WESTE RDAYS 1951 Published by the Senior Class OF WEST Senior High School PAWTUCKET, RHODE ISLAND dbecl ti, icalion Mr. Earle A. Phillips, whom we always picture surrounded by pulleys, test tubes, and chemicals, will be one of our best memories of West. An outstanding chemist, he has had a long, rich career in science; his anecdotes have often served belter than any apparatus to illustrate a law. He was among the foresighted educators who conceived and planned the first Rhode Island Science fair. Because he taught us to love and respect the purpose of science, and because we have appreciated his great understanding, we, the class of 1951, respectfully dedicate this Year Bool( to Earle A. Phillips. 3 Dear Class of 1951: As the second half of the twentieth century begins, you go forth into a world in which fears and tensions are present in our personal, domestic, national and international lives. You are going to need courage, loyalty and a strong set of spiritual values to meet the challenges of our modern world. Your parents and teachers have given you the guideposts for the difficult road of adult life. How well you have accepted the guidance, training and moral values presented to you by those who have been charged with your education, will be reflected in the manner in which you face the problems of living. Most of you are going to begin your careers, others of you are going to continue your formal education, and several of our young men are going to join the Armed Forces. Whichever of these roads you travel on, your character will be tested. If you have an active set of ideals and the fortitude to retain them, you will be successful. I hope that you will have a deep regard for the basic American principle of personal-individual responsibility. You have been taught our system of personal rights, personal duties, and personal justice. I know that you will contribute to the growth of our great American Democracy. I extend to all of you a sincere wish for a successful and happy life. My congratulations to each of you on your completion of your high school education. CHARLES E. SHEA, Principal 4 Offi icerS PRESIDENT To Arthur Scott, president of the Senior Class and of the Student Council, we express our deepest appreciation. His unusual personality and modest spirit, and his unselfish loyalty to our school have won for him a place of high affection and regard. With our Arthur go our best wishes; West will miss him. VICE-PRESIDENT Our vice-president, fane Baltzell, is to be commended for her capable leadership and outstanding scholastic achievement. To fane, a prominent member of the Debating Society, her fellow classmates wish success in her future career. SECRETARY Our class secretary, loan Greenan has a very special importance in our hearts. With her shy charm and unfailing cheerfulness, she will find life pleasant. 7 o Joan, too, our best wishes for the future. TREASURER John Wainwright, one of the most popular members of our class, radiates one l(ind of easy friendliness which the world enjoys. John lilies people — and people li!{e John! Every member has earned his place through careful, consistent scholarship; since in order to be included in the Society, a student must have maintained an average of eighty-five percent for all three years. Thirty-five members, or about 21 percent, of the class of 1951 have earned this distinction. In April of each year, after the membership has been revealed, the Parent Teacher Association recognizes the achievements of our honor students in an assembly before the entire student body. Each member receives, as a symbol of merit, a small gold pin. These pins are highly respected throughout Rhode Island, and are often an important consideration of colleges and employers. Immediately following the assembly, the honor students and their parents are the guests of the Student Council at a sjiecial Honor Day Tea. This has always been among the most delightful and successful social events of the year. Membership in the Society is an enviable distinction, but it comes as a just reward to outstanding students. The Rhode Island Honor Society has the deepest respect and admiration of all of West High School; and honor students will always hold membership in the Society among their most valued memories of high school. 60 Jane Baltzell, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Anne Bent, Eugene Thomsen, Rose Palana, Arthur Scott, Shirley Wilkinson, lane Baltzell, Mildred Brennan, Carolyn Critchlow. Cullen, has retained its position as one of the most successful organizations at West. The Council is comprised of delegates representing each class and extra-curricular activity. The following were elected as officers for 1950-1951: Arthur Scott, president; Rose Palana, vice-president; Shirley Wilkinson, recording secretary; Jane Baltzell, corresponding secretary; Eugene Thomsen, treasurer. The first social event of the year was the Harvest Dance. On December 17 the very successful “Story of Christmas” was presented. Council members boosted school spirit by selling new attractive book covers, also ice cream at our home basketball games. In addition, members again received the privilege of serving as ushers on Career Day. The sparkling, new event of the year, however, was the Shamrock Ball held on March 17. Another of the highlights was the Honor Society Tea held April 12 at which members of the R. I. Honor Society, accompanied by parents and teachers, were guests. At the annual May Frolic, Westerners elected their favorite girl, “Queen of the May.” Much fun was had by members at their outing in the Spring. An outstanding event. Parents’ Night, occurred during commencement week. Throughout the year regular conferences have been held with Mr. Shea by Student Council representatives for the purpose of deciding “what is best for West.” To Miss Cullen, the Seniors wish to express heartfelt thanks and appreciation for her untiring efforts; to our successors, as much pleasure and success as we, the Council members of the Class of ’51, have enjoyed. The Westerner announced our Sophomore Play with the headlines “Paster Eyes Doll In Date Bait.” Sandra Paster and John Doll played the leading roles in this mirthful comedy. This, our maiden production, proved to be a great success in spite of opening night “jitters.” When we reached the rank of Juniors, we were duly disappointed when Miss Marguerite W. Fox, director and advisor of the club, informed us the traditional Junior Play would not be presented. We weresomewhat soothed, however, when we gave Act I of “What A Life” as entertainment during the annual Dramatic Festival at which we served as hosts. As Seniors, we rang down the curtain with our final production “Too Many Dates,” a comedy, starring Edward Bertolini and Aida Alexandre. The rehearsals, performance, and success of this play will be long remembered. The yearly presentation of medals and of the one hundred dollar award to a deserving thespian will help us recollect with pleasure our years in the Dramatic Society. 62 Patricia Broadbent, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Irene Hart, Mildred Brennan, Barbara Duby, Patricia Lees, Nancy Burrows, Patricia Broadbent. This comparatively new field, television, was discussed at our meetings. At the first meeting of the year the following officers were elected: Ann Pritchard, President; Shirley Wilkinson, Vice-President; Irene Hart, Secretary; and Fred Daley, Treasurer. Our first social event of the year was the annual roller-skating party, which was held at Bobby’s Rollerway. This year, as always, it was a financial as well as a social success. Members of the Radio Club presented two skits this year — one for the Pawtucket Busi- ness Chamber, and the other for the Mr. and Mrs. Club of St. Paul’s Church. We also took part in several radio broadcasts, one of which was the “Safety Lady Program” in which Mildred Brennan, Faith Donnelly, Louise Hassan, and Patricia Smith participated. On Class Day, pins were presented to the members of the Radio Club who had been active members for three years; also, a wrist-watch was presented to one member of the club by station WFCI. We, the graduating members of the club, would like to thank our advisor, Miss Henrietta Brazeau, for her guidance and assistance throughout our years at West. 63 Irene Hart, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Marjorie Richardson, Pauline Burns, Joseph Short, Patti Broadbent, Rita Fleming, John Worsley, Max Dressier, Paula Brennan, Fred Daley. The first event was the annual dance held in the gym, which was highlighted by the presentation of a trophy to Edward Garlick, Robert Lund, and Arthur Scott, the three outstanding players of the season. This was the first time in the school’s history that a club recognized the ability of individual players in this manner. In April the Westerner in conjunction with the Debating Society presented a musical, which was a tremendous success. Under the able leadership of the co-editors, Rita Fleming and Joseph Short, the Westerner kept pace with its usual high journalistic standards. Mary Lou Berry, president of the Press Club, ably led her group in assisting the Westerner to a successful season. 64 Rita Fleming, '51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Dawn Ratcliffc, fane Balt .cll, Merilyn Tucker, Ann Pritchard, Mildred Brennan, Walter Pritchard, Carolyn Hayes. Should we legali .e gambling? Would a program of Planned Economy be beneficial in this country? These arc but a few of the controversial questions which members of the Debating Society have considered in heated discussions throughout this year. Interclass debates, ably directed by our adviser, Miss Vivienne F. Cote, have been presented before the student body at several memorable assemblies. An outstanding interscholastic contest which we had long anticipated, eagerly, if somewhat apprehensively, took place when West challenged La Salle Academy. Westerners were justly proud of victory in this forensic struggle. The journey to Kingston to attend the Rhode Island Model Congress has always been one of the most interesting and exciting events on the club agenda. High schools throughout the state send students to serve as representatives and senators in this unique Congress, which follows the pattern of our national Congress as closely as possible. The seniors who were delegates from West High School this year were: Dawn Ratciiffe, Jane Baltzell, Carolyn Hayes, Mildred Brennan, and Ann Pritchard. The West Debating Society was also well represented at the Speech Contest which is held the same day at the college. Everyone who attended this highly successful annual atTair agreed that it would long be remembered as one of the most enjoyable events in his high school days. To promote better understanding between teachers, parents, and students, a Panel Discussion is held each year, at which three members of the Parent-Teachers' Association and three members of the Debating Society discuss topics concerning family and school life. This Panel provides a wonderful opportunity for a profitable exchange of ideas, grievances, and solutions, following the old maxim “six heads arc better than one” in solving our high school problems. On Class Day pins arc presented to those who have been members of the Debating Society for three years. The officers of the club in 1950-51 were: President, Ann Pritchard; Vice-President, Mildred Brennan; Secretary, Merilyn Tucker; Treasurer, Walter Pritchard. The Senior members are deeply grateful to Miss Cote for her enthusiasm, encouragement, and assistance, which have made our three years in the Debating Society so pleasant, as well as profitable. We also wish the best of luck in the future to the new officers and to the other members of the club who, we know, will enjoy participating in these activities as much as we have. 65 Ann Pritchard. Cote, the 1951 French Club spent a highly successful and enjoyable year. Early in September the following students were elected to office: President, Rita Fleming; Vice-President, Irene Hart; Secretary, Lois Cote; and Treasurer, Paul Horvitz. To open the social season the French Club sponsored its annual Fall Dance. All who took part in this activity were rewarded with a wonderful evening. The Christmas season was soon upon us but it did not find the members of Toujours Unis napping. An informal Christmas party was planned and held shortly before vacation. To show their good will the French Club members lent their wholehearted support to the Clubs sponsoring a talent review given in April called, “Hearts and Flowers.” The club members read with pleasure the magazine “L’lllustration” which was purchased for the library by last year’s French Club. Plans are now being completed for the annual French Club picnic to be held in June. Because the picnic marks the end of the social events of the year, everyone is endeavoring to make it a memorable affair. To the future members of Toujours Unis we wish the best of luck in all their undertakings. See you in France. 66 Joan Reardon, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Martin Small, Joseph Short, John Walsh, Harry LcFrancois, Roger Lepinc, George McCrac. Studio- 'Uisucil Education Club A comparatively new club at West, the Audio-Visual Education Club was introduced in 1947. It has, however, in that short time become one of the most popular, due in part to its interesting work. This work includes the showing of short movies to pupils who are, at the time, engaged in work pertaining to that subject which the movie depicts. The A. V. E. C. now boasts of ten members who are extremely proud of their affiliation with the organization. Mr. John O'Reilly, who is the counsellor of the club, is a man well-versed in this work and thereby makes an excellent advisor and instructor. The learning of how to operate a motion picture projector will in later life help the members of the A. V. E. The boys are chosen for their leadership in scholarship, sports, and other school activities. This year there are eight Junior Rotarians. They go to the meetings in pairs. Each pair attends three meetings. In the course of the meeting they enjoy a fine luncheon and are privileged to hear many informative speakers. As guests they are intro- duced to the members and have a chance to talk to men from many fields and professions. It is an excellent opportunity to gain information about a variety of subjects. They also have a chance to meet boys from other schools, for Pawtucket East and Saint Raphael are also represented. From West Senior High one senator and six representatives were chosen to represent the school. These students, under the guidance of Mr. G. Russell Burns, contributed a great deal to the deliberations of both houses. An unusual honor was bestowed on West High School, when Joseph Hagan was chosen as Speaker of the House of Representatives and Walter Pritchard as majority leader of the Senate. Both of these youths drew praise from various state leaders for their excellence. The legislature of 1951 had the unusual privilege of being addressed by the Honorable J. Howard McGrath, Attorney General of the United States, John J. Hearn, Ambassador from Ireland, and Governor Dennis J. Roberts. With these words of wisdom in mind, the Portia Club and the Wranglers of the University of Rhode Island sponsored the thirteenth Rhode Island High School Model Congress, on March 3, 1951, at Kingston. With the world threatened by totalitarian forces, both teachers and students have come to realize the necessity of arousing young people's interest in world affairs and furthering their understanding of our government. The Model Congress fulfills these purposes and provides, as well, an extremely interesting experience for all those who attend. High schools throughout the state send students to serve as senators and representatives in this unique Congress which follows, as closely as possible, the pattern and procedure of our United States Congress in Washington. The delegates from West High School this year were: in the House of Representatives, Jane Baltzell and Mildred Brennan; in the Senate, Carolyn Hayes and Ann Pritchard. The West students successfully opposed a resolution that the American people should reject the Welfare State. The chambers rocked with heated discussions on many exciting and interesting topics throughout the morning and early afternoon. However, the day was not without its lighter pleasures: a delicious luncheon was served at Lippitt Hall, and later there was a reception at w-hich everyone made many new friends. The seniors who were privileged to attend the 1951 Model Congress wish to thank Miss Vivienne F. Cote, who not only made the trip possible, but also saw to it that it was one of the most enjoyable and memorable events in our high school careers. We wish every success to future senators and representatives from West. 70 Ann Pritchard, '51 SEATED: Left to Right—Dorothy Robillard, Shirley Rene, Rrcnda Welch, Richard Desrochers, William Zonfrillo, Patti Ann Benn, Anna Johnston, Florence Arnold, Patricia Huettel, Elinor Anderson, Patricia Greany, Marcia Howe, Joyce Lander. The orchestra was under the patient and capable direction of Miss Marion F. O’Brien. William Zonfrillo was concert master with Florence Arnold as head second violinist. Although the orchestra did not have sufficient time to practice, it has still delighted its audience in the traditional Christmas and Music Assemblies. Two ’cellos and four violins were added to the orchestra this year to give it a fuller, more pleasing quality of tone. The orchestra has maintained the standards set by its predecessors in performing many selections composed by men who have made their names in years past. The selections have been chosen not only to bring enjoyment to an audience but to introduce music that is of a higher caliber than that of musical comedy or jazz. Our sincere thanks is extended to Miss O’Brien for her tireless efforts which enabled us to do our best. We wish her continued success for the future. This was not only due to the combined efforts of Mr. Robert Gray and Mr. Raymond Houghton but also resulted from the enthusiasm of the few band members. The group performed at all of the football games, both at home and away, at school assemblies, and at the All-State Band Concert in December at Hope High School, Providence. At the football games our group, aided by members of the Slater Jr. High School band, was able to inject spirit into the football team and the fans. This was accomplished by the zestful strains of band music and the colorful and intricate formations. The helpful instruction of Mr. Gray, prior to these appearances, cannot be overestimated, for it was he who helped and encouraged the members to further their musical knowledge. It was also he who has sent forth from our school many prominent figures in the music world. As a reward for its hard work the group attended a much appreciated banquet at Goff Jr. High School in November, and the climax of a successful musical year was the participation in the All-State Festival at Westerly in May. 72 Lloyd Kaplan, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Jacqueline Baldwin, Betty DaSilva, Merilyn Tucker, Patricia Allan, Patricia Hucttcl, Patricia Fields, Nancy Murphy, Patti Ann Benn, Marjorie Petisce, Barbara Campbell. Thomas McQuaid, has completed its second successful year at West. In addition to presenting a recorded Treasury of Song program, broadcast over station WEAN, it joined other musical organizations in the annual Christmas pageant, in Christmas, Music Week, and Honors Day assemblies, and in the Spring Variety Show. Its out-of-school schedule included performances before the Pawtucket Young Business Men’s Club, the Rotary Club, and the Goff Junior High School PTA. Daily before-school rehearsals have worked hardships on this group, but all those faithful members who have striven so hard to keep the ensemble functioning feel that the benefits derived from good team work and the promotion of a closer relationship between school and civic bodies have more than compensated for the discomforts of before-dawn rising. The members of the chorus wish to thank their fine director, Mr. McQuaid, whose wonderful patience and skill have made this organization possible. Congratulations from the Class of ’51. 73 Carolyn Critchlow, '51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Jean Holbrook, Lois Deslongchamps, Constance Ogden, Judith Souve, Arlene Bardslcy, Dawn Ratcliffe, Shirley Wilkinson, Irene Hart, Alice Heaney, Barbara Boissoneault. The girls’ voices blend harmoniously to sing many selections of the much loved music of the famous composers. Not only has it been a source of entertainment, but also a fountain of knowledge spraying its culture through the melodious voices of its members. Miss O’Brien, who directs this group, has given much of her free time for this work. The only reward she receives is knowing that the girls will perform with ease and perfection. As in previous years, the Glee Club has participated in the Christmas Assembly, Christmas Pageant, Music Week, and finally the Rhode Island Music Festival in May. 74 Barbara Boissoneault, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Edward Bertolini, Lloyd Kaplan, Halfrcd Peterson, James Casey, Walter Pritchard, IDavid Hessenthaler, Byron Moody. Garland, completed another successful musical year. The Club entertained at many of our school assemblies giving much enjoyment to all who witnessed the proceedings. Most students of the school will always remember how well the Glee Club performed at the Annual Christmas Assembly. The group, through the jxitient efforts of Mr. Garland, rendered the beautious carols in a splendid way. Mr. Garland, head of the music department here at West, has always done a magnificent job directing the Glee Club. Through Mr. Garland’s guidance and useful training, many students formerly from West High are now enjoying themselves in College Glee Clubs. This is just one of the many opportunities offered by the Male Chorus. The Club members of this year’s graduating class will never forget the happy times experienced in this organization. 75 Lloyd Kaplan, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—George Ribeiro, Edward Choquette, Henry Rustigan, Robert Blanchard, James Panichas. Although the group was unorganized at the beginning of the school year, it was quickly reconstructed and functioning perfectly. This organization consists of members who have been approved by Mr. Charles E. Shea, our school principal, and voted in by the regular members. The group sponsored various school affairs throughout the year such as the hayride to Camp Westwood. This was a huge success. The club members also witnessed numerous roundtable discussions. A few topics that were discussed were Communism, Sex Education, and Religion. The members of the Hi-Y who are graduating this year wish the best of luck to succeeding Hi-Y’ers. 76 Lloyd Kaplan, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Beverly Holgate. Lois Cote. loan Crecnan. Each Wednesday at the Y.M.C.A. the West Tri-Hi-Y was called to order by the President Anne Bent, assisted by Pauline Burns, Vice-President, Joan Greenan, Secretary, Lois Cote, Treasurer, and Janet Cote, Chaplain. Our new advisor, Miss Ruth Carty did a wonderful job in guiding us through the year. The club enjoyed many activities such as a bowling league, balminton competition, hay-rides, cootie parties, a Mother and Daughter Tea, and a wonderful Christmas formal. The highlight of the year was the choosing of thirteen girls to attend the Older Girls’ Conference at Greenfield, Massachusetts, March 2, 4. All the girls who attended felt greatly enriched by the speeches, friends and fun there. Besides having fun, the club pitched in and worked on a project for the school. The senior members of Tri-Hi-Y want to wish the cluh every success in the years to come. 77 Anne Bent, '51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Georgia Scott, Ruth Campbell, Barbara Boissoneault, Audrey Whalen, Carol Cote, Marilyn Scott. Six senior home rooms are participating in this program regularly. A representative is selected from each room to interest the pupils in buying stamps and bonds. Miss O’Reilly, who is responsible for the success of this program, spends much of her time on this work. Ruth Campbell, her capable secretary, records what each home room pur- chases and passes out the stamps to the representatives after Miss O’Reilly obtains them. From these records it is found that room 272 has bought the most bonds and stamps. The credit goes to Audrey Whalen for this achievement. The co-operation of every student is necessary if this group is to continue to give its best performance. If this help is secured, the success of the Stamp and Bond Committee will continue. 78 Barbara Boissoneault, ’51 Left to Right—Mary Lou Berry, Nancy Bobel, Pauline Burns, Natalie Andrade, Dawn Ratcliffe, Nancy Burrows, Barbara Shaw. ♦ ♦ ♦ eer Through rain and shine the West High football and basketball teams were always enthusiastically supported by the seven varsity cheerleaders. Aided by the helpful suggestions of Miss Electra Fogliano and the dependable leadership of our head cheerleader, Barbara Shaw, we always tried our best to lead the Westerners in their cheering. Every Friday after school, the cheerleaders could be found either in the cafeteria or the gymnasium practising earnestly for the oncoming games. To the varsity cheerleaders of ’52, who, we know, will do an excellent job, we wish to extend our thanks and appreciation for the co-operation shown at all times. To Miss Fogliano, the cheerleaders are sincerely thankful for her untiring efforts in directing them and also for her much appreciated words of encouragement. And to the West High cheering crowd, many well-deserved praises are due for their loyal support at the school games. 80 Dawn Ratcliffe, ’51 FRONT ROW: Left to Right—(acquelinc Baldwin, Anne Bent, Helen Simon, Constance Ogden, Elsie Coito, Lois Bateman, Patricia Fields. With shining batons and high white boots, they could be seen at every game twirling their team on to victory. For the first time since the organization began, the twirlers marched on to the field in front of the band, while head twirler Constance Ogden led them in various formations and maneuvers. Going through their routine of difficult tricks, they gave a great performance, and although they spent many tedious hours in practice, they were rewarded by the long, hearty cheers from the appreciative crowd. The Senior twirlers sincerely wish the best of luck to their younger sisters and hope that they will be met with every success. 81 Constance Ogden, ’51 HIRST ROW: Left to Right—Patricia Fields, Rose Palana, Carole MacMillan, Mary Lou Tefft, Dawn Ratcliffe, Maybcllc Stirling, Sandra Paster. The girls who were fortunate enough to be selected for this group have thoroughly enjoyed the activities of this past year. The Leaders Corps is composed of girls who are interested in sports. It is their responsibility to take part in as many after school sports as possible and to be of assistance in the gym- nasium during their gym classes and after school as well. One of the privileges of a Leader is that she may referee the various sports, such as volleyball, basketball and badminton, provided that her mark on each of these tests is high enough. Through this group many girls have not only obtained a better understanding and appreciation of sports, but they have also learned to become good sports themselves. 82 Dawn Ratcliffe, ’51 o Left to Right—Miss Joan Butler, Ann Pritchard, Joyce Andrews, Barbara Shaw, Carolyn Critchlow, Maybelle Stirling, Marion Vine, Ruth Currier, Marilyn Polkc, Janet Cote, Mary Lou TefTt, Patricia Lees, Patricia Fields, Dawn RatclifTc, Beverly Holgate, Beverly Brooks, Felecia Allen, Miss Elcctra Fogliano. ♦ ♦ ♦ The Dolphin Club has had an unusually large following this year, probably because more and more of the undergraduates are beginning to realize that great skill is not a necessity for participation in this club. A good sense of coordination and rhythm, average swimming ability, and a willingness to work are the only requisites necessary for membership. Neither speed nor perfection of stroke is required. The actual purpose of the club is to develop enjoyment of water activities for all types of swimmers. The club climaxed its efforts this year with a gala water pageant put on for the general public. Among the water feats presented were stunts, diving, rhythmic swimming and graceful water ballet routines. It was well received by its audience. The members of this group deserve a great deal of credit for their faithful participation and diligence which made this year’s Dolphin Club an outstanding success. 83 Felecia Allen, '51 Left to Right—Miss Joan Butler, Norma Batastini, Joyce Andrews, Albina Petrucelli, Beverly Brooks, Mry Laiu Tefft, Rose Palana, Barbara Trombley, Miss Electra Fogliano. ♦ ♦ ♦ d adbetba (( Girls' basketball has always been a popular sport at West. Twice a week the girls were seen in the gym displaying their athletic ability. First, careful instructions were given under the excellent supervision of Miss Fogliano and Miss Butler. The many important techniques, such as pivoting, juggling, passing, and shooting helped the girls in their competition. As the season progressed, the Bombshells, an outstanding Senior team, were placed high in their league, followed by the Charlestonettes, an up-and-coming Junior team. These two teams met in the semi-finals, the Juniors being defeated after a well-played game. The undefeated Bombshells, led by co-captains Bev Brooks and Albina Petrucelli, went on to capture the school championship by defeating the Freshman Eight, 23-12. As we leave West High, the class of '51 hopes basketball will always be one of the top sports in girls after-school activities. 84 Rose M. Those are the familiar words that the juniors and seniors heard every Tuesday in the gym. This year, under the direction of Miss Fogliano and Miss Butler, the three classes in West completed a wonderful season of volleyball with the senior team “The Bombshells” capturing the championship. The co-captains of the Bombshells were Bev Brooks and Albina Petrucelli who kept the players on their toes in order to beat out a fast ninth grade team called “The Fighting Freshmen.” Volleyball has always been a top sport for the girls at West. The class of '51 hopes that it will continue to be the favorite sport of all future Westerners. 85 Anne Bent, 51 Left to Right—Barbara Shaw, Maybelle Stirling, Constance Ogden, Carole MacMillan, Patricia Fields, Barbara Trombley. ♦ ♦ ♦ badminton The badminton playoffs displayed keen competition this year. After a long, hard battle, all but two seniors were finally eliminated from the singles tournament. Barbara Trombley succeeded in capturing the singles championship. Constance Ogden was runner up. The eliminations in the doubles left the team of Barbara Shaw and Maybelle Stirling and the team of Patricia Fields and Carole Mac Millan. After a well played game, Barbara Shaw and Maybelle Stirling obtained the doubles championship. We wish to congratulate the winners of the tournament and to thank Miss Fogliano for her patience and understanding supervision. We would also like to extend to next year’s badminton participants our heartfelt wishes for an equally successful year. 86 Constance Ogden, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Joseph Kingsley, Edward Bertolini, Robert McCrystal, Arthur Scott, Robert Lund, co-captain; Eugene Hagan, Henry Rustigian, William Osborne, Donald SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Manager Thomas Gorman, Robert Almeida, John Hunt, Elmore Matteson, Richard Coia, James Spooner, Joseph McArthur, Robert Walsh, William DiMuccio, David Handrigan, Lawrence Calabro, Manager Robert Marran. They opened their campaign with a hard-earned 14-7 victory over Woonsocket. Their next game made the headlines, as they tied the Class B champions, West Warwick, 7-7. They were beaten by a powerful Aldrich eleven. Then, with Henry Rustigian scoring three touchdowns, West defeated North Providence, 27-6. After that game, there ensued a series of “heart-breakers,” the Rangers losing to Gorton by only one point. Next came two more disappointments as Central Falls managed to win by a six point margin, and Classical by seven. In the last game of the season, Mt. St. Charles edged West by a score of 21-19. Much credit is due to Co-Captains Bob Lund and Ed Garlick for their very capable leadership. The spirit shown by the 1950 football team is something future teams at West might well duplicate. 87 Arthur Scott, William Osborne, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—George Brigids, Gordon Holmes, Joseph McKechnie, Peter Kanelakos, Capt. BmULtl West High’s Basketball team ended the 1950-51 season with a record of 5 wins, 17 losses; 3 of the wins, however, were exhibition games. This year was the most crucial in West's history. The team as a whole had little experience, and Coach Bill Rutledge was faced with a serious rebuilding job for the years ahead. The Rangers seemed to be on the right track as they opened the season nipping both Cranston and Aldrich in exhibition games, but then bowed to Attleboro, Lockwood, and LaSalle. The league opened January 3 against Woon socket and the Rangers pulled out of the contest with a victory after an even fight all the way. Then the boys faced East Providence and gave them a real battle. Although West ended up on the short end of the score, it was the best game of the season. De LaSalle and LaSalle both defeated us. Then things changed, but not for long. We edged by Woonsocket, but the Rangers lost six straight to Westerly, St. Raphael, Pawtucket East, Mount St. Charles, East Providence, and De LaSalle. We had little trouble beating Barrington. This was the last victory for the Rangers, as we ended the season bowing to Woonsocket, Westerly, St. Raphael, and Pawtucket East. Members of the team who are graduating would like to thank Coach Bill Rutledge and hope he will have better luck in the years to come. 88 Stanley Crompton, ’51 Left to Right—Mr. Perry Quimby, Chester O'Neil, Joseph Short, William Murray, Donald Cameron, Peter Langlois, Robert Lund, Arthur Scott, Albert Sheldon, Paul Horvitz, Auguste St. Pierre, Robert Hayden, William Ward, Theodore Green, Rodney Scott, Donald Hulme, Donald Enos, Bruce Marron. ♦ ♦ ♦ e . _jwun Although West High’s swim team did not have a successful season neither did it establish a poor record. West swam against some of the toughest teams in New England and always showed the spirit and good sportsmanship found in all athletes at West. Captain Art Scott, the teams most valuable man, turned in magnificent performances at every meet, usually coming out a double winner. Bob Lund and Joe Short, the only other seniors, also gave creditable performances. Lund excelled in the forty and one hundred yard freestyle, and Short, in diving and relay. Other members who also gave star performances were Auguste St. Pierre, Don Cameron, Pete Langlois, and Bob Hayden, all of whom will be leaders on next year’s team. In two exciting meets. West won against St. Raphael and Naval Prep. The Brookline meet resulted in a tie. West also managed to score eleven points at Brown meet, and also came in fifth at the Meehan meet. Coach Perry Quimby deserves credit for making the team one of the most spirited teams we have ever had. 89 Joseph Short, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—Raymond Jordan, Arthur Scott, John Walsh, Joseph Short, Harry LeFrancois, Donald Chirnsidc, Richard Beretta, Allen Bistrick. Last year’s team, under the coaching of Norman Barnes, came up with a six hundred average, the best that West has ever had. This year the team has its eyes on an eight hundred to one thousand average. This year, Coach Barnes has started to build a home track which should be completed before the season opens. The track will be located at Elgasco Field and is being constructed by the team itself. So, for the first time in the history of West, the school will finally be able to see its track team in action. Veterans who will spearhead the team this year are Captain Joe Short, Harry Le Francois, Sa ua and Ed Bertolini, the only three senior veterans. Other stars of the team will be John Turner, the fastest dash man we have. Paul Watson and John Walsh also will add to our running ability. Big Don Chirnside will head the weight men. Last year’s team was very powerful in running, but very weak in weights. This year we still have a strong running team, and we have also built up power in the weights. This year Coach Barnes will be replaced by Coach Norbert Donnely. Mr. Barnes has been assigned to Goff Jr. High School. The track team will always remember Mr. Barnes as the man who made track into one of West’s top sports. 90 Joseph Short, ’51 FIRST ROW: Left to Right—James Panichas, Henry Rustigian, John Wainwright, Robert Lund, Peter Kanelakos. The 1951 Varsity Baseball Squad of West High under the capable supervision of Coach Rutledge and the dynamic leadership of Captain Jack Wainwright is looking forward to a very successful season. Although it is not completely a veterans squad, many of the newcomers gained valuable experience in the Twi-Hi-League last summer. Ul The squad is composed as follows: in the infield we have Bob Fields at first, Gordon Holmes at second, Ken Isherwood at short, and Jack Hunt at third. The outfielders are Bob Lund, Henry Rustigian, Donald Bell and Rene Bollengier. The battery is as follows: Rodney Scott, Tony Soares, and Captain Jack Wainwright pitchers, and Larry Calabro behind the plate. SECOND ROW: Left to Right—Mr. Norman Barnes, Walter Pritchard. ♦ ♦ ♦ (LroS5 (Lountri V The first Cross-Country Team at West was composed of two seniors, two juniors, and two sophomores which was started by Coach Norman Barnes. This year, being our first, we did not have a successful season, but the members of the team deserve credit for their hard work and spirit; for not only did they participate in meets, but they ran the whole season without any support from the student body. In every meet which West participated in, not one of our men failed to finish. The members of the team were Harry Le Francois, Dave Bowes, Paul Horvitz, Terry Pritchard. Dick Brassard, and Joe Short. Short had the honor of being presented with the first letter ever given in this sport. Coach Barnes is hoping to develop Cross-Country into one of West’s leading sports, but he cannot do so without the help of the students. He expresses an urgent call to sophomores and juniors to take an interest in the sport for next year. We should all be grateful to these boys who introduced this new sport of Cross-Country to West Senior High School. 92 Joseph Short, ’51 C L A 5 5 ode: A-rz-O prifohAV- M 1 3 c- by -ShJr-Uy U)'tk' O J 3 The.! 3 [ ' S.r ?W - jj - Tw - we «Y l« «- t H , '“ ,bc ____ «. — y'-y- z y — r ' '■ te jOur H|c-ru? - J««l | jt|«f « AM 1 Fe rJ, 0„ t i “fJeh-fJw.j Y- E-l pk——— —j — B p bl I 1 F-P ■ I 1 J i i i — 1 — • r; =F ai izr 7?)o =0-+ ipc-. |ji es j 4.- be U- Ufsy- haJocuaj uJif-h br jt I K'O Wy rfiy U r 7 'our vi«i--iHj li h t For- — r g=tZ S :p T £ Wrc« F din t T'jhr fj E=n :=c 1 - 3 Wid. - J cd H ±x tJ S.
