We shall wear well the gnrnmnt of responsibility that will s«i«ni rest upon our shoulders. Kn- shrined in our hearts are memories «if the last four years ami engraved in «mr minds is the learning the scho«il gave us that will s« t us upon tin Hoad of Life, lo- calise «if our brimming emotion we can only say, farewell t«i you and yours. Their memories I mentally retrace. Tin brassy clang of many a teacher's Ik’II, The running in the hall and on the stairs. The assembly cheers and jeers that loudly swell. The si now shall l e but memories of theirs. Oft did Hast High to their superiority yield. Their onslaught oft the opposing line lias broke. How jocund did they cheer their team afield! Or give the ump the raspberry when he spoke. The boast of scholarship, the pomp of prominence. And all that pride and pleasure don’t deny. Have alike that scholastic dominance The paths of glory lead but to West lligb. Tho storied record and animated photograph Cannot recall a | ast dcpartcd breath Yet still the passing years can never quaff Their tradition, even unto death. Some future student shall inquire thy fatc.- Haply some fellow graduate may say, Off liavc I seen him at the stroke of morning gong Dashing with hasty steps, to keep Mr Coon away. Thru the front door, on his lips a snatch of song. There within the shadows of yonder wcIMikc store. That displays a stock of tobacco and of sugar. His listless length at noon he always bore To sip a soda or nibble a hamburger. One morn they missed him in the locker room. At the frat bench, and under the old elm tree; In the halls his figure did not loom. Nor 'ii the campus, nor at the store was lie: For he had graduated with lion rs with his class ihI passed in reluctance into the world’s wide field. And .1 glance into time’s mirrored glass Will show his traditional spirit revealed. (In the Mirror) Here he lies upon the lap of Time A south, to students of the present unknown; Fair West High gave his life a rhyme. And oblivion claimed him for her own. Large was his bounty, his school spirit sincere; Heaven did a recompense as largely send: For, tho he knows it not. to this year His presence hovers in the school, and to the end No further seek his merits to disclose. Or draw his frailties from whence they rest. But keep his spirit alive in its repose. It is the soul and tradition of old West. The season might be called a good one, however, viewed in the light of the fact that the team was composed almost entirely of new men and it had to compete with teams that were fortunate enough to have several letter-men from the previous season still in school The triangle meets, three schools competing instead of two, were hig reasons why the team did not take more first places. In the first meet Madison nosed out West by a very few points. In the next, East following Madison’s lead, also won hv a slender margin. The schools represented in the third meet were Charlotte and Monroe who had previously defeated Madison and East. Theoretically our victory in this meet showed that West had a strong team, but Franklin’s easy victory in the final encounter provexi conclusively that West’s team was no better than mediocre. Everything taken into account, one first place, three second places, and a third place, the team did not make a bad showing for the season.
