WESTERDAYS 1964 WEST Senior High School Pawtucket, Rhode Island Foreword Now, once again, a day has ended, its brilliance muted by the grayness of twilight; its joy, sorrow, hope, and discouragement dulled by her imperturbable calm. Yet, if we try, we can see through the gathering darkness the shadows of things that were . . . goals set and goals attained; traditions honored and traditions broken; simple routines endured and cherished; bells, exams, and, above all. the people, who, whether cheering or ciying, did it together. These fading shadows are the years that were West. Theirs is the spirit we have tried to capture in WESTERD AYS '64. a book dedicated to. . . 3 In Hbmoriam JJnlut JFitzgrralii KnutriUj 35th President of The United States of America ittaij 2a. lair number 22. 1003 Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country. Inaugural Address Principal’s Message MEMORIES REMEMBER—the eventful day 3 years ago when you entered the halls of West High School for the first time? There was an air of bewilderment perhaps, mixed with qualms, fears, expectation, and determination. Everything was different, new faces, new teachers, new associations. Gradually, after a period of orientation, school life settled down and the race for academic supremacy was on. REMEMBER—the school activities, the social affairs, the athletic contests, all contributing to the social life of the school, all with some measure of enjoyment and relaxation. Perhaps too there were little disappointments, seemingly tragic at the time, but now all mellowed and practically forgotten with the passing of time. REMEMBER—the ties and the friendships you have made, some of which will endure forever, others may not. You have made an indelible imprint upon the history of the school, and the classmates who have helped and contributed to the outstanding record of this class of 1964 should be knitted together more closely because of their share in compiling this record. REMEMBER—as you go your separate ways, that even as you enter other fields of endeavor or institutions of higher learning, and form other ties and friendships, you should never forget your Alma Mater and the happy years you spent therein. We of the faculty and staff will never forget you, and the contribution you have made to the glorious history of West High. We wish for all of you success and happiness in your future careers. Thomas J. Moriarty, Principal 8 Thomas J. Moriarty 9 Miss Eleanor Cullen Although she is a newcomer to West, Miss Cullen soon found hundreds of frustrated seniors, impatient juniors, and eager sophomores crowding her office. Fitting quickly into the routine, she dispatched all her tasks with efficiency and aplomb, and thus won the admiration of faculty and students alike. We were all curious, when Miss Mc-Kitchen left, as to what sort of a woman it would take to fill her shoes. We know we have found the answer in Miss Cullen. Bradford Bachrach Mr. William McDole Assistant Principal Never an advocate of change for change’s sake, yet ever eager for improvement, Mr. McDole has led our yearbook, newspaper, and school on to success. With his promotion to assistant principal, Mr. Dole has continued to guide us, wisely yet tactfully, with a ready smile and an ever-extended hand. All of us join in saying thanks, Mr. McDole, for being a friend we could count on. Miss Christine Massie Guidance Counselor If numbers are any indication, the guidance office was among the most popular places for seniors this year. Not the least reason for this was our ever-available counselor, Miss Massie, who always managed to reduce our earth-shattering problems to more realistic proportions and then help us solve them. If we, at times, felt she expected too much of us, it is only a reflection of her general op- timism and good cheer, which somehow made our futures seem a little less frightening. We only hope we can carry some of her goodwill with us into the years ahead. Bradford Bachrach Miss Elizabeth Kelly Social Advisor One of the most important aspects of high school life las any Fre«hman can tell you) is the Dance. For three consecutive years, Miss Kelly has borne our pre-Sophomore Hop, Junior Promenade, Senior Reception hysterics with wisdom and patience; and has helped to make all our social functions truly memorable affairs. We thank you. Miss Kelly, for working to help us play. II Mr. Manuel Fernandes Yearbook Advisor An open mind is a rare virtue. Mr. Manuel Fernandes possesses such a quality. He willingly listens to the ideas and suggestions of staff members before reaching final conclusions. He is highly esteemed by the student body for his enthusiasm and interest. Although it was his first year as advisor to this publication. Mr. Fernandes has displayed a great aptitude in the coordination and promotion of the yearbook. His z?al will never be forgotten. The clamor of dissent, the relief of compromise. the silence of concentration in Room 31 Mr. John J. O’Reilly Business Advisor Mr. John J. O’Reilly has played an integral part in the business management of the ’61 Yesterdays. His constant efforts to encourage students to solicit advertising is appreciated by everyone. He has displayed his interest in student affairs in every capacity he has ever filled. Indeed, his well-rounded personality has been a source of inspiration to all members of the yearbook staff. The graduating class also acknowledges his contribution of vital interest in the success of our educational and social endeavors. Check, check, check, and recheck as WESTERDAYS’ finances undergo a final scrutiny. A familiar face in the Art Department was Miss Maloney’s. We hope her retirement will be a pleasant reward for a well-spent life. Retirement has claimed another of our teachers. Miss McVay, who taught in the Pawtucket School System for many years. Miss Jackson brought to girls’ physical education a freshness and enthusiasm we couldn’t help catching. McKitchen Dean 1949-1963 When years have passed and high school memories grow dim, there is one face that will remain clear beyond the rest—that of a woman who, with kindness, capability and charm, guided the thousands of students seeking help at her door. Flying high our dear old banner glorious to view, Mater Lift the chorus, speed it onward, ne’er let praises fail, Here’s to you we all are singing, Dear Old West High — Hail. 70 Class Ode No longer to the ocean will we go To build our fragile castles in the sand; No longer watch the fading daylight weave The drifting clouds into a rainbow band. Why leave these gentle pastimes on the shore To tempt the wiles and fury of the sea? Do honor, wealth and glory shine so bright To blind us to some future tragedy? Already we are masters of the beach — The ocean laughs at our pretended state Can we e’er conquer all the future holds When we still linger at the edge of fate? The sea sweeps in; our labor’s washed away But for a single castle which still stands: Another wave — ’tis gone; now we must leave — Already castles rise at others’ hands. Yet as we run to meet the turning tide; The sands cling to us still, as if to say: “Remember e’er these years upon the beach But live tomorow as a bright new day.” Ronni Kern 71 72 73 ACTIVITIES SENIOR EDITORS, Sybil Mellion and Diane Friedman, plan section while FACULTY EDITORS, Linda Souza and Susan Semonoff enter Room 31. Oh, to be sure, an occasional outburst disturbs the tranquility of the empty corridors, hut on the whole they look like a harmless enough bunch. Yet their bite is fatal. They silently and efficiently win contest after contest (Voice of Democracy, anyone?): they effectively defend every bill they favor and squelch any which they dislike at U.R.I.’s Model Congress. The anxiety of tryouts, the perseverance of rehearsal, and finally, wonderfully, opening night . . . At eight-fifteen on December 1963, the curtain rang up on an empty stage amid a hush of expectancy. Although this technically signalled the start of the first of three one-act plays presented that night, it also symbolized the arrival of a new coach, a new crop of actors, and a new concept in dramatics at West Senior High. In addition to these three plays (Kitty, Kitty; The Next of Kin; and The Lottery—presented by the Sophomores, the prize-winning Juniors, and the Seniors respectively) which played to a capacity audience, a spring production, H.M.S. Pinafore, was also presented by the Society. Dramatics Dramatic coach, WALLACE M. HI I LI.AW THESPIANS ALL H.M.S. Pinafore 91 The West High Band 92 A few lonely notes fall in the afternoon sun ... . Beethoven’s Fifth If superlatives are ever given to activities, the most versatile award will definitely go to the Music Department, headed by Mr. Herman Toro. This very audible department (especially during regular period II) is really composed of three sometimes overlapping sections: the Concert Band, the Chorus, and the Dance Band, the baby of the family. Besides performing at most school assemblies, games, and, in the case of the Dance Band, dances, the West High musicians have also participated in innumerable activities in the community. The West High Chorus A music appreciation class concentrates on the day’s score. The chorus also contributed its musical talent to the community last Christmas, when it sang on the steps of the City Hall. Our parents and friends were also entertained by the 50-odd voices at assemblies during the year. The prime achievement of the entire Department. however, was its notably successful Pops Concert late last fall, in which all three sections participated, forcefully illustrating the co-operation that is the key factor in all West's musical activities. This accomplishment is definitely in keeping with the trend set by the class—a trend very prominent on the next four pages—that of excellence through effort. Top Ten at West “One little, two little, three little Rangers . . .” All the way down the line these students have left their mark on all fields at West. Here, seated in order of class rank, they receive honors for unsurpassed academic achievement. Class Ode Winner Addicted to the music of words and the mystery of the sea, Ronni has combined these interests in summing up the fear and anticipation of graduation. The ode, which appears on page 71, is only an indication of this senior’s deep interests in creative writing which she hopes to make a part of her future. Valedictorian The valedictory position is not a new one to Donna who also occupied it at her junior-high graduation. Her continuous, conscientious effort has won her not only this honor, but the admiration of students and teachers alike. Sustained study is the keynote here, and Donna has hit it squarely. Salutatorian Of all the outstanding qualities possessed by this year’s salutatorian, Arlene Fellner, the ones which most readily come to mind are perseverance and modesty. Whether struggling to keep up with some longer-legged pedestrian or “merely” achieving consistent 100’s, Arlene has done so quietly. Now, after long last, does she receive the honor due her. 102 Betty Crocker Award Is it our imagination or is that baboon blood Ron-ni is sampling? “It has an excellent flavor,” she assures us, and who else but a Homemaker of Tomorrow would know? Nevertheless, they played the best game they could, and, as the crowds that turned out every Saturday testified, an interesting one as well. pigskin, the shocked silence when a man is down, the boundless joy of victory ... 113 West High Five Aided by the sharpshooting of 6’2” Tom McGrath and the fine ball handling of Captain Mendes, the West High Five demonstrated their boundless spirit and potential this season. Although the Rangers failed to achieve an enviable record, in games against cross-city rival Tolman. and against Pilgrim, they managed to provide enough action to keep the fans on the edge of their seats; cheering for victories that just missed being ours. More fortunately, however, Mt. St. Charles succumbed twice to the West team. Early in the season, sophomores L. Frade and J. Jeanotte were promoted to the varsity. These boys together with junior N. Erno and sophomore E. Danielson show promise for a more successful season next year. Regardless of their dismal record, the Rangers deserve recognition for utcir accomplishment this season. Yes, from the initial trouncing of Saints, 63-30, through a second and a fifth at the Interscholastics, and on to the end of a successful season, the West swim team has been go-go-going all the way. • «• W, TM„. T. C„,„„. Led by All-Stater Mike McGrath, this year’s crosscountry team raced to victory in its first five meets and ended its season defeated only by Classical and Saint Rapheal. After defeating Moses Brown in the first competition of the season, the team went on to roll up winning scores over six other teams, among them Cumberland and Tolman. After practicing at the Lincoln Country Club in Lincoln, the team played such courses as the Pawtucket Country Club, the Rhode Island Country Club and the Alpine Country Club in matches against Rogers, La Salle and Tolman, among others. Now, at the end of a successful season, we give to Number One Man, Larry Casey, and the rest of the team, the fifteen cheers they never heard on the eighteenth hole. A. Not only is this team number one in the state and third in New England, but also is more than ably led by Frank Durao and Bruce Kiernan. who just happen to lead the state individually in the same order and as a pair in the doubles. While amazed at the freakish accident that placed both these tyros in the same school, the rest of the team is not too stunned to do its share in helping our team to victory. We are prouder than proud of Our Tennis Team. It has enabled us to hold our heads up when discussions turn to sports.
