“
Foreword As we open the cover of “Westerdays, 1962, our theme. “WEST HIGH AND THE COMMUNITY IT SERVES , is immediately apparent. The panoramic aerial view of the school depicts it as the center of culture and learning in the area. The inscriptions on the building point up the importance of learning and knowledge. I he motto of the school is inscril)ed over the main entrance; “Take fast hold of instruction for she i thy life,” a motto further exemplified in the gold seal on the floor of the main lobby depicting the Father of all learning, St. Thomas Aquinas. The four cardinal virtues of PRUDENCE, FORTITUDE, TEMPE RANCE, AND JUSTICE, are reflected in the attitude and the philosophy of all students oi W est High. Indy. West High serves its community in the highest tradition, the advancement of culture and knowledge, the real foundation for a fruitful and successful life. W ES-TERDA S looks forward with courage, and looks hack without regret. 2 In Dedication to Mr. John B. Richer Although Mr. Richer’s position is not always the most pleasant, he has always fulfilled his duties with more than enough ability. He is a man who has always had the interest of the students foremost in mind and has been as indispensible to our principal as he has been to the principles of obedience and sincerity. The Senior Class of 1962 realizes the contributions he has made to the betterment of our character. We therefore dedicate the 1962 WESTERDAYS to a man we greatly admire. The Seniors Principal’s Message Relentlessly time moves forward, and yesterday’s Sophomores are suddenly Seniors, and it is tirrie to say farewell. In the interim, we of the Staff and Faculty have learned to admire and respect you as individuals and friends. It is our fond hope that the lessons inculcated during your three years at West High have found a solid basis in your minds and hearts. We earnestly beseech you to look forward with courage, and look back without regret, because only in doing so may your futures be assured and your ambitions realized. Thomas J. Moriarty, Principal MISS MARY E. KELLEY Social Advisor As we leave West, we would like to extend to Miss Mary E. Kelley our sincerest thanks. Through her unceasing efforts our social life at West became more pleasant. Her advice aided the committees in making their best and sometimes difficult decisions. Her self-sacrifice and desire to help are appreciated by all seniors, for we leave not with emptiness, but with a mind and heart filled with joys and memories never to be forgotten. MISS MARY J. McKITCHEN— Dean Guiding us through the darkness of indecision Miss Mary J. McKitchen has been a shining light to the class of 1962. She has tried to steer us down the path of righteousness. Within the Dean’s domain, we have been helped, encouraged, and directed toward our futures, whether it be the college or business fields. We would like to leave a sincere “thank-you” to Miss McKitchen for her devotion and untiring effort. MISS MARY C. McKEOUGH—Class Counselor Many of the class of 1962 have been perched anxiously on the familiar chair beside Miss Mary C. McKeough’s desk. Reporting to us our faults and explaining recoveries with awareness, she has been a comfort to us during our days of confusion. Miss McKeough has enabled us to discern among our opportunities and the practicalities of our problems. She has been kind and understanding, and we shall remember her with the understanding that she understood. MISS ANNA C. BROPHY Class Counselor Looking back upon our years at West, the Class of ’62 realizes with deep, appreciation the devotion with which Miss Anna C. Brophy, our guidance counselor, steered us along the winding path. Her understanding and wise judgment aided many students in making intelligent decisions for both themselves and their families. It is largely through her guidance that we now leave West with determination, whether it be for college, business schools, or future jobs. Mr. William J. McDole -Westerdays’ Advisor It is a rare and gratifying experience for one to encounter a person who has a ready laugh, an abundant reserve of energy, and a sincere interest in all those around him. Those at West High who know and have worked with Mr. William J. McDole realize how invaluable and likeable a person can be. Mr. McDole is a man who is much engrossed in his work and in those who work with him. Being a sympathetic, understanding person, he has helped us to cross seemingly impassable bridges an indefinite number of times. Without him. the 1962 WESTERDAYS could never have been. He has proved so many times that a good coach has a winning team by the numerous amount of awards that both the Westerdays and the Westerner have received under his advisorship. (Of course, he gives all the credit to the students who work with him.) If this whole yearbook were to be filled with a list of the admirable characteristics of Mr. William J. McDole, there would be room enough to print only the smallest fraction. We, the WESTERDAYS staff, can only express to him our heartfelt thanks. Graduates Senior Class Officers SHIRLEY A. Never before has a flip of a coin decided such a great honor. The outcome of this wager concluded that Fern be valedictorian and David salutatorian. We hope that after they have been set afloat on the sea of humanity, they will set a straight course toward success in life. 90 Salutatorian David Slaney National Merit Scholars (Honorable Mention) The torch of learning has burned brightly in the minds of David Slaney and Carl Friedman, for they have shone honorably as National Merit Scholars. It is a great honor to know that we have students like Carl and David who have the qualities that enable them to shine throughout the nation and rank among the top one per cent of our country’s intellect. Congratulations and a sincere thank-you to Carl and David, not only for a recognition of their own ability, but for having bestowed the honor on West. Rhode Island Honor Society Within the hounds of little Rhody a select few are named to the Rhode Island Honor Society. These students, justify that honor, by working diligently at their schooling endeavors. They have maintained a high academic rating to signify their aptitude and attitude. This year David Casper was selected by Mr. Hebert Dimlich and Mr. Wilfred J. Laliberte as the most promising and apt student in this field of concentration. Dave has demonstrated his ability by maintaining high academic averages in each subject. We, the class of 1962, would like to commend him on his achievement. 94 All Around Business Student Carol Bradley is the first student at West High to receive the Underwood Award as the Best All Around Student. Carol, an active senior, has always had an avid interest in school work. She has maintained a remarkable all “A” average for her three years at West High, and is a girl who is adept in many fields of business. She has always taken her school work seriously and is most deserving of the Underwood Award. Underwood Award Winners Best Typist Claire McCormick is also the first student in the history of West to receive the Underwood Award as Best Typist. Claire, a sparkling senior, has always had a fine typing ability. Her sixty-four words per minute typing average has proven beyond any doubt that she is the queen of the West typists. She participates in many activities both in and out of school. One of her extracurricular activities includes being one of the official typists of the WESTERDAYS. Westerner Awards The Westerner (school newspaper) has been acclaimed, accredited, and praised for its pencraft, editorial comment, and general make-up. For three consecutive years, the newspaper has won the St. Bonaventure University Award. It has progressed from a certificate of merit to first place and then to a special citation for outstanding achievement for a high school publication. Cheryl Gershman, among other graduated individuals, has been singled out for her journalistic endeavors. The Westerner was also twice cited by the Columbia Scholastic Press Association. Walking away with seven certificates of excellence at the University of Rhode Island Conference, this year’s newspaper and WESTER-DAYS’ staff were mighty proud of their school’s high status. Already the 1962 Westerner has been merited by receiving a silver cup at the Stonehill College Conference being rated second in New England among high school publications. (Photos Courtesy ASSOCIATED PRESS AND PAWTUCKET TIMES) 138 As the world turns, and time speeds by at an ungainly pace, we now realize the changes that have taken place in our society during our three year sojourn at West High. Once absurd fantasies became realistic. Men traveled through the atmosphere trying to give their country a foothold on the moon. Humanity was being squelched in Hungary, Laos, Viet Nam, Cuba, the Congo, Berlin, and Algeria. The peoples of these countries rose in revolt to obtain a taste of freedom, the same freedom that we, as Americans, casually enjoy daily. Trying to preserve the rights of their people, the United States has manipulated haphazard agreements between the discerning factors. These “neutral” nations have sought support from both the East and West. For example, the Batista government of Cuba was overthrown by a young upstart, Fidel Castro, on January 1, 1958. After considering the better prospects of aligning itself either to the United States or the Kremlin, the island became a smoldering “Red” volcano. Meanwhile the executive office of the United States underwent a radical change. Republican Dwight D. Eisenhower was succeeded by Democrat John F. Kennedy. During President Eisenhower’s administration, the fateful U-2 incident disrupted the Paris Peace Conference. Premier Khrushchev tramped out of the Summit meeting proclaiming loudly the lowness of the U. S. and ending the Peace Talks. The U-2 aircraft, manned by Frances Gary Powers, was shot down over Soviet SUBSIDED KHRUSHCHEV WAVES GOODBYE—Nikita Khurshchev waves goodby as he leaves the Soviet delegation headquarters on New York’s Park Avenue for Idlewild Airport and his flight home to Moscow. ASTRONAUT JOHN GLENN is shown as he readied himself in Hanger S at Cape Canaveral for his historic orbital flights around the earth inside the Mercury “Friendship 7” space capsule. Have Lived Through Russia. Powers was convicted as a spy and sentenced to ten years in a Russian prison. On February 10, 1962, seven months after the diplomatic disaster, Powers was exchanged for the Soviet’s top American spy, Rudolf Abel. Time after time, cruel border massacres on the Israeli border by Arab marauders, have been used as an instrument to retard the growth of that freedom loving nation. The courage of these people and others like them throughout our society should give us faith in the future. Russia succeeded in putting the first vehicle in space, first armed with a monkey, then a man, Uri Gagarian. In this phase of science Russia forged ahead until February 20, 1962, when our third man in space, Lt. Col. John Glenn, made three revolutions around the earth’s surface on a fully televised broadcast. The area and population was increased when the Congress of United States added Alaska and Hawaii to the then present forty-eight, totaling fifty states united for peace. Segregation was slurred all over the front pages of the world’s journalist endeavors, when race riots occurred in Little Rock, Arkansas. Looking at the bright side of the news, the striking appearance and manner of the First Lady of the United States, Jacqueline Kennedy, converted our nation and the world into a mutual admiration society. (Photos Courtesy ASSOCIATED PRESS AND PAWTUCKET TIMES) 139 Mr. Francis T. McManus The torch of learning necessitates a clean environment. Mr. Francis Terence McManus has kept West’s light bright and shining, but will retire this year after twenty-one years of watchful care and consideration for every nook and cranny of this building. Mr. McManus has served in many capacities under the three different administrations since the school was founded, working year round, repairing, and sometimes even rebuilding West’s hallowed halls. The class of 1962 would like to leave saying a sincere “thank you” to Mr. McManus for his help and support while wre were at West. We hope that he will enjoy his retirement as well as, we know' he has enjoyed his work here as chief custodian. 140 Advertisements For the Best in Tenpin Bowling —FREEWAY TENPIN LANES— 680 Branch Ave., Providence, R.
