THE 1940 SENIOR OCCIDENT Tomorrow can tve dare to face 1 life Hint's new—« different place) If our world and niche should go, Could we surrive with what we know? Could we succeed by longing for The things ice had hut lion no more) Have we the right to tell the truth. To tire as rebels, wild as youth; To fight, have peace, to hate or love, To own the land or skies above? The only rights we Imre are Iliose Opinion gives us, I suppose. There is no safety, peace, or rest In I kings of substance U'f request; Hut in the port of shadows tie Ctusive things for which ice die; The things we feet hut never see In questions of Infinity. Ralph Step linn THINGS TO REMEMBER ? ALMA MATER m Proudly wares old West High's emblem Black and Orange fair, Floats triumphant in the breezes; l o dishonor there. Student days have fondest memories. Comrades here we stand, .45 our troth to Alma Mater Pledge we hand in hand. From thy halls dear Alma Mater H e at length must part. But thy memory shall not perish From one student's heart. Far away on life's broad highway All must fortune try; Still our loving hearts shall cherish Thoughts of Ihee, West High. Dr. Charles Holzwarth—Principal Melvin K. Coon ice-Principal Edward M. T R A F F I C “POP” We, the members of the athletic teams of West High School, wish to dedicate our section of this Senior Occident to John Pop Mills for the fine cooperation he has given and the great interest he has shown in us and our various endeavors. John Alden, John Barber, Willard Jacobs, Cort Miller (Captain and Manager), Carl L(Telman. SOCCER After losing the opening game 1-0 to Madison on a penalty kick, West’s soccer team swept through eight straight games to take second place behind Madison, who failed to lose a game. Paced by “Moose Hoobing, “Marty” Cummings, and Art Ciccarelli, who were chosen for All-Scholastic, the Occidentals took up where last year's team left off and made it twenty-three wins in the last twenty-six starts. Coach Herbert Smith can be proud of this record, and we look forward to his next year’s eleven. An interesting side-light is that ten of the eleven regulars were men- tioned on one of the All-Scholastic teams. Cicarelli, Arthur Simmons, James Hoobing, Carl Upson, Bob Middleton, George McHugh. Tom Bailey, William Zielinski, Boh Williams, Don Williamson ( Manager). From the time Jack Meatier scored the first basket against Washington till Tom Bailey dropped in the winning foul against Charlotte. West High was represented by one of the scrappiest teams seen here in the last decade. In Milling up a record of five wins and four losses, good enough for a third place tie, the Occidentals gained the respect of every team in the league. Not given a chance to win more than one game by pre-season forecasters, the veteranless team developed into a fast breaking, smooth passing machine under the patient coaching of Barney Smith. Kenneth Burke, John Buckley, Don Burton, Boh Upson, George Middleton, Robert Solan (Manager). With seven veterans returning, West High's outlook for 1939 was very bright. The Barney Smith coached team started fast by winning its first three games in true championship style. However, mid-season found them in a slump from which they couldn't quite recover until their last game, in which they badly trounced Washington. This victory gave West High a season's record of four wins and five losses, placing us in the first division in a fourth-place tie. BASEBALL RESERVES 1939 Alfred Brady. Louis Uterino. Richard Law. Living up to the high standards set by former swimming teams, the West High Mermen captured the city interscholastic title in a convincing manner. They also dominated the city championships with four first places, and the district sectionals with the same number of winners. Individual championships were taken by Don Agate in the 100 yard free style. Fred Becker in the 100 yard breast stroke.
