Hrincipal’s Miissaijt! Dear Class of 1952: As you accept your diplomas this year, you will look forward to a life of adventure. Although that life may not hold the adventure of the early pioneer or the explorer, it will hold the adventure of grappling with the problems of everyday living. V our lives will he adventurous if you go forward with courage and faith in your hearts. This year, as for the years since your birth, the world is full of tensions, fears and strife. You will need courage, loyalty and strong spiritual values, if you are to have a successful life. Your teachers and parents have shown you the guideposts for the difficult road ahead. If you have accepted their guidance and if you have been amenable to their teaching, you should have the basic moral training and education to carry you through the problems of life. As you continue to advance in your careers, whether it be in college, business, industry or the armed services, you should recall that the natural moral law imposes upon you the necessity for respect for lawful authority. You have been taught obedience to your parents and teachers. You understand civil authority which is vested in the State by the people for their common welfare. If you have learned these lessons and if you follow the laws of God as given to mankind, our democracy is in safe hands. Your character will be tested many times in the years ahead. If you have an active set of ideals and the fortitude to retain them, you will be successful. I hope that you will have a deep regard for the basic American principle of personal, individual responsibility. You have been taught our system of personal rights, personal duties and personal justices. I am sure that you will contribute to the continuing growth of our great American democracy. May every member of the class of 1952 find the strength and courage to lead a life of clear thinking, honest effort and fearless action. Longfellow tells us in his Psalms of Life Life is real! life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest. Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act that each tomorrow Find us farther than today.” I extend to all of you a most sincere wish for a successful and happy life. I)i!iliotinn Our beloved principal, Mr. Charles E. Shea, has won a place of gratitude, respect, and admiration in our hearts. Since commencing his duties here at West, he has instituted various beneficial programs in our best interest. His experienced and willing advice has continually proved to be of great help and value to all of us. Our class is proud of the outstanding accomplishments which Mr. Shea has attained in the field of education. However, we have chosen him not only upon the basis of these outward merits. Our class (nows Mr. Shea to be a man of integrity and high ideals. An especially warm, perhaps a little sentimental, spot has been reserved in our hearts for him. Since Mr. Shea became principal at West when we were sophomores, ours is the first class to have been under his guidance during the whole three years of senior high. We somehow feel that this fact only makes closer the bond between our principal and ourselves. As an expression of our devotion and appreciation, we, the class of 1952, sincerely dedicate this Year Book to Mr. Charles E. Shea. 3

Secretary UFFICEKS Our class secretary, loan Coyne, is one of the best-liked girls at West. Everyone thinks of Joan as a pal, and Joan thinks as much of them. Hers is a sincere frankness and easy going manner which all her classmates admire. As she graduates, West High wishes her all the tuck in the world in her future career. CLASS President The class of ’52 has been enriched by the personality, the leadership, and the athletic ability of our class president, fohn Batista. Throughout his three years at West, fohn has won many honors both in school and on the football field. To his teachers, his fellow students, to his opponents in athletics, John is always, first and foremost, a gentleman. We feel sure throughout his life these qualities he possesses will continue to win him many friends. Vice-President Lois Cote, our charming class vice-president, has won a spot in the hearts of all Westerners. Her sunny disposition and pleasing smile have cheered many of us on a gloomy day. Everyone knows her as a dependable person who is always ready to lend a helping hand. The class wishes her every success for happiness in the future. Treasurer A capable officer, a boy well-liked in and out of his classroom, is our Treasurer—Robert Almeida. Bob is a very handsome fellow who has reached the height of popularity through his friendly personality. He is also a fast driving football player who was elected class treasurer two times—an honor which he really deserves. 5
