Each year the art department becomes more active with such activities as various city and state-wide exhibitions, shows at other schools, the annual spring show, which in- cludes 500-700 pieces of art, and the National Scholastics show. This department has grown from seven classes, 130 students, in 1963 to 15 classes and more than 400 students in 1968. The band made appearances at many ath- letic contests and presented several concerts in the auditorium. The vocal department presented concerts during the year, some of which were for the annual Thanksgiving and Easter programs. They also formed the traditional singing Christmas tree. Along with these many activities, both the choir and band participated in special activi- ties at commencement. One section of the choir waits for its cue during a daily practice session.

Daily journals were kept by students in Eng- lish Composition and Advanced Placement Eng- lish. Mrs. Joan Swinney's juniors prepared colo- nial newspapers with their study of that period in American literature. Mr. Joe Nixon's sopho- mores studied parliamentary procedure. Sever- al classes used the Wichita Eagle and various Joe Morell, Deeann Glamser, and Jeanne Heatherly, Jour- nalism ll students, prepare West Words for mailing to adver- tisers and other schools. Speech I, Debate l, ll. M.E., English ll, Sophomore Class. ps add to interest magazines as supplementary work. Fifteen students attended the second annual Book and Author Seminar in September. Throughout the year, others attended work- shops and special lectures on associated subjects. Besides the required English Il and III classes, the department offered thirteen other choices.
