The highlight of the game came on the first pla when Jack Scofield threw a long pass to Gene Crossette who sprinted 30 yards for the first D to be tabulated by any West High Athlete. Notc on tent with scoring once, the Pioneers pushed five more rallies into pay dirt before the final gun! The score 38 -O! Newton, September 25, 1953 The Pioneers overpowered the Newton Railroaders in their first out of town ame, 21-O! A quick pass in the first half from Scofieldgto Zobel, marked up the team's first tally, ln the third period, after a sustained drive, Les Hall plunged over from the 5 yard line to score the second touc down! In the final stanza, Hall added six more points by :printing twelve yards off tackle. Scofield then kicked his ird consecutive extra point of the game, to sew up the West High Victory. Arkansas City, October 9, 1953 The West Hi h Pioneers tasted their first bitter defeat in the history oigthe school when they bowed to the Ark Valley League Champions, Ark City, 13 to 7. T e bu ldogs scored first midway in the second period when Jim Kenn , fullbac k, raced 42 yards off-tackle without a handytouching him. Perioco kicked the extra point and the bulldogs led 7 to 0 at the half. The Pioneers came back fighting, taking, the ball on their own 25 and moving 75tyards to a touc down. Sco- field carried the last 3 yards or the score. He then kicked the conversion, and the score was tied 7 to 7. At the start of the fourth quarter the Ark Citians re- ceived awestdpunt on their 40 yard line and by short line plunges move the ball to the West 4, The Pioneer line stiffened and held for three downs but on the fourth Curtis Adams scored from the two. The kick was wide and the North, October 16, 1953 Hutchinson, October 2, 1953 In what was considered the toughest game ofthe sea- son, West squeaked out a 1 point margin over an ambitious Salt Hawk eleven by scoring asix-pointer in the last two minutes of play. The final score was 32 to 31. West scored three times in the first half while Hutch counted once and it looked as thou h this one was in the bag, but a dropped punt retum, a bqocked kick, and two fumbles on plays from scrimmage donated 25 points to the Salrylcause. est dominated play in the final stanza controllin the ball most of the period and scoring twice to wrap upgheir third straight win of the season. The Redskins reversed histor , and scalped the Pioneers to the chant of 14-6, in their illrst game together. In the first quarter followinga series of fumbles from both sid s, a North linesman fell on a wild center of West's, and afler several short gains, Vauglhn sneaked over to make the first T D, At the end of the alf the score was raised to 14-0, by a pass from Vaughn to Simpson, and a conversion by Dilllon. In the last quarter, Scofield hit Gene Crossette with an aerial from the 40 to the 14 yard line, and Cros- sette went over to score West's only touchdown as the gun sounded. Bullpups led 13 to 7. Winfield, Oct. 23, 1953 Playinghspirited ball, the Pioneers made their offense click and eir defense hold, dropping the Vikings from Winfield 19-14 at Veterans' field. TheVik ings drew first blood when they caught the West defense napping and scored on a screen pass. West came right back when Dunbar raced 60 yards off tackle for the score. Later in the same period, after an exchange of punts, Crossette went 59 yards for the second Pioneer touchdown. At the beginning of the fourth stanza the Vikes gave the Wayflnders a scare when Charles Faust intercepted a West pass and raced 98Lyards for the tieing score. However the Pioneers sewed up e victory when Scofield hit Cros- sette with a 28 yard aerial. Eldorado, November 13, 1953 Augusta, October 30, 1953 The West High Pioneers were held to a suprising 6 to 6 tie by a keyed-up Augusta Oriole team. The Pioneers scored from'rhe 1-yard line with 15 seconds left in the first half. The third period was scoreless, but late in the fourth quarter, the Orioles scored their only touchdown, The Augusta attempt for the extra point failed. Playing their second tie 'game of the ear, the West Pioneers held a favored ldorado Wildlcat team to a '7-7 deadlock. In the first half, neither team netrated beyond each others 20 yard line, but micfway in the third period, Dunbar raced fort -two yards through the middle on a trap play. Scolfleld then kicked the all- important point, The Wildcats received the kickoff on their o,wn 1 yard line, and proceeded to claw their way 99 yards or the tieing score. rf. xii, Wellington, November 4, 1953 Playing in bleak-soglgy weather, the West High Pioneers were defeated y the Wellington Crusaders 13-6. Wellington started with a bang, scoring' before 3 minutes had passed and it looked as thot? it would be a rout, But West High dug in and hel them to a 7-0 half time score, In the third perioda40 yard pass from Scofield to Crossette netted the Wichitans 6 points, but the extra point was missed. Late in the fourth the Crusaders scored the final tally of the game, East, November 30 West smeared East in a muddy upset at Veterans' Field. The Pioneers defeated the Aces 13-6 as approximately 1,500 fans watched in sorrow, amazement, and joy. On the first T D, Dunbar plunged ten yards. west led East 7-0 at the half. East scored oncein the third period, but the kick went wide and it seemed as though Sco ield's accurate toe would spell the victory for West.
