Dear Class of 1958: We salute the eighteenth class to be graduated from West Senior High School. Your senior year has been the dawn of the Space Age. Satellites, Space Rockets, and planned travel to other planets have become the realized dreams of the scientists. In this age, as in every previous age, it behooves us to keep in mind the dignity of man and his relationship to the Infinite. While great emphasis is presently being given to the role of science in our lives, I would urge you to keep a well-balanced perspective so that we may continue to be a great democracy with strong regard for the individual. I hope that your generation will continue the great American traditions of personal liberty, personal responsibility, and justice for each individual. Your parents and teachers have given you the training and guidance for adult life. We know that you will reflect great credit on your families and school in your future endeavors. The faculty and I extend to all of you a sincere wish for a successful and happy life. Sincerely, Charles E. Shea, Principal After serving in World War I, Mr. Dimlich began teaching in the Pawtucket School System. Since the opening of West High School, seventeen years ago, he has played an important role in developing the minds of many students in each graduating class. Very recently his mathematics club was honored by the National High School and Junior College Mathematics Club. His students admire his superior intelligence in the field of math- ematics and respect him for his sincere devotion to his profession. Therefore, we, the class of 1958, expressing our gratitude in the greatest way we 3 know, hereby dedicate our yearbook to Mr. Herbert C. Dimlich. Class Ode Denise Cathers The earth in its splendor before us arises, Beck'ning us unto her every domain, Kindling our souls with the hope of fulfillment In every success which we drive to attain. As we stand here together, our hearts all united Thinking of joys which we shared in the past. Each day of existence bequeathing us mem'ries We will give time to treasure in the future so vast. We ask that the future will grant us forever Our rights , and our liberties , faith and our hope Giving us reason to fulfill our duty Of using our talents and widening our scope. As we travel on, each in his own separate task. May God give us strength in all our careers, And may He reward our great faith with His guidance To grant us good lives in the following years. 86 Class Will We, the class of nineteen hundred fifty-eight, being of sound body and mind, do hereby declare this to be our last will and testament. To Mr. McCabe: An automatic authorizing machine. To Mr. Kelly: A year's supply of cough drops. To the Juniors: An advisor who will let them wear Bermudas to their Class Party. To the Sophomores: The dignity and poise that only our senior class possessed. To the Cafeteria: Food !!! To the School: An electric eye at each exit. To Future Students: A student parking lot. EDITOR IN CHIEF Barry Alperin ASSISTANT EDITORS Ellen Henshaw, Nancy Souza 87 Class History After a two-week reprieve because of the polio epidemic we came to West, not as wide-eyed sophomores, but as distinguished ninth graders. Our first act as a class was to elect officers: President, Don Grebien; Vice President, Nancy Souza; Treasurer, Jimmy Kinder, Secretary, Sheila Bardsley. President Grebien's most pleasant duty was crowning Nancy Souza Sweetheart of the Sophomore Hop. The antics of Mergelthorpe, imaginary star of Three Misses and a Myth kept our Sophomore Play audience laughing from beginning to end. Before we knew it, June had come and the prospect of summer vacation was in the air. Students were happily discussing vacation, plans. Teachers were smiling. At last vacation began; for nine weeks we relaxed, happy on the outside, but inwardly very anxious to get back to the old grind. In September we returned to West. This time we elected a new slate of officers; one of them, Dave McLaughlin, was elected unanimously to the office of Treasurer. The others were: President, Bill Povey; Secretary, Gail Porter; Vice President, Moe Brennan. Our junior play, Cheaper by the Dozen , had one of the largest casts in the history of the Dramatic Society; middy blouses and knickers are samples of the color- ful costumes, which of course did not outshine the talents of our cast. We'll never forget the transformation of the gym on the night of our Junior Prom. Pastel drapes and sidewalk cafes highlighted what was most beautiful of all - the young ladies, of course! Shortly after the Prom, the big day arrived. Home room teachers passed out final report cards, and at last the dismissal bell tolled our freedom. In September, school was scheduled to start on the 8th, but the opening was de- layed. This time our class was really anxious to return and assume our new role as dignified Seniors. But it was the teachers' turn to revolt. Their strike extended our vacation a little over a week. The teachers were finally reconciled with the school board, and we returned. A few weeks later we set a precedent by being the first West High class to elect a Senior President unanimously. The complete list of officers was: President, John Brandley; Vice President, Beverly Holmes; Secretary, Kathleen Moroney; Treasurer, Richard Feldstein. Our football did what had formerly seemed impossible. Breaking a sixteen-year hex, it defeated Saint Raphael for the first time in the history of our inter-city com- petition. In addition, two senior boys, Len Marks and Don Grebien, were selected for the All-Valley football team. Scenes of the Senior Play ran the gamut from the romantic and dramatic, to the hilarious and lighthearted. On January 22, the Westerner released the well-guarded results of the Superlative polls. The Senior class placed 4 3 members on the Rhode Island Honor Society. The seventeen boys in the group represented an increase of eighteen per cent over the male Honor Society membership last year. Eon Thompson went around the world for eighteen years, and finally landed at West for his Senior year. The current dance craze, the Stroll , was in vogue at the Senior Class Party. Our senior year was capped by the two biggest events: the Senior Prom and a nostalgic graduation.
