It is eternally old and yet as vibrantly new as each E class which enters on hesitant feet. It is a little older when a class which Q has spent three years under her shelter departs. I Yesterday that spirit and all the fine principles constituting West were being builded and molded carefully by the students for a better and finer future. + Today the world is changing. All eyes are cast toward the latest produc- E tions and inventions in the realm of geophysics, and we find ourselves to be i citizens living on the brink of a new era. Satellites soar, speculation about 5 space travel is on all lips, and we try to condition our minds to accept the new I discoveries which are on our horizon. , As the world is being constantly subjected to progress and change, for L creating the world which must be on hand to meet the needs of coming genera- I V g tions, so must we, the students of today, progress and grow. Through the traditions which we build, the customs which we follow, and the necessary rules by which we abide, we hold the foundation for tomorrow. This foundation i is one which must not be allowed to vibrate under the added responsibilities 1 of the new age. 4 To you, the students of TODAY, we dedicate the 1958 TRAIL with challenge, and to you, the citizens of TOMORROW, we 'lo k with hopes for a structure worthy of such a foundation. Wichita High School West's Pioneers finished the season with an overall record of seven wins and two losses. The City League mark of 4-2 was good enough for second place. West opened the season at Old Shocker Stadium in a sea of mud. In between intermittent downpours, the Pio- neers found time to hand Ark City's Bulldogs flater Ark Valley champions! their only defeat of the season, 14-6. The following week saw the inaugural of City League play. Wichita East's Blue Aces dealt the Pioneers a 14-0 setback. This was the first time in the history of the school that the football team had failed to score. West next journeyed up the Turnpike for a game with E1 Dorado's Wildcats. Despite the flashy running of El Dorado's Charlie Lively, one of the fastest backs in the area, the Maroon and Gold won out. The fourth game was against the Redskins of Wichita North. Although passing had been the Pioneers' chief weapon of attack, it was in this game that their ground attack began rolling as North fell 27-6. The Pioneers ran over the Golden Buffaloes 33-0. This victory, coupled with an East loss to North in the second game of the double-header gave West temporary possession of first place. East's Blue Aces were next. West led at halftime, but could not hold the advantage, as the Aces again triumphed, this time 20-13, shoving the Maroon and Gold down to third in the League. A non-league game with the Newton Railroaders followed. Although the game featured two of the area's top passers, it turned out to be a defensive battle which West won 12-0. North High's Redskins fought West tooth and toe nail for three quarters, but yielded two touchdowns to the Pioneers in the fourth quarter. The score was 13-0. In the final game of the season, Southeast's Golden Buffaloes lost 39-7. West ended the season one-half game out of first place and were ranked seventeenth in the state. In nine games, West backs carried the ball 366 times for a total of 1,537 yards. This was a 4.2 average per carry. West quarterbacks threw 98 passes and completed 45 of them for 621 yards. This topped the City League and this general area of the state. Total offense was 2,158 yards, an average of 240 per contest. West was second defensively in the City, holding her opponents to 1019 yards on the ground and 291 in the air. As far as individuals are concerned, Bill Williams scored the most points, 68, and completed the most passes C44 for 599 yardsl. Ken Coleman led in rushing. He carried the ball 51 times for a 6,4 mark per carry. Pioneer halfback Monty Brown struggles vainly to keep moving forward as East's john Rader slows him to a halt. 1'm comin' thrdughln Such was probably the thought of West halfback Gary Chastain as he struggled to evade two well-muddied Golden Buff racklers. West High's Pioneers finished the season with a 7-12 won-lost record. Victories during the regular season came over Wellington, Derby twice, and Southeast twice. Some of the sting of a poor season was eased by play in the final four games. The Pioneers upset Southeast in the final League game. The 'magic' carried over into the regionals as the Maroon and Gold dumped Augusta. Then, in the biggest upset of the year, West achieved revenge for 3 regular-season de- feats by downing Kapaun, 39-37 in two overtimes. A regional championship was not fated, though. El Dorado's talented Wildcats won the state tourney berth by five points. 1957-1958 Varsity Basketball Team B-Team Top Row, left to right: Coach Sumner Roberts, Gerald Winkle, Fred Maurer, Roger Davis, Gary Van Scoyk, Wayne jenkins, Bruce Roberts, Tony Blake, Paul Donham, Bill Munn, Gary Fisher, Monty Brown. The state meet rolled around, and predictions made West and East the favorites. The predictions were 1 right, but ,the Pioneers could not reverse the season's trend and so finished second in the State with 40 points. 1 Sf 1 .ii Y I l L I West Hlgh Gymnastlcs Squad Top Row: john Binyon, Emory Johnson, Bill Bonner, Dick Carlburg, Tom Rabourn, Ray Oaks, Mike Cohlmia. 'Pioneer Harriers Rank Fifth In State Although the cross-country turnout was small, West High's team placed fifth in the state meet, held at Shawnee Country Club in Topeka. A random sampling of the scores would indicate two things: first, West usually seemed to finish third or fourth in small meets, with East and North both doing bettetg second, the larger the meet, the better the finish. Top runner was Charles Snider, who, incidentally, is the only senior on the squad. The others will be back to form the nucleus of a strong team. Cross Country Team-1957 Coach J. D.
