WESTE RDAYS PUBLISHED BY Senior Class OF WEST Senior High School PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND I)i!iliotinn Our beloved principal, Mr. Charles E. Shea, has won a place of gratitude, respect, and admiration in our hearts. Since commencing his duties here at West, he has instituted various beneficial programs in our best interest. His experienced and willing advice has continually proved to be of great help and value to all of us. Our class is proud of the outstanding accomplishments which Mr. Shea has attained in the field of education. However, we have chosen him not only upon the basis of these outward merits. Our class (nows Mr. Shea to be a man of integrity and high ideals. An especially warm, perhaps a little sentimental, spot has been reserved in our hearts for him. Since Mr. Shea became principal at West when we were sophomores, ours is the first class to have been under his guidance during the whole three years of senior high. We somehow feel that this fact only makes closer the bond between our principal and ourselves. As an expression of our devotion and appreciation, we, the class of 1952, sincerely dedicate this Year Book to Mr. Charles E. Shea. 3 Hrincipal’s Miissaijt! Dear Class of 1952: As you accept your diplomas this year, you will look forward to a life of adventure. Although that life may not hold the adventure of the early pioneer or the explorer, it will hold the adventure of grappling with the problems of everyday living. V our lives will he adventurous if you go forward with courage and faith in your hearts. This year, as for the years since your birth, the world is full of tensions, fears and strife. You will need courage, loyalty and strong spiritual values, if you are to have a successful life. Your teachers and parents have shown you the guideposts for the difficult road ahead. If you have accepted their guidance and if you have been amenable to their teaching, you should have the basic moral training and education to carry you through the problems of life. As you continue to advance in your careers, whether it be in college, business, industry or the armed services, you should recall that the natural moral law imposes upon you the necessity for respect for lawful authority. You have been taught obedience to your parents and teachers. You understand civil authority which is vested in the State by the people for their common welfare. If you have learned these lessons and if you follow the laws of God as given to mankind, our democracy is in safe hands. Your character will be tested many times in the years ahead. If you have an active set of ideals and the fortitude to retain them, you will be successful. I hope that you will have a deep regard for the basic American principle of personal, individual responsibility. You have been taught our system of personal rights, personal duties and personal justices. I am sure that you will contribute to the continuing growth of our great American democracy. May every member of the class of 1952 find the strength and courage to lead a life of clear thinking, honest effort and fearless action. Longfellow tells us in his Psalms of Life Life is real! life is earnest! And the grave is not its goal; Dust thou art, to dust returnest. Was not spoken of the soul. Not enjoyment, and not sorrow, Is our destined end or way; But to act that each tomorrow Find us farther than today.” I extend to all of you a most sincere wish for a successful and happy life. Congratulations to each of you upon your graduation from West High School. CHARLES E. SHEA, Principal Secretary UFFICEKS Our class secretary, loan Coyne, is one of the best-liked girls at West. Everyone thinks of Joan as a pal, and Joan thinks as much of them. Hers is a sincere frankness and easy going manner which all her classmates admire. As she graduates, West High wishes her all the tuck in the world in her future career. CLASS President The class of ’52 has been enriched by the personality, the leadership, and the athletic ability of our class president, fohn Batista. Throughout his three years at West, fohn has won many honors both in school and on the football field. To his teachers, his fellow students, to his opponents in athletics, John is always, first and foremost, a gentleman. We feel sure throughout his life these qualities he possesses will continue to win him many friends. Vice-President Lois Cote, our charming class vice-president, has won a spot in the hearts of all Westerners. Her sunny disposition and pleasing smile have cheered many of us on a gloomy day. Everyone knows her as a dependable person who is always ready to lend a helping hand. The class wishes her every success for happiness in the future. Treasurer A capable officer, a boy well-liked in and out of his classroom, is our Treasurer—Robert Almeida. Bob is a very handsome fellow who has reached the height of popularity through his friendly personality. He is also a fast driving football player who was elected class treasurer two times—an honor which he really deserves. 5 Name: WALTER ADAMOWICZ Nickname: Walt Future Intentions: Chemist Activities: Football (1, 2, 3); Press Club; Junior Prom Committee; Sophomore Hop Committee; Class Book Board; Cap and Gown Committee Name: PATRICIA DIANE ALLAN Nickname: Pat Future Intentions: Nursing Activities: Leaders Corps (2, 3); Basketball (I, 2, 3, Captain 1, Co-Captain 2); Volleyball (1, 2, 3, Co-Captain 1, Captain 2); Badminton (1, 2, 3); Referee (2, 3); Track (1, 2, 3); Tennis (1); Dramatic Society (1, 2, 3); Sophomore Hop Committee; Life Saving (1); French Club (2, 3); Mixed Chorus (1, 2); Dolphin Club (2, 3); Girls’ Glee Club (2, 3); Junior Prom Committee; Press Club (3); Sophomore Class Secretary; A.A.A. The Classhonk Board In the Fall, a group of students were chosen to head the various departments which are a prerequisite in composing a classhook. Those selected for general excellence in their particular fields were: Walter Pritchard, Editor-in-Chief; Merilyn Tucker, Associate Editor: Elizabeth Lake, Literary Editor; Miriam Flamer, Business Manager; John Batista, Art Editor; and Clara Jennings, Executive Secretary. The classhook board has worked very hard to compile this record of the class as a whole. The book shows the activities, the fun, and the happenings that have gone into our three active years at West. It reflects, we hope, something of the spirit of endeavor and success with which our busy school-days have been filled. Of course, the classhook board could have accomplished nothing without the assistance and complete co-operation of our advisors, Miss Mary C. McKeough and Mr. Thomas J. Hunt. We owe them our sincere thanks and the gratitude for helping us to make our classhook, one of the highest calibre. From assiduous and untiring effort, has emerged this achievement our classhook, the ultimate aim of our endeavor, of which we arc justly proud. We sincerely hope that you will enjoy perusing this, as much as we did editing it. 54 Merilyn Tucker, '52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Pauline Burns, Ruth Seagal, Claire Rattey, Miriam Flamer, Constance Pessoa, Anne DeCiantis, Dorothy Freitas, Nancy Bobel, Paula Brennan, Pattic Ann Benn. Tim lllmili: Islaml Hmiur Niir.mly The purpose of the Rhode Island Honor Society is to reward those students who have maintained an average of eighty-five percent or above for their three years of high school. Membership in this society aids the student in securing employment and in gaining acceptance at colleges or universities. Each April the Parent Teacher Association of West-Sayles acknowledges the new members of the Society in an assembly before the Senior High School. Each studtnt receives a certificate and a small gold pin as a symbol of his membership. Immediately following the assembly, the honored students, their parents, and their teachers, are guests of the Student Council at the Honors Day Tea. Thus ends one of the most important days of the school year. This year forty-four new names have been added to the list of West High members. We congratulate these students and encourage them to maintain these high standards throughout their lives. 56 Paula M. Brennan, '52 FIRST ROW: Lett Bo Right—Shall Welsh. Natalie .Wnde. A Student Council Happy, and with the satisfaction that goes hand in hand with happiness, arc the senior members of the West Student Council. The inner jot that comes from the thought of a good job well done- is planted in the minds of the council members who must say farewell to the classrooms and surroundings of West High. The follow ing were elected as othcers for 1951-52: Eugene Thomsen. President: Pauline Burns. Vice President: Panic Anne Bonn. Recording Secretary: Natalie Andrade. Corresponding Secretary: 2nd John Batista. Treasurer. This year, as usual, the Council rounded out a fully packed schedule of activities. The first of these w as the sale of flush colored shoe laces. On December 16th. the Council presented “The Spirit of Christmas.- a huge success marking the first social event. It was on February 15 h that the Student Council sponsored the very colorful and successful Valentine Dance. Various privileges were extended to Student Council members such as selling ice cream at home baskcthall games and ushering on Career Day. A highlight of the year was the Annual May Frolic where West's populace saw the crowning of their elected May Queen. Another of the big social events was the Honor Society Tea. The time of the year was had by members of die Student Council on their Spring outing. Parents night also turned out to be quite a big and successful adair. Yes. the 1951-52 Student Council certainly had their share of work, but the tun had in doing it made the iob more than interesting. And so. to Miss Cullen, our very able advisor, we. the Seniors of the Student Council, want to extend our warmest and most heartfelt thanks. Miss Cullen worked untiringly so that we might have die outstanding organization we have. Curtain call!” Now was our chance to be in the limelight! Now we could perform in front of our upperclassmen. The big moment had come at last! With it came the accustomed stage fright. Putting on a bold front we showed the results of our strenuous rehearsals for the sophomore play, “Going On Seventeen.” “Lights! Action! Stage!” Our junior play was underway. Now we were experienced. No longer “greenhorns.” We could display our best talent in the comedv, “We Shook the Family Tree.” “Vesti La Giubba!” Hearts saddened at the thought of our final class performance. Proud we were, however, of our chance to stage our senior play, “Dear Ruth.” As a special bonus, of course, we had the three one-act plays held in the spring. Here the dramatists of 52 had an extra chance. We will never forget “Good Medicine,” “Facing the Future,” and “The Mystery of the Silver Backed Hairbrush,” for this was our last “curtain call” on the West High stage. 58 Patricia Smith, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Frederick Daley, Clara Jennings, David Hessenthaler, Natalie Andrade, Faith Donnelly, Ruth Scagcl, Beverly Gornyak, Ruth Baxter. An annual trip to Boston and an assembly highlighted the year’s activities of the West High Radio and Television Club. The club, under the direction of Miss Henrietta Brazeau, director of Radio in the Pawtucket schools, toured Boston Radio and TV stations and schools on its annual trip, April 15. The trip included a tour of the Leland Powers school of radio, student radio station of Boston University and WBZ-TV. At WBZ the club toured the station and later saw an actual TV broadcast. The assembly consisted of the presentation of two radio scripts and several musical numbers. The scripts were done in regular radio style, including sound effects. A dance, sponsored by the club, was held on March 21. Music at the dance was recorded and was played by a member of a local radio station. Musical talent was also a feature of the dance. At the award day assembly the top student broadcaster of the year was presented an award. 59 John Worsley, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Barbara Theberge, Lois Rainey, Marjory Richardson, Paul Murphy, Pauline Burns, Joseph Hagan, Barbara Campbell. At the beginning of this school year, Mr. Michael J. McLoughlin, who had been the Westerner and Press Club Adviser for several years, was granted a year’s leave of absence to assume an important position with the Rhode Island branch of the Fair Employment Practices Commission. The task of guiding the members of the Westerner staff was taken over by Mr. Lionel R. Ferland and Mr. Thomas Woodcock, literary and technical advisers, respectively. Due to the aforementioned high cost of publishing a school paper, the Westerner was forced to cut the size of the paper. This new, smaller size publication contained more actual newsprint than previous years’ issues and proved to be popular with all those who realized that with- out a cut in expenses the paper would he unable to continue publishing. The Westerner staff this year consisted of Pauline Burns and Paul Murphy, who were co-editors-in Chief, and Paula Brennan and Eugene Thomsen, who were assistant co-editors. Other members of this year’s staff were: Advertising Managers—Barbara Campbell, Leonard Dwares; Business Managers—Marjorie Richardson, Lois Rainey; Exchange Editors—Jay Giuttari, David Green; Feature Editors—Fred Daley, John Worsley; Art Editors—Jacqueline Baldwin, Joseph Hagan; Managing Editors—Patricia Smith, Richard Brassard; Sports Editors—John Turner, Joan Coyne; Circulation Managers— Doris Blais, Leo Quinn; Photography Editors— Barbara Theberge, Richard Coia; Activitiy Directors—Dorothy Enos, Paul Barum; Reporters —Peter Kanelakos, Chester O’Neill, Lawrence Calabro, John Hunt, David Handrigan, Beverly Whatmough, Raymond Noelte, Sally Holgate. 60 Paul Murphy, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Marcia MacManus, Joseph Giuttari. Tlii! llHliatini] Sm.iiilv The West High Debating Society, guided by the diligent efforts of Miss Vivienne Cote, has completed a highly successful season. A full schedule of debate and model congress activities have resulted in a busy and well rounded program for the year. In addition to the intramural discussions, our members have displayed excellent ability in their debates with other schools. This was exemplified by our team’s scoring a tie with Saint Raphael's and by breaking even with out potent rivals. Rogers High. The officers elected this year were: Walter Pritchard, President: Merilyn Tucker, Secretary: Leonard Dwares, Treasurer; and Pattie Anne Benn, Student Council Representative. Being traditionally social minded, the Debating Society could not let the year slip by without holding an all school affair. Along with the French Club they therefore jointly sponsored a Valentine dance and a novel variety show. Each was a great success. At the close of the school year, the sophomore members are, as yet, undefeated. The seniors, therefore, wish them this same distinction in the succeeding years and hope that the members to come shall uphold the honor and worthy name which the West High Debating Society has constantly known. 61 Joseph Giuttari, '52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Marcia MacManus, Pattie Anne Benn, Miriam Flamer, Constance Pcssoa, Walter Pritchard, Jacqueline Baldwin, David Bowes, Patricia Allan, Carolyn Hawkins. Tniijimrs llnis The French Club, with the understanding guidance of Miss Vivienne F. Cote, experienced a highly successful year. The capable officers for the year 1951-52 were: President, Walter Pritchard; Vice-President, Jacqueline Baldwin; Secretary, Constance Pcssoa; and Treasurer. David Bowes. In September, Toujours Unis began the social season with their traditional Fall Dance. Everyone who attended this affair was thoroughly satisfied with an evening well-spent. This event was marked off the calendar as a tremendous success. At Christmas, the French Club conducted its annual Christmas party. On this occasion, gifts were exchanged, French games were played, and a good time was enjoyed by all. In April, the members of the French Club were again ready to lend a hand. The idea of the Sjiring Show, jointly sponsored by Toujours and the Debating Society, was first formulated last year. This was such a pleasurable event that it was continued again this year. The graduating members of the French Club would like to thank Miss Cote for her wholehearted co-operation with us and for making this a memorable year. We also wish the best of luck in the future to the new members of Toujours Unis. 62 Merilyn Tucker, ’52 Left to Right—Richard Heretta, William O’Neill, Roger Lepine, Stanley Rurg. Amlin- isunl Eiliirulion During the 1951-1952 season, the audio-visual education club served the school both satisfactorily and efficiently. The club was directed by Mr. Thomas B. Woodcock who previously served as visual education director at Slater Jr. High. An audio-visual club member is taught to run 16 man. sound portable projectors and also the professional 16 m.m sound arc-light pro- jector in the projection booth at the rear of the auditorium. Even though there was a lack of senior high members, the club carried on with the aid of the junior high school. The club served as a training ground for the younger junior high school members so that they may be better qualified to run the equipment when they reach the senior high school level. 63 Stanley Birg, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—John Worsley, Joseph Hagan, Walter Pritchard, Leonard Dwares. Juniur Huturians Each year the Pawtucket Rotary Club allows the principals of the various Pawtucket high schools to designate six young men to attend regular luncheon meetings of Rotary. These young men are chosen for their qualities of leadership, sportsmanship, and fellowship. This year’s Junior Rotarians are: Walter L. Pritchard, Jr., Joseph H. Hagan, Jr., John Worsley, Leonard S. Dwares, and John Batista. They looked forward to their Thursday afternoon visits at the Rotary Club with a great deal of anticipation. They heard many different speakers talk on subjects of interest in various lines of work. They met men from every walk of life; engineers, textile manufacturers, lawyers, doctors, lumbermen and many others. They had the opportunity of talking with these men, enjoying their fellowship and making new and valuable friends. They were assisted by Mr. Tyrone Davies, a member of the Rotary Club, who was always most friendly and cordial to them. At the last meeting the Rotarians gave their “swan song.” They said that the greatest thing that anyone can learn from Rotary is the fact that men from everv field of endeavor, every nationality, and every religion can join together and enjoy the sociability, comradship and experience of the fellow Rotarians. With that the Junior Rotarians returned to the everyday task of school, minus their Thursday excursions but wiser from the experience of them. 64 Joseph H. Model Legislature House will be in order!” With these words Joe Hagan serving for the second time as Speaker, convened the House of Representatives of the Model Legislature. Joe is the first student ever to be honored by receiving two appointments to the Speakership which is undoubtedly the most difficult of presiding offices in the Model Legislature. With the poise of a veteran and the manner of a professional, Joe performed his duties admirably. West was honored with two other important positions. Louise Hassan served as Reading Clerk in the House and Daniel Alves as chairman of the House Finance Committee. Also in the House were Pauline Burns, William O'Neill, Claire Hokenson, and Walter Pritchard. Miriam Flamer was in the Senate. On March 28 a banquet was held at the Lindsey Tavern for past and present West Model Legislators. Father Burchamp of Providence College was the principal speaker and he gave an excellent talk on “Television and History.” We who represented West in the 1952 Model Legislature would like to give special thanks to Mr. G. Russell Burns, head of the History Department here at West, for the patient and thorough way in which he prepared and advised us. We would also like to urge the students of West to maintain an active interest in this most valuable instruction in the workings of our government. 65 Walter L. Pritchard, Jr., '52 Left to Right—Miriam Flamer, Walter Pritchard, Merilyn Tucker. ❖ Model Congress The fourteenth Rhode Island High School Model Congress was held on March 1, 1952, at the University of Rhode Island. This year, four seniors, all members of the West High Debating Society, served in the Congress: Walter Pritchard and Merilyn Tucker as senators, Joseph Hagan and Miriam Flamer as representatives. The delegates from West High sponsored the following bill: Resolved, that all prosecutions of federal and politically appointed government employees indicted by the grand jury be ordered directly by the President of the United States, and that the Attorney-General act in an advisory capacity. Walter Pritchard, speaking in the Senate, received a medal on the basis of his debating, and of his message, and the standard of his work at the Congress. Joseph Hagan was cited for an honorable mention for his work in the House. Again this year West High had contestants in the original oratory and the extempore speaking contests which are held on the same day as the Congress. Joseph Blanco and Louise Hassan entered the original speech contest, while Charlotte Feital and Robert Nardolillo were contestants in the extempore speaking contest. 66 Left to Right—Barbara Campbell, Anne DeCiantis, Forest St. Pierre, Brenda Welch, William Zonfrillo, Pattie Anne Bcnn, Gill I)c|esus, Joyce Lander, Eleanor Anderson, Anna Johnston, Patricia Huettel, Betty Doyle, George Bridgido, Betty Ridings, Vilma DiCenzo, Judith Anderson, Elinor Borcnstcin, Barbara McCormick, Raymond Steele. • « Orchestra Again, as in previous years, the West High School orchestra has delighted us with their music. The orchestra is under the capable direction of Miss Marion F. O’Brien. William Zonfrillo is concert master and Anna Johnston is head second violinist. The orchestra has performed for us on such occasions as Music Week and at the Christmas Assembly. The orchestra meets and practices during school hours as the Instrumental Music Class. It also meets before school on Thursdays and Fridays at 8:15. Despite the lack of time. Miss O'Brien does a wonderful job of getting the group prepared for these assemblies. 67 Margaret Withers, '52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Stanley Burg, Martin Flamer, Loretta Lynch, June Pickover, Harriet Levin. For twelve years Mr. Gray has given his patience and effort, coupled with his knowledge and experience to produce bands which West High School could be justly proud of. This year the band members played at nearly every football game; a few even won top honors as soloists in the annual music festival. Now the band is under the able direction of Joseph Conti, who, we feel, will be just as capable of keeping up the standards set by Mr. Gray. With the added members of this year’s Savles Junior High School Band, there are bright promises of having another fine and praiseworthy band at West High next year. 68 Stanley Burg, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Lois Hanscomb, Lois Cote, Irene Minor, Patricia Allan, Joan Coyne, Barbara Campbell, Ann DeCiantis, Claire Rattey, Audrey Card, Pattie Anne Benn, Priscilla Johnson, Joan Martin. West Hii|li Girls’ I'.lmral Grnup With the termination of the school year the Girls’ Glee Club completed another successful season. This success was due to the competent and skillful guidance of Miss Marian O'Hrien, the club’s director. Unlike most school clubs, the Glee Club does not meet after school hours. Instead, it is broken up into five groups called chorus singing classes which meet during school hours one day a week. However, when preparing for a special event these five groups meet together before school Wednesday mornings. The opening of school in September marked the immediate preparation of the chorus singing classes for the annual Christmas presentation. However, the Wednesday morning rehearsals of the entire club did not begin until the month of November. With the passing of the Yuletide season began the rehearsals for the Music Week Assembly and the State Music Festival which was held at Hope High School during the first week of May. This impressive festival, under the direction of Mr. Lura Haggurd, director of Fred Waring Chorus in New York, comprised all the Glee Clubs in the state. Our last and best remembered appearance was at the graduation excercises on June 19. 69 Priscilla Johnson, 52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Barbara Campbell, Anne DeCiantis, David Hessenthaler, Joseph Blanco, Myron Moody, Richard Beretta, Robert Nardolillo, Donald Lambert, Francis Lamarre. Male Chorus West Senior High has again produced a Boy’s Glee Club worthy of repute. Although somewhat handicapped at the beginning by the loss of Mr. Garland, the club enjoyed a sucessful year under the fine direction of Mr. Joseph Conte, a newcomer to the music department of Pawtucket. Mr. Garland’s sudden illness came as a severe blow, for he had been the club’s only director in its entire history. This unfortunate happening caused the club to become inactive for several weeks until shortly before Christmas. At that time we were requested to sing at “The Spirit of Christmas,” an annual production sponsored by the Student Council. Mr. Conte prepared us for this event remarkably well. Much credit is due to him for reorganizing, rehearsing, and directing our group of relatively untrained voices—his efforts enabled us to perform not only at Christmas, but during Music Week as well. In addition, the club participated in the Spring Festival held at Hope High. We are also deeply indebted to our talented accompanist, Anne DeCiantis, for bearing with us throughout those hectic rehearsals in order that our per- formances might be marked with the quality of perfection. Although Mr. Conte readily acquired the respect and admiration of the boys, Mr. Garland could not be forgotten. Plans were made, and songs rehearsed in order to senenade him at his home. Because of his serious condition, however, his doctor advised that this was impractical. The boys were disappointed but not discouraged. Each member contributed to the purchase of a pair of bookends, which were sent to Mr. Garland as a remembrance of the Boy’s Glee Club with which he spent so many happy years. The noteworthy reputation and success attained by this organization were due to the willing co-operation of everyone, from the director down to the page turner. The fond memories of singing side by side in the Boys’ Glee Club shall always remain with us. We feel sure that the future members will experience this same satisfaction and pleasure derived from the generous interests of such able leaders as Mr. Garland and Mr. Conte. 70 Pete Peterson, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Dorothy Enos, Barbara Campbell, Merilyn Tucker, Audrey Card SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Sarah Holgate, Joan Sabourin, Pauline Byrnes, Otilia Gomes Stiiiii|is anil Bnmls West High, noted not only for its scholastic achievements hut also for its patriotic services, participated again this year in the sale of stamps and bonds. This idea, which originated during the war years, has continued to be a success since then. The purpose of the Stamp and Bond Committee which is comprised of homeroom representatives, is to promote the sales in the school. These agents obtain their purchases from Miss O’Reilly and distribute them to those who bought them. Miss O'Reilly, the capable leader of the committee, has put in much time and effort to make the program a success. This year she was assisted by Merilyn Tucker, who was responsible for keeping the records. Shirley Farrington and Elaine Higginbottom were appointed heads of the sophomore and junior homerooms respectively. We hope that this sale of stamps and bonds, so vital both in peace and war, will continue to be as successful as it has been during the past two years. 71 Barbara Campbell, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Norman Laliberte, Eugene Thomsen, William Kollet. The club carried on under the leadership of Fred Daley, Vice-President; William J. O'Neill, Treasurer; William Kollet, Secretary; and Eugene Thomsen, Chaplain. The new members were initiated September 12, and the club had a busy year from then on. It was host to Sgt. March of the United States Air Force, who extolled the virtues of his branch of the service. We at West are sure that these members will succeed in their ambitions, and our best wishes go with them in all their pursuits. 72 Thomas Walker, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Nancy Carson, Nancy Connly, Jacqueline Baldwin, Barbara Torrance, Natalie Andrade, Pauline Burns, Lois Cote, Joan Bartleson, Barbara Campbell. V Tri-Hi-Y TRI—standing for the three-fold purpose of the Y.M.C.A. HI—exemplified by high school girls Y—affiliated with the Y.M.C.A. During its six years of existence at West High, Tri-Hi-Y has been a meaningful experience in friendship, helpfulness, and personality development to everyone in the club. This year the girls in the organization worked faithfully to create the most active program that Tri-Hi-Y has had yet. For the first time, the West Tri-Hi-Y sent two representatives to the National Hi-Y Congress held in Cleveland, Ohio. West was also represented at every council, cabinet and conference gathering during the year. The officers heading the club in 1951-1952 are: Pauline Burns, President; Katherine Holmes, Vice President; Natalie Andrade, Secretary; Joan Baftelson, Treasurer; Lois Cote, Chaplain. Our loyal and faithful advisor is Miss Rosa J. Minkins. During the year the cluh heard many outstanding speakers in the community, helped organize the first all-city Hi-Y chorus, and for the first time went on a week-end trip to Packard Manse in Stoughton, Massachusetts for a mid-winter retreat. For its service project, Tri-Hi-Y has donated money toward the new cheerleading uniforms which next year’s cheerleaders will be wearing. They also enlarged their hook donation to the school library. Highlighting the year's social activities was our annual Christmas Formal, held at the Churchill House on December the twenty-sixth. We, the outgoing seniors, have not set this year as an example of complete satisfaction, but as one of dedication to all our Tri-Hi-Y sisters with our sincere wishes for even greater things in the future. 73 Pauline Burns, ’52 74 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Pattie Anne Bcnn, Natalie Andrade, Patricia Allan, Norma Lamoureux, Pauline Burns, Merilyn Tucker. One of the most outstanding all-girl organizations at West. The purpose of this club is to assist in class work in the gym and to referee extra-curricular volleyball, basketball, and badminton. To become a leader, a girl must be both an honor student and a skilled athlete. A leader, who is chosen in her sophomore year, has the privilege of retaining that position until graduation. The West Leaders Corps is under the capable leadership of Miss Electra Fogliano. who has continued to make this organization the active and respected club it is today. Shortly before graduation, the club holds its annual banquet, which marks the close of the happiest years spent in the West High gym. As we leave West High and the Leaders Corps, we hope that the leaders to follow will have as much fun and accomplish as much as the leaders of ’52! 75 Pattie Anne Benn, '52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Louise LaFrancois, Pauline Andrade. Our head cheerleader, Pauline Burns, has certainly done a marvelous job in training us to do our best at every game. Under her able leadership, we have learned to keep cheering and smiling at all times, even though our team was lagging behind. We are especially grateful to Miss Fogliano for the tremendous help and advice given us throughout the years. Without her capable guidance, we would have found ouselves at a complete loss, especially when it was time for a pep assembly. Miss Fogliano is definitely the cheerleaders’ best friend. To the junior and sophomore cheerleaders, we wish the best of everything and hope that you will always remember us. 76 Natalie Andrade, ’52 Left to Right—Audrey McLaughlin, Nancy Carson, Patricia Forss, Audrey Pardington, Nancy Connly, Jacqueline Baldwin, Sheila Welsh. Twirlers The twirlers of West High suffered an unsuccessful season this year. This was certainly not through lack of practice. Every day after school the girls went through their routine. Although they did not twirl in many games, they did their best in the games in which they did twirl. Next year they hope for a better season, and they should be better than ever. Each season twenty-five girls try out; from them about four are chosen in the finals. It takes much time and practice to prepare these girls. They come down every night to go through the routines. After they are chosen their next task is to learn how to strut, and it isn’t an easy one. I hope next year will be a better year for the twirlers. They have worked hard and really deserve it. 77 Sheila Welsh, '52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Shirley Foley, Nancy Bobel, Lois Cote, Marylou Berry, Pattie Anne Benn, Patricia Allan, (acolyn Bidwell, Shirley Brooks, Dorothy Hayden, Pauline Burns. Dnliihin T.luli The Dolphin Cluh is open to all girls regardless of their skill or experience. The only qualification needed to become a member of this club is the ability to swim. Every Tuesday night the Dolphin Club meets promptly at two-thirty. At this time the girls are taught how to swim together in rhythm. Slowly and gracefully they develop such strokes as the crawl, the backstroke and the breast stroke. Stunts, diving, and figure formations are another phase of the club’s work. This pleasurable routine enables a girl to become completely relaxed in the water, and usually helps her to lose all traces of water fright which may have developed in previous years. Our sincere gratitude and appreciation is expressed to Miss Electra Fogliano who has enabled the girls in the Dolphin Club to enjoy another very successful year. 78 Marylou Berry, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Dorothy Enos, Marylou Berry, |anet O'Brien, Nancy Bobel. SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Pattic Anne Benn, Patricia Allan, Miriam Flamer, Pauline Burns, Lois Cote, Barbara Campbell. Girls’ hiiskKlIiiill The girls at West have always taken an interest in sports. They have formed teams and one night a week after school compete against one another for the league championship. This year the Charlestonettes, a team comprised of seven girls, went on their way to victory by winning every game they played. Janet O’Brien is captain and Marylou Berry co-captain of the team. Other members on the team are Pattie Benn, Nancy Bobel, Pauline Burns, Pat Allan, Lois Cote, Miriam Flamer, Dorothy Enos, and Barbara Campbell. Other teams in the league were the Hillbilly Blues, The Seniorettes, Sharpshooters, and Shooting Stars. We who graduate this year hope that interest in athletics and good sportsmanship will continue to exist at West as long as the school is alive with sports-loving students. 79 Eleanor C. These were typical of the commands being shouted by the co-captains of the junior and senior volleyball teams which met every Tuesday in the gym. The tournament was under the direction of Miss Fogliano and Miss Moreau. The volleyball champions this year were the “Charlestonettes,” who succeeded in winning a striking victory over their sophomore rivals, the “Volley Blues.” The capable and untiring co-captains of the “Charlestonettes” were Dorothy Carpenter and Janet O'Brien. In the past, the girls at West have always considered volleyball as being the “tops” in after school sports. The Class of ’52 hopes that the future Westerners will keep up this spirit. 80 Clara Jennings, ’52 Left to Right—Pattic Anne Benn, Merilyn Tucker, Marylou Berry, Rutli Baxter, Louise Hassan. Badminton This spring, badminton, a very popular game in th is school, came into its own again. Starting around the beginning of March, the badminton season continues until the middle of April, when the playoffs take place. It is indicative of the popularity of the sport here at West that the courts were seemingly never deserted. All in all, one hundred and thirteen girls tried for the championships, sophomores, juniors and seniors competing. In order to obtain his points, though, one must reach the quarter finals. By process of elimination, both singles and doubles cham- pionships are decided, winners taking two out of three games. This year’s champions were: Singles—Merilyn Tucker; Doubles—Merilyn Tucker and Pattie Anne Benn. Merilyn Tucker, one of the outstanding representatives in Rhode Island of the game, and a Senior at West, now has her sights on the National Junior Championship. I hope that in future years, badminton will continue to be a leading sport among the students of West. 81 Shirley Flynn, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—John Turner, Leo Quinn, Walter Adamowicz, Larry Calabro, John Batista, Peter Kanelakos, David Handrigan, Boh Almeida SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Assistant Coach Tilo Margarita, Manager McKeon, Francis St. Pierre, Andrew Boyle, Richard Coia, Louis Mello, Chester O'Neil, Elmore Matteson, Rodney Scott, Coach Win Dodge. Footlmll The West Senior High School football team, coached by Mr. Winston Dodge and Mr. Tilo Margarita, completed the best season West has had in five years. Although the team lost their first game to East High by 13-6, they bounced back and defeated Mount Saint Charles 8-0. Instrumental in this victory were Robert Almeida and David Handrigan. The next game with the league champions, West Warwick, saw West trailing in the first half by 26 points. When West came onto the field for the second half, the team sparked by Leo Quinn and Larry Calabro held West Warwick to 7 points. On the following Saturday, West was defeated by Aldrich 15-13. John Hunt sparked in the DeLaSalle game by making a run back of a kick-off 90 yards for a touchdown; this was only one indication of Hunt’s abilities. West, however, dropped this game 19-13 to a more experienced DeLaSalle team. When West went into their next game, they saw a cocky, undefeated Gorton team. John Batista was injured in this game after playing all but five minutes of spectacular football. Nevertheless, West defeated Gorton 25-20, with John Hunt taking all the scoring honors. West High invaded Westerly for their next game and defeated them 20-12, thanks to Rod Scott’s scoring two touchdowns in the last two minutes of play. Paced by Jack Turner. Richard Coia, and Elmore Matteson, West defeated Classical High by a wide margin of 33-14. In West’s biggest game of the year, they defeated Woonsocket High 14-13. West’s valuable gun in that game was Pete Kanelakos, whose backing up the line helped to stop a good Woonsocket team, thereby tying them for third place in the State Class B league’s final standing. Incidentally, this is the highest position occupied by a West High football team since the league’s inception. The team hopes that the succeeding members of the football squad will maintain the respectable position so faithfully won for the honor and glory of West High. 82 Walter Adamowicz, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Andrew Boyle, Kenneth Isherwood, Joseph Guittari, Leo Quinn, Richard Brassard, Gordon Holmes, Robert Bickering. SECOND ROW: Left to Right—George Brigido, George Cartwright, Donald Salisbury, Kenneth Jackson, Joseph McKcchnic, Norman Cartwright, William Rutledge. Basketliall Although the 1951-52 basketball season at West High wasn’t fruitful as far as victories were concerned, many of the players gained valuable experience for future seasons. The team dropped sixteen of twenty-two season games, including eight of twelve league games. Probably the team’s best performance of the year came in the closing game of the season when it had East worried late in the third quarter. The Rangers, playing its best game as a team all year, held a 26-22 lead at half-time. The second half saw some great ball playing. However, with little reserve strength at the time on the West bench to replace the tiring regulars, the Rangers dropped a 65-48 decision. At the outset of the year it appeared that the team was in for a good season, winning three of four exhibition games. The Rangers then opened the season with wins over Mt. St. Charles and strong East Providence. The Rangers dropped its third league game to De LaSalle, but bounced back into the win column the following game with a win over Woonsocket. Then as the season neared the halfway mark the Rangers went into a slump, winning only one of its next thirteen games. As for the future. Coach William Rutledge and the Rangers should have some good years. Eight players on ’52 team, who have gained some valuable experience, are holdovers for next year’s team. 83 John Worsley, ’52 FIRST ROW: Ixft to Right—William Murray, William Ward, Donald Enos, Robert Plourde, Helfrid Peterson, Donald Cameron, August St. Pierre. SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Perry Quimby, Raymond Critchlow, Harris Levin, Robert Macbeth, Theodore Green, Thomas Holgatc, Robert Hayden, Rodney Scott. Swiiiiiiiinij Team The West High Swim team under the able direction of Coach Perry E. Quimby concluded a very successful season, considering the extremely keen competition. W'est got off with a bang as they trounced Gardener High of Massachusetts by an astounding score of 5054-3654. This victory marked West’s first defeat of Gardner. Next, the high spirited team travelled to Newport There they finished on the short end of a 30-45 score as a strong St. George’s team splashed their way through an exciting meet. This year, as always, F ast High returned to action with a well-rounded team of powerful swimmers. Their talent, however, exceeded that of West by only 13 points. Although these well-fought defeats caused the team a little disappointment, its spirit was not entirely broken, for West came back to whip Moses Brou n by a 44-31 score. The team was then scheduled to meet the Brown Freshmen. As the meet was cancelled, however, West moved on to outdo St. Raphael’s in an exciting meet which was not decided until the final freestyle relay event in which St. Ray’s was nosed out by 9 points. The following four meets were fought in vain. In the return meet with East, West was again dunked by a score of 29-46. On an open date, the team travelled to Olneyvillc where it was defeated by the Boys’ Club of that town by a 35-40 margin. The team again boarded the bus for the trip to Franklin, Massachusetts, where the boys were made the victim of a 2854-461 defeat. St. Ray’s proved to lie the better of West in the second meeting at the Boys’ Club pool. St. Ray’s medley relay team edged out that of West by a few strokes in order to clinch the meet. Although West could boast of only three wins this year, the team gained much in experience which will lie of invaluable importance in years to come. Because the team loses only four seniors as a result of graduation, Mr. Quimby looks forward to at least two more seasons of success. As seniors, we hope that the members of next year’s team will give Mr. Quimby the support he needs in order to raise a well-conditioned team. 84 Helfrid Peterson, ’52 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Robert Nardolillo, Elmore Matteson, Douglas Sherburne, Lawrence Calabro, Philip Desrochtrs. Under the able coaching of Mr. Norbert Donnelly, this year’s team should perform well in the Class B competition. There is a promising turnout of sophomores and juniors which should mean a very strong team in the near future. Two outstanding veterans who are returning for another campaign are Jack Turner and Dick Brassard. Jack, a dashman, did very well in winter track, being named to the first team All Class B in the forty yard dash. Dick, on his past performance, is expected to shine in the distance events such as the mile and half mile. All in all the picture is a promising one, and we are confident that we will have reason to be proud of this team. Walter L. Daseliiill The West Senior High School baseball team, with a squad almost evenly divided between veterans and rookies, appears to be one of the most improved teams in the Class B League. The Rangers won their initial contest of the year defeating a strong Moses Brown aggregation by the score of 4 to 1. The West team was unsuccessful in its second contest, being blanked by Vocational School 5 to 0. Coach William Rutledge is again leading the squad. The members of this year’s team are pitchers, Donald Salisbury, Robert Macbeth, Harry Brady, Ronald Scott; catchers, Ronald Rasmussen, Alfred Vadnais; first base, Miles Pawloski, Eugene Brickach; second base, John Tretton, Kenneth Jackson; third base, John Hunt; shortstop, Gordon Holmes; fielders, Joseph McKechnie, Frederick Daley, William Kollet, Peter McKeown, Gordon Annon. 86 Paul Murphy, ’52 Left to Right—Norman Sidel. Martin Flamer, August St. Pierre, Arnold Sidel. Tennis Tennis was reinstated last year to the athletic program of West High after an absence of several years. The team coached by Mr. Winston Dodge has great hopes this year with a squad of nine men, most of whom have gained some experience in the previous season. West has a challenging schedule, for they meet Hope and De LaSalle, who always have top notch teams. East Providence and Pawtucket East fill out the remainder of the five team league. Returning this year to action are the Sidel brothers, Arnold and Norman, who are juniors. Coach Dodge has great expectations for these players this year. Hopeful sophomore candidates are Frank St. Pierre, Peter Pashiuk, James Photopoulos, Martin Flamer and Alan Gomel. Eugene Bernstein, a newcomer to the senior class, is another good-looking prospect for the team. Auguste St. Pierre, who was a member of the 1951 squad, has decided to confine his activities this year to track. 87 Walter Adamowicz, ’52 Class History « Now, at the termination of our high school careers, we seniors are looking forward to the future — to college, to jobs, to security. Before attempting or even .pondering over the more laborious tasks ahead of us, however, our class of ’52 would like to take a final glimpse of its past. As we look back to 1949, we remember ourselves as somewhat frightened and uncertain sophomores entering upon a new but wonderful experience — senior high school! After the initial formalities, there followed the usual events and traditions of a sophomore class. First on our schedule was the election of class officers. We felt we had made a wise choice in electing Eugene Thomsen, President; Clara Jennings, Vice-President; Byron Moody, Treasurer; and Patricia Allan, Secretary. The successful presentation of Going On Seventeen gave us, we immodestly admit, much pride and pleasure since it was the first chance afforded us to display our “talents” to West High. The members of the Debating Society held the unique distinction of winning every debate. From the beginning we sophomores, therefore, proved ourselves worthy of being Westerners. This was the first year that Career Day was introduced in our school as an annual affair. Representatives of various professions, local colleges, and businesses gave informative talks on their respective vocations and institutions. In sports our class provided the teams with able and dexterous bodies that held bright promises of victory for West High. The long awaited Soph Hop took place in March. Everyone donned his finery and had a memorable time at his first senior high school dance. The vear was climaxed by the annual Maypole Dance, at which we sophomores were thrilled by the impressive crowning of the May Queen. When we returned the following September we took part in scholastic and extracurricular activities with a new vigor and importance, for now we were “mighty” juniors. We elected Byron Moody, President; Marylou Berry, Vice-President; Marcia MacManus, Secretary; and Robert Almeida, Treasurer. Our class showed worthy talent in various fields of entertainment. The tireless and capable football and basketball teams maintained a good average. The Dramatic Society’s presentation of We Shoo ( the Family Tree enjoyed a notable success. This was the first year the public speaking classes put on a talent show. It went over with such acclaim and approval that it was destined to be an annual affair. In April the Junior Prom marked a gala and enjoyable event. Before we realized it we had become seniors. Various new experiences awaited us. Class pictures — caps and gowns—Honor Day — Parents’ Night! Having returned to school when our city was in the midst of civil defense preparation, we seniors were required to study first-aid. Our class was the first to have the opportunity of observing college night. Our final elections disclosed John Batista, President; Lois Cote, Vice-President; Joan Coyne, Secretary: and Robert Almeida once again. Treasurer. We commenced the social events of the year with the presentation of the three-act comedy Dear Ruth which was a great hit. Spring was a busy time for all of us. The Class Book Board worked hard and faithfully. The annual May Queen and her court were elected. In June plans for the Senior Reception were completed, and the “great event” was successfully held. Finally, graduation night arrived. We found ourselves marching down the aisle to receive our final rewards of scholastic achievement. To our Class of 1952, the three years spent at West were not composed merely of dances, parties, plays, sports events, and unwanted homework. They were composed of much more. They were three years of growing up; of becoming mature young men and women; of bracing ourselves for the problems which shall inevitably confront us in the future; of learning to be good citizens; and of applying democracy. 88 Elizabeth Lake, Merilyn Tucker, ’52 WE ARE HAPPY TO HXTKMl TO “WESTEROAYS” OI K REALLY SINCERE HOOD WISHES ON THEIR PUBLICATION OF THE W EST HIGH ( LASS BOOK.
