X- ... . 7 Fred Brock Lawrence Brewster XVilliam Kneale Carl Burnham FRED BROCK-captain of the 1927 track team, ran the mile and the relay. LAXVREXCE BREXVSTER-heaved the discus 111.1 feet for first place at the city meet. XVILLIAM KNEALE-ran the 100 yard dash and the relay. CARL BVRNHAM-scored XVest's lone point at the state meet held at Columbus. Track The 1927 track team had a fairly successful season considering that Fred Brock was the only veteran hack. The inter-class meet, arranged hy llr. Boots, was a thriller in which the seniors nosed out the juniors after the latter had led most of the meet by a score of 6012 to 50' 3. Many good prospects were found in this meet, and most of the events were run off in good time. The sophomores placed third with 22 points, and the freshmen came in last with ll points. The first official meet was the Ohio Relays, held at Columbus, where the best teams in Ohio meet to participate. ln this meet YVest entered only one team, composed of lVoolcock, lVolfe, Scudder, and Burnham, and pulled down a second in the S80 yard relay. The next meet, held at llassilon, was a triangular affair among Klassilon, Akron South, and YVest. The result of the meet was: llassilon first, South second, and Wvest third. lnahility to score in the field events, where the cowhoys scored only one point, cost XVest the meet. Surprising all, lvest won the half-mile and placed second in the mile and a half relays at Lakewood. A shield was awarded for winning the former event, and the following hoys received medals for their efforts: Brock, Burnham, Yvoolcock. Snyder, Sagadensky. Scudder, and Kneale. Klay l-l the team engaged in another triangular meet with Akron lfast and Akron Central. The meet was close all the way. By winning the relay. lfast man- aged to nose out Central and win the meet -l-7 to -l--l. The events were run off in a downpour of rain. ! I' ' ' 'WT :: i 1 l9Sl

Basketball For the first tournament game YVest played Ravenna, the the Trolly League Champs, and defeated them 27 to lo. Fl'l1IT1 f the first lvest had no trouble in scoring, and Ravenna only threat- ened once in the third quarter when it made 5 points before XVest got started. Tobin was high point man. XVest defeated Garfield in the second tournament game 24 to V 1 10. This is the second time YVest has defeated Garfield this year. ' As it was Garfield, who put VVest out of the tournament last year. YVest thus was avenged. The score at the half was lb to 3 XVest. Tobin starred for lVest, while Popeka and Davis starred for , Garfield. lVest defeated Lakewood for the second time this year 36 to 20. The cowboys showed good form and played a good game, while Lakewood, not being used to a large floor. was somewhat handi- capped. lVest lost its only game of the season to South in the semi- finals of the tournament by a 22 to 18 score. The cowboys put up a good fight. but they could not win. XVest lost to South, the Stu- dents are proud of the team that has won 20 games in one season. YVARD KANAGA-ran on VVest's relay team. CYRIL YVOOLCOCK-captain elect of the 1928 track team, ran the -H0 yard dash and the mile relay. GLEN HOLWI'-placed in the high jump at the city meet. Track At the qualification meet held at hlassilon April 15th, NVest placed fifth, scoring 1212 points in the track events. Salem won the meet with -ll points. Canton Xlc- Kinley placed second. Carl Burnham, Cyril VVoolcock, and Fred Brock, placing in the 100 yd., -H0 yd., and mile runs, respectively, were the only VVest boys to qualify for the state meet. At the state meet held at Columbus, where the greatest assemblage of track ath- eletes in Ohio is brought together, Carl Burnham scored VVest's lone point, placing fifth in the 220 yard dash. Columbus Central won the meet: Lakewood placed second. Twenty-two former records were hroken. The city meet held June -lth, was a thriller in which East managed to nose out Central hy five points. South placed third, Vvest fourth, Garfield fifth, and North last. The meet was close all the way. Up to the last two events, the discus and relay, it looked as though the Central VVildcats were going to win the meet for their second consecutive year. However, by placing men in the discus and winning the relay, East pulled the meet out of the fire. The 100 and 220 yard dashes were hitterly contested by Carl Burnham and Pokorosky of East. Burnham won the 220 yd., and finished second in the 100. The 4-10. the most widely watched event of the group. was won by Sauer CSouthl, Kern QCentrall was second, and YVoolcock Uvestl, third. The race was very close. By sprinting the last 20 yards, Sauer won from Kern by 5 yards. Tim Brewster upset the dope when he won the discus with a heave of 110 feet. Qther results were: Glen 1-lout tied for third in the high jump, and Kenneth Gambee placed fourth in the high hurdles. VVoolcock made second in the half mile. and West's relay team, third. The following men by placing in the meet were awarded their letters: VVoolcock, Burnham, Brock, Kneale, Kanaga, Hout, Sagadensky, and Brewster. The team held its hanquet at Spindler's lnn at which Cyril lvoolcock was elected next year's captain. l99l
