No more could she be counselor or friendg The time would drag, for now they were apart Until at last the day when war would end. Her life seemed desolate, and dreary gray. She slowly cleaned his room and shed a tearg She cried a bitg then wiped her tears away. A patriotic mother does not fear. A Red Cross meeting! That would be the thing! She left his room and quickly donned a hat. Slowly her mind again began to sing. ' 1 SPORTS L -AI' 1 I5 E 1 5 5 5 5 fe 5 is S Sw Q E E F r w 5 3...-9 FOOTBALL Here is a record of your Occidental teams and their final standings in the Interscholastic League. Some of the teams made a name for themselves and the school, while others through lack of material only turned in a fair or even a poor season. No matter what was the outcome of the various teams, credit is due the coaches, who not only had their teams to look after, but had accelerated gym programs to take their time. Orchids to the Cross-Country squad which was the first city team to beat Edison Tech in an Interscholastic barrier meet in five years, tying for first place, the best record of any West High team this year! Coached by Johnny lVIacNab, the runners came back from a defeat by East to beat the Edison squad, which was the cityis best at the time. Of spring sports, Track has the best record, that is of major sports. Royal Brown's Cinder- men finished in 3rd place. Baseball, starting out as a high class team, slipped into Sth place by the end of the season. Ot' the minor sports, Horseshoes tied for a 3rd place, Golf 'tied for 4th position with Charlotte, while City Champion Wally Ryan led a not-so-hot Tennis season which only gained a 5th place. I First Team: Albert Almansberger, Raymond Baker, David Brede, Tom Cardillo, Edwin Dechau, Wilber Fraser, Edward Kueppers, Anthony Leone, Albert Manciocchi, James Mikel, George Monogon, Jr. Hugh Murphy, Captain. Albert lVIcClements, Robert Oliver, Jordan Pappas, Paul Perdue, Paul Rankin ,lohn Schirmer, James Stewart, Thomas Taylor, Jack Terborg, Fred Wahl. Reserves: Harry Bodie, Jr. Gerald Doser, William Gannon, Lyle Garnish, Joe Gardner, Leland Odell, William O,Connor, Donald Phelps, Philip Reed, Harry Reed, Willis Stewart. I-'E ' 'Q I 45 a' S S? Aside from the afore-mentioned Cross-Country squad, the fall of '42 saw one good team and one poor one. Soccer finished in 2nd place, while a green football eleven fell to the cellar of the league. Winter saw a Rasketball quintet affected by the war and a Swimming team that finished in second place, which the hard working natators certainly deserved! Led by the high-class performance of a championship relay team, the swimmers really went to town. Basketball fared differently, however, with the loss of Don Smith in the middle of the season being keenly felt. Here again, as in Baseball, was a squad that started off with plenty of spark, but fell steadily towards the bottom when the middle of the season was reached. The quintet finished in 6th place. A number of Occidental athletes joined up with Uncle Sam, and something should be said of them. Hugh Murphy, Al L'Butterballs Balestriere, Dusty Cole, ,lohn Smith and Albert Manchiocci are -only a few. To those fellows who saw something more than just high school athletics, credit is due. Thomas Auld, Robert Beisheim, James Dash, Robert Dorschel, Walt Fallon, Roger Felch, George Cray, Charles Harris, Richard Head, Donald lllig, Charles Laird, Hobart Miles, Richard Mothorpe, Ronald Mowers, Robert Nicol, Robert Rowan, Charles Sheldon, Richard Simmons, William Smith, Manager, Larry Snyder, Captain, Paul Sullivan, Ted Van Zandt, Howard Whatford, Assistant Manager. 46 51? 1 - . - -' L,:'i4 t-,-11. ff:'.,1-is is ,al-f'Sv'? 5k-f .1'-assefff 'K' ' . v..f:1--pefirtezs' SWIMMING 761 RELAY SQUAD IJ f ,-fs, .3 if I Brute Brooks, William Brown.
