grasp yo ir own eternal worth and to assist others to find meaning in their lives. Whethter you are in the home, at work, or at college, you owe it to yourself and to others to give your best. Do not let frustration, hardship, or opposition deter you Jrom living up to your responsibilities with the quiet enthusiasm that can transform the humdrum of everyday life into a meaningful challenge. No matter what your position in life, you need a high goal or purpose as mpch as the air you breathe, most people 'muff their chances for personal development by paying too much attention to self and too little to others. Your efforts to promote the best interests of everybody may be a painful experience. Be ready to pay the price. You literally come alive when you give as well as receive. Look for waysj ta leave the world better for your having been in it. Of all the messages I have given you during the past three y0 rs, this is perhaps the most important one. And now, as I say farewell , mayl rommendthis outstanding Class of 1967, a class which I learned to respect and admire; a class whoseSuture attainments will bring honor and prestige to ur school. I am sincerely grateful for, and appreciative of, the wonderful cooperation you have given us and the spirit of loyalty you have shown. Keep us as intensely proud of you in the future as we are today. II I |!| 9 Mr. William J. McDole Vice-Principal Pink slips, yellow slips, white slips, and Room 272 are perhaps the recollections of some of our Assistant Principal, Mr. William McDole. For most of us he is a hearty laugh, a genuine sense of humor, and ever-thinking and ever-planning for the welfare of our students. Always a disciplinarian, but foremost a friend we leave Mr. McDole with many thanks for so much we have taken from him. Miss Eleanor F. Cullen Dean Schedules, record cards, applications, recommendations, and an air of friendliness is the atmosphere surrounding our Dean, Miss Eleanor Cullen. Constantly busy, but always with a moment for a cheerful hello, and a sound answer for our problems expresses the true character of our Dean. Perhaps it is this pleasant manner that will always fix Miss Cullen dearly in our hearts. ■ 11 Guidance Counselor Decisions, indecisions, where do we go, who could we see, why Miss Christine Massie of course! During our stay here at West, we have oil been plagued by the problems of educational guidance. The burdens of confusion have constantly been eased through consultation with our Guidance Counselor, Miss Christine Massie. Always behind us when we turn, and before us when we seek her is the unfaltering hand of the person to whom we are AiSS CHfistin© WoSSi© so grateful. Social Advisor Soft Candle-lit suppers, a romantic interlude during the last dance, and the final pleasures of all social activities become realities under the guidance of Mr. Donald Bosworth. As a teacher and Social Advisor, Mr. Bosworth has been the guiding force in the success of all class events. For this we are appreciative of his most prosperous efforts. Mr. Donald Bosworth 12 MR. Goldberg PATRICIA KELLEY Activities Editor WESTERDAYS The rush to meet a final deadline ... a misplaced picture . . . lost copy and frequent errors on the typewritten sheet are some of the obstacles which plagued the members of this year's Westerdays staff on many an occasion. Westerdays was created by a cooperative effort of many separate staffs. Layouts were drawn, data was gathered, pictures were taken and arranged, and all were assembled into various sections. Ads were solicited from patrons and businessmen. For months the staffs planned and met with their editors and produced their particular portions of the book. This, the 1967 issue of Westerdays is the evidence of their untiring efforts. 32 LAYOUT STAFF: A. Moriono (ed.J M. Morcotte Westerdays WESTERDAYS STAFF: 1st ROW: J. Lipet, C. Gattinella, K. Baron, J. The crowds stare captivated as curtains are drawn, and the vibrant beauty of the imagination springs to life. There upon stage scenes are molded to perfection, as actors shed their individual characteristics, to make believable their temporary portrayal. Through the Dramatic Society one is given the chance to display his talents, and to join in activities benefiting himself and the school. In past presentations, talents have been acknowledged, and success truly deserved have been achieved. Once more an attempt at success is being tried and though triumph is uncertain the spirit lingers as The South Pacific goes into production. For the stage, through dramatics, is the means of communication, the merriment of make believe, and the warmth of success. 1st ROW: B. Steorns, E. Papogeorge, G. O'Connell, G. DeMello. 2nd ROW: D. STUDENT COUNCIL The organization which sets an active and invigorating pace throughout the school is the social and legislative student council. Its projects are conducted for the betterment of the school and its students and for the benefit of the community. While achieving its many successes the council has helped increase the morale and strengthen the unity of the student body. This year's social activities have included the annual trike drag races, the get acquainted, hootenanny and Sadie Hawkins dances, and the traditional May Frolic. Honors Day was one of the highlights of the year. Community projects have included the collection of Christmas gifts for orphans and a collection day for an alumnus wounded during combat in Vietnam. A unique new project was the adoption of an Indian brother . The members of the council, with the cooperation of the student body, have helped to make our days at West more profitable and enjoyable. Would I be proud to work there? Reputation for square dealing with employees? Pleasant surroundings? Will I be working with others my own age? Are they friendly? Do they socialize after hours? Will the boss be reasonable? Appreciate good, hard work, but won’t explode if I make a mistake? • Will I make a decent week’s pay? Have a chance for raises, advancement, more responsibility? How about fringe benefits? Is the work challenging? I had what it takes to get through high school. Will they give me a chance to use my brains?
