W MCMXXVII West High School Rochester, New York PRESENTED BY THE SENIOR CLASSES OF Nineteen Twenty - Seven LjOREWORD ā€œHistory repeats itselfā€ā€”and we find West High returning to a truly year lxĀ ok. In omhming the two elasses for the production of a single annual, we hope that the hook may thus reflect the school rather than the individual group and prove of greater interest to the entire student Ixxly. With the inauguration of the double year ln ok, we feel that the success of the ā€œWā€ will, to a great extent, determine the suet-ess of the plan, as well as the style of future annuals. With this idea in mind we have tried to present the Ix-st. GLASS VOEM Above thee, all the stars of heaven shine And, at thy portals where the trend Of many passing feet Has left its fair, immortal mark The passing years bow down To kiss the grey moth-dust That lingers in the twilight after-glow And Ā« lings in soft form of what once was. Beyond thee, eventime pauses To see such homage paid As neither kings nor kingdoms can command And for a moment, that grim scythe is stilled That cuts away the years Like blades of golden wheat. Would that our hearts might sing The tale that builds about thy walls; A song with mellow notes That transforms thee all at onre Into a fair and lofty span Across the brink of time. —CiKKAl.l) BaUROCK. Started in at West High today. Queer place. Statues in the middle of the hall and kids liantr around them ’cause you have five minutes Iwtwccn | eriods. Didn’t wear any coat or sweater at first, hut decided I'd bettor after a few | criods. Was late toour c lass on account of 'Fed ami I were looking fur the elevator. Which we couldn't find, hut Ted’s big brother. Jack, told him the .Seniors used it. Ted is iu the same Lutin • lacs as I am ami a lot of other Kids from Madison. The ones from Jetferscm all sit over near tlie windows. Marjorie Ifarber is tlĀ e only one I can remember. We got out of school early so I went over to Madison to visit some of the old teachers.............. Saturday, Sortmlxr 15, 102 i. Mad my haircut today iu preparation for the Soph Dunce. Wore my new blue cheviot suit and new shoes, which are brown Oxfords. It was held at the school. Sonic of the fellows took girls, hut I think that is nonsense. There arc a bunch of seniors who walk around tin halls with girls, and tlie look | er- fectly sappy, led ami me not to tlic dance early, and we stood around with the rest of the fellows near the orcliestrn. They had a swell drummer! Ilrucc and Jane startetl to (Inner and some of tin other fellows to Ā . I darn ed with Sara Swanson and Lucille omig and a lot of other girls from Madison. There was a dinty entertainment, so Ted and 1 Nit in tlie back of the assembly and laughed. Iona Davis was in cluirge and Mila Rankin and tlil Maloney took part. There were only a few from Jefferson in the show, which were Dorothy Weaver, Cliallirc Swart and AlievĀ Schneider. I think, which only goes to show which is the lietter school. It was almut a fellow coming into a railroad train, which was a row of chairs, and Viola Rankin strummed a ukulele and sang ā€œCornin' Down from liangor. The eats were good hut not enough of them. 'I’lie party ended at II o’clock. I wanted to take Sara Swanson home, but Freddie Connors had prohahly asked her. (Continurd on page } 110 Sum pages from tin Ā«liary of B. n girl in tin June Ā«lass. I!W7, which reveal some very had gra miner and composition forms, and also give some interesting comments upon various topics: Saturday, Morrmbfr 19?$. 1-ist night was the Hass sophomore party at sclmnl and I got there ulxtut quarter after eight and found hardly anybody there. They had (i ed the corridor up quite nioe and dow n at the girls end there was a sofa and some hairs and some rugs and s« nĀ«e floor laiu|Ā s. All of which looked very nice and all the girls were there sitting on the sofa or trying to and ao after I had taken otfmycoat and hat I joined them- The l ovs all staved ilown at the other end at tin piano by that funny looking statue with the sj ear in its hand. After about twenty minutes someone said there was an entertainment in the nsscmtdy so we all went in and Helen and Catherine ami Margaret and Jane and I sat in one row. And in the row lieliind us were same lx vs that Jane said were the Hartman twins hut she wasn't sure and they made such funny remarks that I laughed all through the performance which was quite dumb nnd all in pantomime. It was n sort of a play where they didn't Speak anything nnd one boy made love to another hoy dressed up in slieet and a queer looking head-dress Jane said that tin girl was Charles Pritchard and that the l oy was Paul Showers ami that the other boy was Stephen McKay but I haven't the slightest idea who any of them are. in fact 1 never heard of them before, which proUiltly they're just some of those queer |M op|e from Madison. After that we had darning which Was alumt nine o'clock and tin orchestra was just divine and ahuoat as good as the one we had at our Senior party when we left Jefferson but the Ijoys wouldn't Ā«lance but just all stood around the wall and grinned nnd as I was just Ā«lying to have someone ask me because the orchestra was really wonderful I ,st.irlcĀ«l Ā«laming with Helen. Which quite a l««t of oilier girls Ā«lid too and then Donald Walker started to dance and I could hardly keep my eyes • Ā«IT from him even if lie Ā«lid come from Madison because he is the Vice-President of the class and Ā«lances very well. And Theodore Kelly starteĀ«l dancing too. who is the president of tlx class, so after a time the flĀ«xĀ«r was quite crowded. Ami I danced with quite a lot of boys including Carlton Thayer from Jefferson who really would dance quite well if his feet weren't so extremely l««ng. I also lanĀ« ed with a lx).v from Madison who haĀ«l a large nose rolled Joe Wilson and In was quite u nice lĀ«oy ami I would have liked to have Ā«lanced with him only a rather obnoxious r« v dy fr« m Mmlison called Raymond Poster cut in and I just had to Ā«lame t«« lĀ«e indite lĀ ul hr really nasa In-tter Ā«lamer than arlton Thayer even if lie Ā«1x1 come from MaĀ«lison. About half past ten they t««lĀ«l u t«« form in line to get our dninlys which were the Ā«leS'Crt ami some •likes. nd I went and lia 1 my fortune told by a man that Mr. Hall our faculty advisor, said was a pro- fessional fort urn teller but who turned out to lx merely a lioy from Madison Ā«idled Tony somebody ami after that father came with the cur to take me ami Helen home Ā nl I wished he hadn't because then was a boy that I think wanted to take me home wlto was quite liamlxmieeveii if lie Ā«lid Ā« nine from MaĀ«li- son. which I believe lie Ā«lid. Took It - to (lie Junior Flay tonight. She is tin girl I mot the other day. She mines from Jeffer- vm, hut jche is certainly wonderful. It is not such a had school. Asked Imt to go yesterday, nnd felt weak all over while 1 was doing so. I wasn't scared, hut my knees Iwgan to tremble. Anyway she accepted ami we went tonight. Got a ride with Ferry Ksten, who has a Junior license. Had to wait a Unit a half hour at her house, and thought I was going to he late, hut when she come tripping down the stairs, it didn't much matter. We had seats near the front with Betty Wagner ami Art Sickles. Thelma Keefe sat near us. and applauded very loudly when (tile came on the stage. He was a thug. I guess, though he didn't seem very tough to me. Ilmwnell Jamison was a |K lieeman, so we mil him Lnhienus tlie lieutenant. Addie Clark was also in it, though I don't can much fiĀ r him for lie roincs from JelTerson. It was a mys- tery play, nnd Stan Wright tried to shoot Kay Ryan, Imt he couldn't get the gun Olit of the safe, so he step|)ed up and took a vicious cut at her, which missed lier by two feet. Jim Shedd, wIhi is president of tin- class although Ik- came from Jefferson, almost blew his arm off later when he took it from the safe and it went off in his liands. Bethine Coe was the heroine and she and Charlie luid a finale, and 11------ leaned over to me and I felt foolish, cause I knew that Ted was sitting right lichind me with Fete Braal and Line Burrows. Miss —. who is IV s F.nglish tcndicr, turned around and a skill her if slic’d hum led iu her themes. You should have I ward II look .it her. (Continual on nyr ā–  I 114 Saturday. April Si. VJiĀ i Las night was the date of I lie Junior | lay and I went with J.. which Ā«as really the first time I have gone out with him and he is very nice. I guess I must have ! een quite foolish to think that the people in Madison were inferior to those in Jefferson for J. lias liair that is awfully pretty and it is inclined to curl tĀ« o. Anyhow I enjoyed the play a lot which was the Seven Keys to BsMjiatc. a mystery play. We aat right in hack of Miss--------iomittrd by thr editor ) who is my Kugli.sh teacher ami In I ween the acts she hail the nerve to turn around and ask mr if I was getting any lietter in my ««impmitii.n work hut I just gave her a cool look and I guess that put her in her place. Well the play was very exciting being all altoul a mayor of a city who stole some money anil hid it in a safe on top of a mountain in the middle of winter so that his trusty man could route lip and get it only the trusty man confided in a girl. Myra Thornhill, who planned to double cross them all but Charles Pritchard who was the hero held them all up and saved the money for the heroine who was Bet bine Coe but Stanley Wright killed Myra Thornhill who w.k Catherine Ryan, which was very funny. It seems that tlĀ e only gun which had a blank cartridge was in the safe and Stanley was to open the safe only the door stuck so he couldn’t and lie went over and hit Myra and she fell over dead which rather spoiled the effect but the play was very exciting. Roliert Kuz- mayer was just too cute for words ns a crazy man. His acting was very convincing because lie acted very natural. Helen Rrandt Ā«screamed so that I had cold chills all night and Jean I)ix made an excellent w ife for Alden lark but they always did go around together. Roliert Redfern and (iile Miller really were very exciting and so Ā«as Paul Showers and Roliert Mailman who was a perfect scream as the deputy. And tleu it all turned out in the end that they were only n company of actors and nobody was shot :it all so it was quite a comedown and they lurried out the lights just when Charles Pritchard went to kiss Retinue Coe but I leaned up against J. just the same so it was very rrmantie even if you couldn't sec it all very well. And then in the end you find out it was only a l k that this aullior w.is writing .Ā« it was all very confusing and they gave the girls flowers and some of the boys big calla lilies. fterwurds J. took me over to Mike’s and I had a West High Special but I regretted it .is soon as I had ordered it because I know that nns why he said he was on n Ā«liet and only took a glass of water but it was really delightful and I Iio|h lie asks me to go t«« his fraternity dance which luippens next Saturday night. They had a olleginte Ford (only it didn't come on the stage and Magro had to smoke a big black cigar. He didn't look so good, but he was better tlum Fisher, who was supposed to smoke two coffin nails hut only held them in his hands. They brought a dog on the stage anil it caused so much commotion that Sickles took it right out. And Kdnar Manley said a few ā€œdamns.ā€ whereupon II thought it one of the best plays she had heard. Hut the playitself was really delightful ami all about a man and his wife who were sup| oscd to be married and they had twins in college and a son who was in New York City who was engaged. The fattier and mother were Margaret Krb and Paul Showers aud the twins were Carl l-'isher and Edna Manly, who always spells her name Ednae and Art Sickles was the older son who was engaged to Helen I dihett as Ikigmnr Carrol. Mary Helen Socck was the crahby edd grandmother and she certainly was a real type. Helen Mann was .Inlia Murdoch and her sou was Dnrwood Hill whose name was Kona Id and every other minute Helen would say. ā€œCome, Itunniild.' in a very otfcelnl voire which just kept me laughing continually. Tliere were some awfully good spots in the play $m h .is in the first act where the twins came home anti the whole cast was on the stage and not one person forgot his Ā« ue or got in tlic other's way which was really remarkable for an nmature group. Carl Fisher was just adorable but then lie came from Jefferson which was to I - expected although I think I like J. much lietter. nd the dresses Edna Manly wore were just simply ravishing and I could not go to sleep for thinking of all the pretty things she wore in the sec ond net which was quite atl and made me cry ami I notii-ed J. was winking a little hilt then I think hr did if just to not make me feel embarrassed anyway he certainly was nice and wlicn Art Sickles • aim- out and made love to Helen Eobbett I leaned up against .1. and be didn't even move away like he did at the Junior play which shows that he certainly is a full.fledged senior. Trust in Clod and keep your powder dry. The cost oft-times takes away the relish. Never too much for a good thing. A shut mouth keeps me out of strife. Modesty cannot be taught, it is born. I count not the votes of the fickle mob. 129 For The Best Equipment for Out of Door Sports IN THE POWERS BUILDING H crantom’s and 334-336 Main St. Last SPORTING GOODS SHOPS Macgregor and Imported GoII Goods A.
