WESTERDAYS 1966 West Senior High School Pawtucket, Rhode Island Vol. XXVI TAKE FAST H O7 JNSTRUCTIO OR SHE LS THY LA The short, staccato count, 5—6—7—8—9—10, the impish grin, the creator of ideas, the deep sense of responsibility briefly portrays our prince of advisors, Mr. Manuel Fernandes We the class of 1966, hereby dedicate this year's WESTERDAYS to Mr. Manuel Fernandes and Mr. John J. O'Reilly, the two individuals without whose unparalled devotion this publication would not have been possible. Not only in this capacity, but as teacher, counselor and friend, each of these men has reached the apex of success. The financial wizard with a twinkle in his eyes who cares, who takes an interest, who is always available whenever he is needed aptly describes our business advisor, Mr. John J. O'Reilly. 7 MESSAGE TO THE GRADUATING CLASS Eighteen hundred years ago, Marcus Aurelius Antoninus, Roman Emperor and Philosopher, said: Do not act as if you had a thousand years to live . What more appropriate message could be given to a graduating class as they leave their high school days behind and launch out upon the serious business of carving out a career for themselves! As we wake each morning, we are faced with 24 golden hours, of 60 minutes each, ours to utilize, ours to squander, ours to do with as we please. No one can give us more than these 24 hours, no one can take away any part of them. What use we make of them, whether we spend them in profitable enterprise, whether we waste them in time-consuming trivial-ites, is entirely up to us. Only we can give an accounting of how we spent that precious time! It takes almost as much time and energy to fail as it does to succeed. Why then, if with the same energy we must use in any case, we might be succeeding, do we so seldom live the lives we hoped and planned to live? Part of the answer lies in the careless use of time, in making excuses for our failures, in trying to convince ourselves that we didn't have time, that we did not get the breaks , any one of a myriad of excuses for our failure to utilize our time. Any person who has failed can provide himself with an alibi for that failure, but it takes real honest-to-goodness courage to make each failure a stepping-stone, to rise above failure, to learn from them. And courage is the sine qua non of success. Success is exactly equivalent to doing our best, and only by acting as if it were impossible to fail can we discover the farthest reaches of what our best may offer. My fondest wish for the graduating class is personal success in whatever you undertake, in whatever sphere of life you choose to follow, no matter how important or how humble. Your personal success may not be acclaimed by the world, but at least it will give you that inner glow, that sense of well-being that personal satisfaction which permeates our consciousness when we have made the most of our abilities and our opportunities. Such success can only reflect credit upon yourselves, and upon the institution you are now leaving. Do not act as if you had a thousand years to live ! (K{ the king p faciA YOUR MR. WILLIAM J. DORIS KENYON Girl's Physical Education Class Ode Reach for something higher on the ladder of success, The midpoint has been reached by us but we must climb the rest. For the knowledge we have gained in all the years gone by Will guide our footsteps toward our goals which we have set so high. If trying times are met face on and struggles overcome. The burden will be lessened and we may climb another rung Reflecting on these fruitful years which at West were so well spent. With pride we'll climb that ladder and faith will not relent. —Judith Kaplan 14 i - Alma Mater Far above all other standards rise the buff and blue. Anything which concerns the betterment of the school climate may be on the agenda of these spirited gatherings. Old traditions, such as the crowning of the May Queen and the annual Honors assembly, are carried on. New ideas are generated, resulting in novelties like the Hootenanny Hop and tricycle drag races. Public service, such as is shown in the Christmas project for less fortunate youngsters, is encouraged. Dances, sales of school spirit items, educational displays in the rotunda-all come under the Council's scope. For all its many activities the Council wants to acclaim, deriving its satisfaction from being an integral part of the vital West High school scene. Jubilant winner, Raymond Michalopolous. The joy of winning and the pathos of loss that it difficult to portray on stage. All down through the ages, it seems, man has been attempting to perfect his skill in the portrayal of personalities other than his own on the stage. First the Egyptians, then the Greeks with their bare stages, and uncostumed players, followed by the Romans, and finally the English with William Shakespeare, and his special presentations at the Globe. And so too, this spirit of the stage has not been neglected at West High. It makes its home in the minds and hearts of the members of the West High Dramatics Society who, in the past years have staged innumerable plays, play festivals, and musicals. On December 10, 1965, the Dramatic Society set in motion their undertakings for the 1965-66 season. Their first presentation to the student body was the annual class dramatic competition. The one-act plays this year were as follows; the Sophomores, The True in Heart ; the Juniors, Infanta ; and the Seniors, Echo . The judges unanimously selected the Junior play as the best of the three presented. Unlike any previous season the Dramatic Society will be trying to achieve greater acknowledgements.as they enter the winning play, Infanta , in statewide competition. Looking ahead to the rest of the season, it has been decided that the Dramatic Society will present, The Sound of Music, as its main attraction. Keeping in mind the fine display of talent exhibited last year, it is expected that the student body will anxiously await this year's presentation which everyone hopes will follow in the footsteps of last season's success. Perseverance and diligent study are the keys which unlock the door of success for Linnea. In addition to maintaining her high academic standing, Linnea has found time to become an active participant in many extracurricular activities. She was one of several from the Pawtucket area who attended the Girl Scout Round-Up in Idaho last summer. She is currently president of the Lutheran League. Her true Westerner spirit can best be exemplified by her selection as one of two Junior Quotarians. Linnea's participation in the Scholarship Club is a further indication of her desire to help her fellow Westerners. Linnea's past accomplishments indicate that her future will truly be a successful one. The Rangers received this same vibrant, shouting encouragement during every home game. Fine spirit, unity, and overall team improvement kept the Rangers constantly in the game as Tolman discovered in the first game of their inter-city rivalry (74-72). In true West spirit the team never quit although they were stymied and hampered by lack of height and bench strength. Then suddenly this same tremulous audience unable to contain itself any longer burst into spontaneous applause complimenting the sensitive portrayal of the ugly dwarf by Junior Gary Stern. His performance assured the trophy for the Juniors and their play, The Infanta. Ably supported by G. Mooney, C. Chaves, L. Blais, and M. Chapdelaine, the Juniors truly deserved the accolade, one of the best bits of acting we've had in quite some time. We are anticipating that the Infanta will bring laurels to our school when it is presented in the R. I. Drama Festival in March. Judge's decision brings unrestrained joy to winning group of thespians. Junior Dramatics Mother, I prefer my dwarf to Ringo. Madam, may I have my necklace back. 130 Indian giver. I cannot do everything, But still I can do something; And because I cannot do everything I will not refuse to do the something that I can do. Edward Everett Hale An important fact of educational life is that students learn much from one another. A good illustration of this point may be observed at the left. N. Hochman and H.
