In the cold month of February 1943 a group of thlrty n1ne 1nsp1red grade school graduates stampeded up to the gates of West hrgh school Thrs added a sparklmg color to th1s superror 1n stltute of hrgher learnmg It wasnt unt1l the latter part of 1946 that SIX new students were added to the roster boost1ng IIS total to fortv f1V8 classmen They are Irvmg Portman Maxme Yee Elrzabeth Rlchardson Berny Gertz Emma gene Odom and Jerry Schneler Thrs new group was soon rated as f1rst class freshles Yes hall passes chapel trckets elevator passes gym passes and many other varletres of passes were lssued to the 1nnocents Of course they were accepted w1th a smrle and to th1s very day Pete Mllne and Sarah Jane Rooke are lookmg for the so called elevator shafts Golng through n1nth grade w1thout much dlf flcultv the class was honored when Anna Mae Nelson won a cert1f1cate of mer1t for a showcard pamt draw1ng 1n the annual art cornpetrtlon at Plttsburgh Already these so called freshles were show1ng thelr talents The band and orchestra recelved a good portlon of the class Harold Evert fbetter known as the blg boy J Gertrude Umansky Anna Mae Nelson and Jerry Schneler gave f1n1sh1ng touches to the 1nstrumental course needed tutors who were very hard to obtam The school dec1ded that lt was tlme to go down to the freshmen l1st Gertrude Umanskv was chosen as head tutor and Anna Mae Nelson as asslstant tutor Now the puplls were sure to rece1ve superlor ass1stance Gettmg accustomed to school hfe one usually could see Helen Russlan M1Cl1HlSkV qurckly pacmg the corrldors w1th a roll of t1Ck6tS con v1nc1ng her customers that they were 1n store for a good game Helen always reported w1th great success and w1th a gleam 1n her eye Any one could see she had done her good deed for the day The Senlor Junlor and Sophomore Choral clubs recelved Emmagene Odom Sarah Jane Rooke M ry Parasson Berny Gertz Phyllrs Preto Irvmg Portman Donna Monroe and Betty Ware In 1946 Betty Ware plaved a gypsy 1n The Marrrage of Nanette Bettv was later chosen to s1ng a solo 1n the Messlah Wh1Cll was g1ven durmg the Chrrstmas season 1n 1946 Under the leadershlp of Tony Carretta and h1s asslstant 1ony Catalano the West hlgh traffic squad led an aggresslve force w1thout a mlshap Wlth the commg of the tennrs season West opened 1ts mdomltable attack ln the CIIYS front Vards RCS1St1Hg all compei 1t1on Irv1ng Portman and Hobert DHVIS helped take a c1tv champlon sh1p Irvmg Portman played 1n the state tourney 1n 1945 and 1946 at Columbus By th1S tlme the role of lower classman was forgotten and the status of upper classmen be came a reahty Off1cers for 12B were chosen as follows N1Ck Wasylko presldent Betty Ware VICE presldent Gertrude Umansky secretary and Anna Mae Nelson treasurer Student Counc1l was reorgamzed 1n the sprlng of 1946 Donna Monroe was elected as repre sentatlve from Room 415 at the flrst electlon and was later elected v1cepres1dent of the councll Before offrcers were elected Donna was chosen as presldent pro tem of the newlv formed councll It was a remarkable class Flve of our mem bers Jo1ned the ranks of Nat1onal Honor Socrety Betty Ware Jams Ryan Anna Mae Nelson Gert rude Umansky and Donna Monroe Margaret Sue Getz Mabel Lenore H1nkle Oll1ce Brown L1ndsey Stewart F Plotter ROSHIIS Suttles and Booker T Wh1taker completed therr h1gh school course 1n summer school and w1ll re c?1vf54the1r d1plomas w1th the graduatmg class o 1 7 Frederlck O Chr1st1an Charles A Goepfert Harvey Robert Israel Herbert M Mermelsteln and Rlchard L Roll completed thelr hlgh school course 1n the armed SSFVICBS Sherwm Rebeck completed h1s work 1n nlght school In the fall semester of 1946 N1ck Waslyko was re elected presldent Gertrude Umansky VICE presxdent Helen M1chalsky secretary and Jerry Schneler treasurer Mar1on Joseph won a typmg certrflcate and Imogene Selman gave her talents to the sw1m mmg team Expert craftsmen that w1ll no longer serve West are Thomas Pappas Lou1s Suto Clarence A Dorsev Jr and D1ck Schafer They perfected the1r talent so well that one could hardlv tell the d1fference between the1r work and that of an expert Today 1n th1s assembly we have the honor to present to you the names of the returned vet erans who have so courageously preserved our freedom so that we mav contmue to enjov the Amerlcan way of l1fe Thev are Homer B1v1ns Tony V Catalano and Pete Mrlne Wlth the hour of graduatlon descendmg upon us the January class of 1947 w1ll long remember the days whlch we spent at West hlgh We hope that many other graduatmg classes w1ll f1nd the future as br1ght as we found It JERRY SCHNEIER In behalf of the January Class of 1947 Q4 Q ' 1 7 ' . . . 1 . , . , F , . .
