This book is our last effort—our fare- well—our “ave atque vale.” But we are keenly sensible to its imperfections; that which we would have done we have left undone, while that which we would not have done we have done. However, dear reader, gentle or other- wise, judge this book kindly, more by what we intended to do than by what we have done.
