T iniililii T T 1 is li Class History By DEAN LOWREY ln February, I937. a handful of Treshies boarded a Train labeled The WesT Express for a four-year journey. Among These sojourners, Percy Fleming showed signs of greaT promise when she made The honor roll in her firsT rnonTh on The Express. Before They knew iT, an eighTh of The Trip was over, for The conducTor, Mr. J. W. Flood, came Through The coach. saying The engine would have To be changed, Thus necessiTaTing a delay. ATTer a very shorT vacaTion, or so iT seemed, They reboarded The Train To conTinue The journey. James Garcia, anoTher of The Travf elers, showed skill aT woodwork, when The birdhouse he had builT, won a prize in a conTesT. So, aT The end of The TirsT year on The Express. The Travelers adapTed Them- selves To The sway of The coaches and were ready for The Trip To conTinue. The sophomore year began slowly, buT iT soon gaThered momenTum. Helen Schuelein, anoTher member of The group, was named The ouTsTanding sophomore girl baskeT- ball player on The Express. ln The same sporT, Two of The boys oT The group, Sanford Johnson and Paul ReiTenbach, played on The WesT reserve Team. JusT when The Trav- elers had begun To wonder if The Train would ever sTop, The conducTor came Through The coach and explained ThaT The Train musT sTop so ThaT The boiler could be filled wiTh waTer. They were only Too glad To geT ouT and sTreTch The kinks ouT of Their muscles and geT a breaTh of fresh air. BuT afTer whaT seemed a very shorT Time, The Train's whisTle called-and They hasTily reboardecl The Express To conTinue Their journey, unTil The nexT January sTop. The Third year on The Train sTarTed wiTh a bang. Helen Schuelein, The female Hank LuiseTTi, played on The Fabre Femmes, a Team of girls from WesT. BuT even wiTh Helen's sTellar playing The Femmes were defeaTed by The SouTh Akron Church of ChrisT girls in a close game, I3 - IZ. This semesTer WesT again sTarTed a STudenT Council and Percy Fleming helped To organize iT. A very busy half year wenT by and Then The Train pulled u-p again Tor iTs regular June layover. When iT sTarTed up again. Jim GarliTz, anoTher passenger, was playing on The TooTball Team. Aided by Jim, The Team redeemed a disasTrous season by beaTing NorTh, 2-0, in a big upseT. The new STudenT Council wenT inTo session Tor The firsT Time, and when The smoke had cleared away Percy Fleming had been elecTed To The ExecuTive Council, Some Time laTer in The journey, Gerald HamilTon and Dick Ridle were elecTed inTo The Hi-Y. As The fourTh year of Travel goT under way, This band of veTeran Travelers decided To asserT iTselT and organize, for iT was now a senior class. On March l, The class officers were elecTed. Dean Lowrey was elecTed presi- denTg Bill Szeles, vice-presidenT: Dick Ridle. Treasurer: and Helen Taylor, secreTary, AT This Time only four sers of Twins could be found in The Train, buf This senior class conTribuTed To The pairs, for Angeline and Caroline AssenTi were among Them. BuT misforTune sTruck when Mr. R. J. Beichly, The coach on The Express, lefT To Take a posiTion on The Akron U. Train. BuT every cloud has a silver lining, and The Express's silver lining maTerialized inTo The shape of Mr. William ScheidT, who Took Mr. Beichly's place. HalTed in June To swiTch engines, The class began To realize ThaT The end of The Trip was in sighT. The Express puT on exTra speed as iT sTarTed on The lasT lap of The journey. During This final sTage of The journey, The Hi-Y elecTed George KnighT and Tom Hoagwood. Also, The NaTional Honor SocieTy elecTed some new members and Percy Fleming. Dean Lowrey, and Elvira Hord were honored by being received inTo membership. Amy Ware, who Transferred from BarberTon, was also a member of This socieTy. AT lengTh, Travel-worn and weary, The class members ended Their journey on The plaTform oT January, I94-l. As They waved goodbye To The Express. They felT relieved To know The journey was over and yeT sorry ThaT They musT leave Their Traveling companions in oTher classes. Then These companions of Tour years parTed from each oTher, some To find employmenT in The viciniTy and some To board Trains for oTher more disTanT poinTs.
