Snow? If you've lived in Iowa, snow is nothing new. But, to foreign student Maria Teresa Costa, snow is very new and different, and she attacks it with a fer- vor. And why not? In Brazilia, Brazil, the tempera- ture barely falls below 70 degrees. Maria, sponsored by St. johnfs Methodist Youth Exchange, was surprised by the formality and lack of responsibility in American students. The younger teachers are called by their first names in my school. Also, the student must have more responsibility. Opposing Maria's impression of the conservative American school was West's AFS foreign student, Lena Gatzona. The brown-eyed, brunette from Thessaloniki, Greece, was unused to the freedom she found in American schools. ln Greece, we have not so many rights. At school we have to be serious, very serious, because the teachers are not so friendly as here. Besides carrying 14 school subjects, Lena received two hours of English instruction nightly. This ac- counts for her excellent mastery of the language, al- though an occasional piece of slang will catch her off guard. Neither of these impressions were shared by Americans Abroad representative, Pam Protheroe, who spent the summer in Vitorio, Brazil. Pam felt a certain unity between people of all nations. I knew before that though customs may vary, people are the same, she said, but I proved to myself this sum- mer. We are all brothers. Maria will take home her impression of West's conservative atmosphere, and Lena's impression of the liberal system will travel back to Greece. But, the understanding Pam has gained will be shared by all who knew these foreign students.
