1959 Published by Zhe Senior Class West High School Pawtucket, Rhode Jstand I We, the class of 1959, are proud to dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Charles E. Shea, retiring principal of West High School and newly appointed Superintendent of the Pawtucket School System. It is with a feeling of mixed emotions that we realize that he is graduating along with our class. He has served not only as a principal, but also as a father and friend. It is our hope that, by dedicating our yearbook to Mr. Shea, we have been able to express our gratitude and our sincere appreciation for all that he has done for our class. Principal's Message Dear Class of 1959: Hail and farewell to the nineteenth class to be graduated from Pawtucket West Senior High School. You have been a very loyal and cooperative class during your three years at West. We both leave this grand school together, but our hearts will always treasure the memories of the happy and fruitful years spent here. Your teachers and I look forward to your continued growth in character, scholarship, and good citizenship. We know that you will be a credit to your family, your school, and to our country. Congratulations and best wishes to all of you. Sincerely, CHARLES E. SHEA, Principal A JOHN E. Class Ode by IVA DASILVA A chapter ends, a new begins, In our lives this memorable day. The time has come to bid farewell And each to go his separate way. Before we part let us review The days we’ve spent within these walls. Memories of good times, old friends, Joys and sorrows we recall. There our future lies before us. Step by step we’ll tread the way, Knowing not what fate may bring, For only God above can say. Standing side by side we pray that He who brought us here this day Will guide us on the road ahead, The light of faith to show the way. Mr. William fj. Mc Dole We wish to express our sheerest thanks for all he has done in making our yearbook a huge success. His time, patience, and guidance have been unselfishly extended to make his first year at West a truly outstanding one. BUSINESS MANAGER Donna Fishman I Westerdays Hoard FIRST ROW: B. Paiva, S. The success of our Reception was a credit to the hard workers of the Senior Reception Committee chosen by the class officers and advised by Miss Elinor Monahan. The Senior Reception is the event of events of our high school social life. It was a very happy occasion; yet it brought a slight touch of sadness, for we soon would be parting. The Class party was a gay and happy affair celebrated by the graduating class. With the help of the teachers, the seniors were able to have fun in the West gym and to make their class party a social success. CLASS PARTY COMMITTEE FIRST ROW: C. Fishlock, D. Giblin, E. Witnessed by: Signed by: Class Attorneys 107 Class Mist ory Early in September of 1956, we entered the doors of West as timid sophomores, expecting to find ourselves overladen with work and little chance for play. However, much to our surprise, we found many extracurricular activities available. Our activities for the year opened with a glamorous display of costumes in our water ballet, as the Dolphin Club presented its biennial production based on Waterways of the World.” The big upset of the year came with the Sophomore-Senior Debate; when for the second time in twelve years, the Seniors were overwhelmingly defeated by our outstanding Sophomore debaters. Presented in May, our Sophomore Play, You’re Only Young Once,” was a howling success, and left us all in an effervescent mood. Still in this gay and happy mood, we spent an Evening in Paris, dancing at our Sophomore Hop, held on May 29. After a summer of fun and excitement, we began in eager anticipation to prepare for our Junior year at West; only to find that the opening was delayed by a Teachers' Strike. However, upon returning to school after this postponement, we immediately went to work and elected our class officers. After a tough fight to the finish, Harry' Carr was elected class President, Frederica Germani Vice President, Lea Salvatore Secretary, and John Carney Treasurer. Our Junior Play, Kissin’ Cousins,” was another outstanding success, and we again had to tip our hats to the marvelous Dramatics Society. Football was a big affair this year at West, as we deservingly walked off with the honor of defeating St. Raphael Academy for the first time in sixteen years. Our outstanding player, Paul Anderson, was named to a defensive position on the All-State Team. In May, after a long delay, our class rings finally arrived, bearing a gold torch, the emblem of our own West High. On May 23, our Junior Prom was held. Although our theme was Rhapsody in Blue,” there wasn’t a blue feeling that night. The prom was a tremendous success. After a long summer we arrived back to school, and off to a good start by electing our class officers. Our chosen President was John Carney, Vice President, Lea Salvatore; Secretary, Bernadette Tartaglia; and Treasurer, Stephen Lombardo. With our career in view and our mind on college, a College Night was held in the school auditorium. This was an outstanding event in helping many of us to make the important decisions about the future. Our Senior play, Look Who's Laughing,” certainly made us look who was laughing, for not even the most sour faced person could sit through this play without roaring with delight. Again this year, the boys did a great job in all the sports. Several members of our football team were named to the All-Valley team. Paul Anderson was again named to the All-State Team, in a offensive position. As the old year rang out and the new year rang in, the news of Mr. Shea’s election as the new Superintendent of Schools echoed through the corridors. February found us eagerly awaiting the announcement of the class committees. Along with this came the lead story in the Westerner—the news of the class superlatives. This years Water Pageant brought us the splendor and excitement of the Brussels Worlds Fair. The Rhode Island Honor Society caused a great deal of excitement as many of our Seniors were named members. The Senior Class Party, Class Day, and the Stnior Reception, were the outstanding events which brought to a close our years together at West. As Graduation Day arrived, our hearts were filled with joy for our goal we had attained in earning our diploma. Yet underneath this joy, we were all a little sad—sad as we looked back to our school with all its treasures of joys and laughter locked up in her walls—sad as we left our friends behind in parting to go our own way along the road of life. WE ARE HAPPY TO EXTEND TO WESTERDAYS OUR REALLY SINCERE GOOD WISHES ON THEIR PUBLICATION OF THE WEST HIGH CLASS BOOK. We also hope each member of the Class of 1959 will wrest from the future his share—or more—of success and happiness.
