President Vice-President Secretary Council Represcrdatire Advisers When we of I he June Class first entered West High School il was with I lie feeling l hat a new adven- ture awaited us. And indeed it did. Our first year we spent largely in trying to conceal our strangeness and our feeling of total insignifi- cance. We tried to pretend that il was all old shill to us and failed dismally in the cll’orl. We en- deavored, without much greater success, to adopt the casual, nonchalant manner we so much ad- mired in the Seniors. Few of us ever stayed after two thirty-live. Consequently, we remained very much like strangers in a strange land. Our second year brought a gradual change in us individually and in the class as a whole. We learned part of our lma Mater and sang it with much gusto if not with understanding. We became affiliated with some of the extra-curricular activities and by so doing found that school could he made de- cidedly interesting. Through the medium of two class parlies, we came to know each other heller and to form many friendships. In other ways, too, we came to act more like a class unit, (iradually our hodge-podge existence disappeared and we became I he (-lass of June, 1937. But our first two years merely laid the groundwork for our last and most en joyed year. ow, in our more mature judgment, we came to look upon the faculty as somethings else than malicious «in- spirators against our peace of mind and our leisure. We saw I hem as a group interested primarily in preparing youth for the tough sledding that lies ahead. Some of them we came l know indi idtially and to value as friends and counselors. Friendships which had been developing through I he veal’s now crystallized and became very real. We finally learned the words of our lma Mater and found I hat there was meaning behind the words. nd mm we arc ready for graduation. We have learned much in our years at West and we have ab- sorbed much that wecannol exactly define hut that has added immeasurably I o our growth. Our hope now is that we may prove the faith manifested in us by our parents, teachers and friends has not been misplaced. Rulh Pearson JUNK S I JANUARY CLASS PROP II E C Y January 21, 1950 Dear Diary: W hat an event! hat a night! I he graduation class of January, 1957, held a reunion in the girls' gym, which certainly does not look anything like the one that stood when we were West High students. On the air-plane coming from Hollywood 1 met Louise Sahel, who is now script girl for RKO Radio Pictures, Phil Taylor, who is doing quite well as costume designer for MOM Studio, anil ay Stonehraker, whose third picture for Warner Brothers is to he released soon. Avery Zimmer was our pilot. s I entered the door, I overheard Betty Sul key telling Mary Harding of her grand experiences as a hotel hostess. Mary also had much to say about going into a dress shop business with Jean Mien and Arline Beilin. Through conversation I learned that Stuart Forest, an outstanding archi- tect, is making the plans for Leslie Weller’s new estate, and that Robert W illiams and Herbert (’lark have their law offices in the same building. 11 certainly seemed good to see Ruth King, ho is a movie critic for The ew York Times. Harold llarnish, sports editor of lUcCliicago A mw, and Robert Betette, ow ner of many champion race horses, seemed to be enjoying the cake made in Lorraine Leonard's bakery. Fveryone is proud of Jordon Taylor because he w as voted radio’s best male singer. Dorothy Clark, Betty Buckley, Jean O'Brien, and Ruth Lutz are happy office girls. In a corner, I met some of the members of our former Tri-Y. Marjorie Odell told us that sheen- joys her work as leader of the Y.W .C.A. I never thought that Jeanette Clark would be a nurse, because she was such a good writer. Frances llunn is happily married, and Janet Lake is piano teacher at the Eastman School of Music. Florence Leavenworth showed us her book for w hich she won the Pulitzer prize. Dorothy Neracker is the president of the W .C.T.I ., and Esther Miller is West Iligh s best geometry teacher. Among the married people were the former Misses June Beattie, Ruth Conklin, Ann Jesserer, Elsie Herbert, Lucille Hard!, Janet Kshehnnn, Emile Curtice, and Madeline NesbilL: also Francis alerio. Joseph Jones, Maurice W lialley, and Richard W'Aland. Nathan Kelne, I he news commentator, gave an interesting s|K ech. Jake Epner is another Ziegfeld; Joyce Amacher is a hair dresser: Leona Bandoly is a second daily s Parker; rline Haight can take a bow for being one of New York’s most popular models; and Margaret Lew is is also in New York, living on Park Avenue. W hat a coincidence! Sweet Simonnc Bergeron works behind a candy counter. Isabelle W atson, Ruth Pearson, Ethel Simes, Mary Tarllon, Robert Custer, Henry Boguski. Waller Wilzel, and Charles Parcells are all members of W est High's faculty. Ccncvicve Mitonelli. who is a buyer for Edwards’, told me that Betty Craves, Janet Lyons, and Norma 'Pucker are also employed at Edwards! How funny! Henrietta Partridge owns a chicken farm out in Henrietta. Remember Dizzy Dean.1 Well, Harry Faugh! has shattered all Dizzy's baseball records. Incidentally, Joe Smearing is the trainer of the St. Louis Cards. Many followers has Sarah Sosuloll', who writes ii'ice in the hnrlorn. Fred Newhall and Helen Cooper are both professors at the I . of R. Mary Jane Storm, who is starred on Donald Fisher’s variety program of the air, sang several songs for us, and Evelyn Rozzi of the concert stage also sang. W illiam Davis, who is manager of the Na- tional Clothing Store, was talking business with Althea Schmidt, who is lloor lady for Forman's. Imagine! Marion Roach, a gardener, presented a pot of flowers to the person she thought was most successful, who was none other than Dr. Cecil Westfall. Crant Fisher has become a famous loot- ball coach at Princeton, and Don Sawyer is bis right-hand man. Ruth Thoms, Doreen W illiams, «race Schroth, W illiam I)avis, and John t'llara are all employees of Eastman Kodak. Madeleine Wooek, a librarian, spent most of the evening chatting with MiceSlear, a dietitian, while Robert Bauerle and Donald Robertson, both prominent business men. got along nicely all evening. (iContinued on ftfii e ¥)) JUNE CLASS P R O P H E C Y It seems that when tin class ol'.lime, 1937. graduated, a number of the budding geniuses of the group bought out the new twenty story addition to the Empire State Building. .Most of the class took out oil ices and started in earnest on the road to success. Helen Shakeshaft and Jane Ladd, in company with Betty Jones and “Babe” Bettys, started the “Short Wave Beauty Shoppe.” “Babe” is particularly expert in applying mascara with a spray gun. Chuck Schafer, Dick Erbelding, and George Weinmann instituted “Know Your Ball and Chain W eek and had to rent an office from Bud Parcells in order to escape irrate and pacifically ardent honey-mooners. (Beinember. this is several years ahead of modern times.) Faith King and Alice Little have established “Bachelor Ciris' Hall” in which they entertain only members of their own sex. Alice amuses strangers by her inimitable imitations of Don Irwin. Grace Mills, Jean McGee, and Barbara Reisert have inaugurated a “Movie Lovers' Knitting Tea” series in which Grace does the honors as chief cinema re iewer. Jean and Babs teach knit ting and purling, respectively. Bulb Ober and Pauline Beuttel have an amateur broadcasting station IOT . and feature flute and soprano solos on the alternate half hours. Jim Small. (Jeorge Eike, and Slay ’Em Wray are captains of sturdy 60-foot tugs on the canal and bitter rivalry exists among them. They hired Dave W illiams, Milt Hubert us, and Bill Cham- bers as stokers, first class. The office whose gilt-edged, cut-glass panel is emblazoned with “K. P. Boucher, VI.D.” sur- rounds the person of none other than the genial Bob. Smilingly complacent, he doesn't care who gets sick as long as they come to him. His motto is, Don't get sick unless you can alford to pay me.” He employs Helen Casey as private nurse to the Doe sextuplets, who were born and raised under his watchful guidance. Madge Walker and Marie Powell sweep up the office and try to keep things tidy. It is generally rumored that he purchases most of his supplies from the “Bartholomay Bandage and Blanket Supply House” because of his friendship for the president. Bob Barllmlo- may, and the vice-president. Bob Smearing. The Schleyer Co. under the direction of Lucille is flourishing in its new headquarters on the fifth lloor of the annex. Betty Snyder, Shirley Gildea, I ra Mae Munro, Doris Mall, Clara DiBellis, Leah Culver. Thelma Devine, and Jean Welch compose a world famous octet, at present giving concerts in the Cosmopolitan Opera House, located in the annex of the building: and Jean Tagliamonte is acting as accompanist at the piano. JUNE CLASS PROPHECY Chuck ilkcs has founded a school of physical education on the fourth Hour and he tells us that his strength building class is l y far the most popular, mong his pupils he numbers Chuck Larzelere. Norm Lewis, Ronnie Johnston. Art Berg, and Ray Love. Flo Dembeck has placed her- sell under his tutelage to learn acrobatic tap dancing and is, he reports, making excellent pro- gress. Louise Cach and Sara Andoiino have enrolled in the adagio class and are enjoying them- selves immensely. A tuxedo shop de luxe has been opened by Johnnie DeMers and Rob O'Brien. They say they lirst attract customers by having Jane Smith and Jeanne Rayhill give a style show in the front window . If they (the prospects) l m k once, they’re as good as sold! An interesting exhibit was recently displayed by “Doe Topham and Yel 'Poole. It was en- titled “Fish through the Kitchen Sink” and consisted of rare specimens of pisces caught by strain- ing faucet water from Lake hilario. Later a baritone solo was sung by Bill Tew. It was rumored that Shirley McCandless and June Stevens haxe a pel shop at the end of the south corridor on the twelfth floor. Also well know u is the fact that they are visited every so often by Frw in Fellows and (!arl Rroia. who bring large bundles of cheese for the tame mice. “Hav Nash and Mary Ann Foley have teamed up, at the request of Mr. (iannett. and are now doing “Butch and the Lads for the Times-1 riion, for which they send up a copy from New York every night at seven. “Max draws Butch, and can Mary Ann draw the lads! The humane work of theS.P.C.B. M. I C O U N M S c C I L I With tlie opening of the 1936 soccer season West had lillle chance to duplicate the record of the strong 1935 team, which romped away with the silver cup. The task of rebuilding a team riddled by graduation was no new job to Coach Herbert Smith, who has tutored the Orange and Black through many a tough season. The let termen left from last year were Dick Williamson. Don Robertson, and William Cummings. Through the efforts of these men and bolstered by a crop of willing ma- terial. the squad weathered the first half of the campaign and then w ith experience liehind them drove forward to win four of the last five games and to tie the fifth.
