Y. ln IS37 he TaughT a privaTe school aT Willoughby, Ohio, and enTered The sophomore class oT WesTern Reserve College in IS38. The Tollowing year he was chosen as head oT The WesTern Reserve Teachers' Seminary in The neighboring village OT KirTland, a posiTion which he held Tor eighT years. On July Zi, l842, he married ElizabeTh W. Russell, who, herselT, had a remarlcable career, TirsT, in helping her husband in his worlc Tor The blind and, aTTer his deaTh, as superinTendenT aT BaTavia, in his place, and as assisTanT dean aT Oberlin College. Though he obTained a diploma in I846, he never enTered upon regular pracTice. AT abouT The same Time, inTluenced largely, iT seems, by Henry Barnard, who visiTed Ohio in I843 and again in IS46, he engaged in a varieTy oT educaTional acTiviTies. ln i845 he gave insTrucTion in whaT is usually considered The TirsT Teachers' insTiTuTe held in Ohio, Though he had, in I843, organized and conducTed a similar insTiTuTion aT KirTland. During I846 he began The publicaTion oT The Ohio School Journal, which he conTinued To publish unTil IS49, when iT was combined wiTh The School Friend. In I847 he was appoinTed superinTendenT of schools aT Columbus, Ohio, an oTTice creaTed largely Through The inTluence oT Henry Barnard and The TirsT oT iTs kind in The Middle WesT. In The process oT classiTying The pupils he was led To organize The TirsT public high school in Columbus and one oT The TirsT in The sTaTe. While conTinuing To publish The Ohio!
