Dear Class of 1957, My sincere congratulations to a very fine group of young people on the successful completion of your high school career. You join a very proud group of alumni and alumnae who are bringing great credit to our school. I know that you will face the tests of life with courage and high purpose. Your parents have great faith in you; your teachers have confidence in you; your principal has great hope for you. Let tomorrow be a better day because of you. Sincerely, Charles E. Shea, Principal MISS ELIZABETH L. JENNY To a friend and a teacher ... a woman who has worked faithfully and untiringly in the Mathematics Department during her years at West —to a loyal and outstanding teacher who for more than forty-five years has taught in the Pawtucket schools, not only in the high schools but also in the junior high and the elementary schools, to a willing and helpful teacher devoted unselfishly to instilling the lofty principles of life and learning ... to Miss Elizabeth L. Jenny we, the members of the graduating class, wishing her many happy years of retirement, dedicate this classbook with our deepest gratitude and most sincere appreciation. We walked together through the years Of happy moments, gentle tears; But now we part, to go our ways. Looking back, on treasured days. Each carefree hour that is so dear. Our laugther mingled wtih our fears We pray that each path may be trod Toward our goal with the hand of God. Although we leave these days with sorrow. He’ll give us strength to meet the morrow, Prepare us, Lord, in Your own way, Be with us on our parting day. Bewildered but very excited sophomores, we entered into a new and wonderful life when we came to West High. In that month of September. 1954, with great pleasure we were dubbed the “Class of 1957.” Since it was a new building to many of us, we found ourselves sitting in wrong classrooms or just wandering in the corridors looking for our assigned rooms. At last, as all classes were running on schedule we were invited to join some of the many activities at West. One of these the Radio Club sponsored a Record Hop, the first dance of the year with Ernie Anderson as Master of Ceremonies. In October, 1954, the Press Club, accompanied by the advisor, Mr. McLaughlin, attended a Journalism Conference at U.R.I. Then on Thursday, November 18, we attended our first College Night. For some of us this was an important factor in choosing our life-long career. It was now football season and this meant cheerleaders and twirlers. Next in sports was the baskethall season. We made the quarter-finals of the schoolboy basketball tournament only to be driven back by Gorton who defeated us 65-42. We became very happy Westerners on January 27 and 28, when we received an unexpected two day vacation. The water main burst and left the school without water. The big election of officers came next. Carl Allen was chosen to lead us along with: E. Borenstein, Vice President: J. Johnston, Secretary; Robert Plouff, Treasurer. The melodious voices of the choral group and the vibrant music of the band graced the airways on March 24. The following day the language groups established the Plante Award in memory of Philip D. Plante, once in charge of the language department. Our thoughts now turn to the Sophomore Play, “A Good Egg,” which proved to be a howling success. Our first dance was the “Soph Hop” at which the gym was transformed into a springtime paradise. Summer went by quickly and now we were Juniors. Our class officers this year were: Robert Stephenson, President; Mary Vagnini, Vice President; Madeline Leonard, Secretary; Barry Farrands, Treasurer. With the beginning of this new school year the Philatelist Club was originated with Mr. Dimlich as the advisor. The French Club combined with the Italian Club sponsored the traditional Shamrock Dance with Jim Mendes as M. C. After several successful years as advisor of the Dramatic Society, Miss Marguarite Fox resigned, and Mr. Thomas Hunt Jr. took her place. On May 2, one of our teachers, Miss Claire Emerson, brought honors to our school by winning the much coveted title of “Miss Pawtucket” and later that of “Miss Rhode Island.” We entered our senior year with closely contended elections for class officers. The final results indicated our new president to be Barry Farrands; Vice President, Mary Pawloski; Secretary, Judy Stokes; Treasurer, Richard Parfitt. The math and the Art Service Clubs were newly organized this year. The New York Times was introduced in Mr. Burns’ Problems of Democracy class, the first time a newspaper had been used in class in the Pawtucket school system. Entering West for his senior year was John Zeigler, a native of Zurich, Switzerland. The Westernaires performed at the Pawtucket Country Club and on WJAR-TV. The senior thespians presented “Nice Going” which was our greatest production. The Dolphin Club presented its bi-annual production which was based on the “Waterways of the World.” Our Rhode Island Honor Society held one of the highest percentages ever recorded. Our long awaited Senior Reception had finally arrived and as Shakespeare said, “The hope to joy, is less than hope in joy. Than hope enjoyed.” The Day of days, Graduation, came and all the treasured memories of our past twelve years in school were eternally severed.
