It walks with us down D corridor between classes. lt sits with us during assembly. lt is our ever-present mascot at every football and basketball game. Yes, Time marches on. Many of us have been friends all through our school years, through grade school, intermediate, and now high school. We have many fond memories of skinned knees, mumps, chickenpox, discovering the opposite sex, our first introduction to American history, attending our first dance, receiving our first high school annual, writing our junior research theme, driving the car to school for the first time, trying to choose our career - all of these are memories of the past. So it ends. We have marched with Time to the ending of our childhood and to the commencement of the great, bright future ahead. As we march with Time through the '59 Trail, let us remember me fun we had in classes, the teachers who have become our friends through the years, the clubs of which we were members, the school dances, the football games, pep assemblies, basketball games, and the many friends who will sign their names on these pages. Let us try to relive the moments captured here which are gone but not forgotten. .i T ..,, 'ii ,,.., A ',:i. 2 , if Ni i I fi it f 'N' i +4 fx . Junior attendants were Ken Coleman and Judy Christopherson, Paul Donham and Nancy Wood- land. Tickets for the dance were sold out in advance, and a large crowd of students was in attendance. The general comment was that this was the best football dance ever! 36 Lynda Scott Preigning over the all- school dance, Football Fan- tasy, were Monty Brown, King, and Lynda Scott, Queen. Monty has been a member of the football squad three years, played varsity basket- ball this year and is president of L.ettermen's Club. His interest in sports has made him a popular athlete while at West. Lynda has been a cheer- leader for two years and is head cheerleader this year. She has been an active member of Y-Teens, Junior Class assembly committee, Football Dance committee, and Pep Club. Lynda was also a can- didate for Camival queen her sophomore year, and was elect- ed first runner up. Pictured are Joy Carpenter, second runner-upg Judy Christopherson, Miss Santay and Paula Holliday, first runner-up. The crowning of Miss Santa was the highlight of the Christmas dance. Judy Christopherson was chosen on the basis of poise, personality, and physical beauty. Candidates were judged first in shorts and sweaters, then in formals. Each club elected a candidate to represent it in the contest. All candidates did an extremely fine job. The Christmas Dance is an annual affair sponsored by the Senior Class. Wonderland On Ice was the theme which was carried out through the decora- tions. A snowman, Christmas tree, and snowflakes transformed the cafeteria into a Wonderland, which will long be re- membered by all those who attended this dance. 37 DRAMA Scene one finished by Friday, is a familiar statement to many Pioneer actors and actresses. Mr. Hawley Farnsworth, director of drarnatics, settles for nothing less than perfection in produc- tions which appear on our stage. The program aids in physical development of students and encourages and teaches good health habits. In stressing sportsmanship, the coaching staff furthers emotional development by teach- ing appreciation for winning and good spirit in defeat. Many skills are taught in the physical education classes that will help students in later life. One of the important ones is that of learning to work together and get along with other students. The major sports offer satisfaction to those who participate because they are representing West High. Going to games and supporting the team are highlights of the school year. It enables them to participate in a play situation for fun and improvement of skills in those sports that have been taught in the regular school program. Some activities are not offered in class work. These are usually those for which we have no school facilities - bowling and skating. Three groups of activities are offered: fall, winter, and spring. In the fall, tennis, archery, swimm- ing, both recreational and life saving, and modern dance are all offered. The winter program offers lifesaving, synchroniz- ed swimmjng, badminton, bowling, basketball and skating. The spring program will include softball, tennis, bowling, swimming and probably canoeing. There are classes which cover almost every area of interest. College Algebra, physics, shorthand, World Literature, Home Decoration, Boys, Foods, physical education - these classes represent many different departments. Inexperienced sophomores, overly-confident juniors, and superior seniors make up the student body. The friendly rivalry between classes adds much to high school experience, but the enjoyment of sophomores, juniors, and seniors combining their efforts on the all-school play, working together to win ball games, and presenting concerts completes the educational experience. s 4 .--. 4... , s if, s 464, v'M -fN-- I XV- X ,A f ,N 'E Riga A A rf 1.::'.e YK Here Comes The Class Of '61 - -- eodlnq the l11ny rllfCIllblO26?I'SI' down the truil dumnq tlwir lirsst ywxr nt 'M-:sl un-z Horan, llurpwr, swim-::11'y-trmngnrrfr5 y Mason, prebiulcnlg Connie llurl, vice-pu-zslderll. Through these doors we, as Seniors, will de- part for the last time, leaving behind the years of high school which have passed so quickly. The games, dances, plays, and homework are behind us now, and we soon shall be known as alumni of Wichita High School West. We leave behind us our lockers, waiting for someone new to cram them with books, coats, and food: the desks, from which our books slipped to the floor so many times: and we leave a part of our- selves, an individual memory which will re- main in these halls forever. Yes, Time marches on, and so do we. As we face the great, bright future ahead, let us occasionallyloolc back, smile, and remember . . . HO -A- Aarae, Tony, 20,54 Abberr, Marya, 34,64 Abney.
