We, the Class of 1954, feel it fitting that our Foreword- which is likewise our final word-as we take leave of our beloved West High School should be a few reflections on this our life in the land of the free. . Freedom is so free in America that, like running water, we take it dangerously for granted. V Most of us will never wholly appreciate it, but we pause here at least to take cognizance of what is perhaps our most fundamental freedom-our American public school system. Here no caste, no race, no creed is denied the opportunity to learn. Education, we feel, is the fundamental freedom because without the ability to read an application for employment, a prayer book, a poem, or write a letter to a friend, a signature on a deed, without a mind released from the chains of ignorance how could the other freedoms, from want and from fear, freedom of speech or even to worship, ever be understood in the fullness of their blessings. We may not fully appreciate our freedoms, but we do cherish them enough to be fervently grateful that by the grace of God we were born in America . page two
