This is being done so that you may visualize the process of education paralleled to the construction of an airplane. That of the hlueprint stage in the defense industry is compared with the sophomore classes ot the high schools. .lust as the drattsman must outline his ideas along with ac-, cepted theories of others who have gone before, to formulate the best possible method for the building procedure, so will the resourceful student talce advantage of all the opportunities offered which will better prepare him for the next steps ol his education. Every detail which goes into the building of a sturdy plane must be as perfect as the construction of the learning material obtained in the initial years of education. Our 410 Juniors have learned, by now, that it is their respon- sibility to act as the intermediate cog in the wheels of progress. They are now acquainted with the intricate problems facing a young student. Having capably adjusted themselves to the senior high curriculum, and with a somewhat clearer concept of their vocational purpose, this group becomes the deciding point for either a successful or unsuccessful school career. By a wise choice of the various materials before him and direct application of the fundamental principles taught, he is now adequately prepared to go on. X201 -WW., -, '. ' I .4 - K. .Q 5 1 , . The grounci woric has been compieteci. It is now a matter of testing workmanship and ability, a Hight in search of a new ven- ture worthy of its merit. No longer can there be time for preparation'-cioing over what has been clone. The plane cannot be rebuilt, nor replaced, only repaired and added to. So it is with graduation. Once your school life has been left behind it cannot be recaptured. Those worries of homework, grades, activities, or responsibilities are now but memories of the building process. Your temporary aim has been fulfilled, but now you must start out again with new ideals, and a new purpose. Utilizing the information given you, and keeping alive that spark of ambition which keeps the mind ever in search of greater knowledge-these are the qualities that education tries to instill in our youth. .... Under these circumstances the Cowboys managed to salvage hut one game of the nine played. The blocking position was practically vulnerable with first the Veteran, Tom Benyon, then his substitute, B013 Byeriy, going out for the season with injuries. Jack Hobbs, ver- satiie bacic. was declared ineiigihie due to the semester ruling. Scholastic diffi- culties of two icey men kept the iine uncertain. A capacity crowd, under the lights at Newaric, watched the powerful Wild- cats conquer a less-experienced Cowboy eleven 19-6 in the season opener. The next weeic found them pitted against an even more explosive aggregation at Middletown and, aided by Harry Hopwood's great icicicing, achieved a morai victory hy holding the Middies to a 15-0 win. From here on inclement weather played havoc with VVest's schedule. Two muddy teams and two big zeros were the result of the East game. Then October 10 brought the only glory captured by the West team when it rose to victory heights for the first. and oniy time, to defeat Lima South 12-0 at Lima. Less said, the better, about Northis 51-6 swamping. Different scenery failed to change the Buckaroos' iucic when they dropped their first home game to South 15-0. More mud and more gloom in the form of a 7-0 defeat at the hands of Dayton Roosevelt. City Champion Central was next, and the Buff and Brown ieii before them 15-0. The Terriers of Aquinas brought the season to a close hy administering the fourth 15-0 loss to the Westerners. The failure of Lady Luci: to smiie on them, pius the absence of the star players, proved to he the two hairs which broke the Cowboys' hacic i921 HAIL THE CHAMPIONS! Hail the 1942 City League Champions! Vvith two league games remaining on the schedule the Cowboy hasehaliers had wrapped the city league crown securely away as they stood alone and un- defeated on top of the standings with eightconsecutive victories. Rated as one of the hest balanced teams in the history ot the school Coach Williams' boys lived up to all expectations when they were victorious in sixteen of the first seventeen games played. The solitary loss was suffered at the hands of Lancaster 4-2. The league teams found the high riding Cowboy outfit too strong to cope with as they all howed before them. East opened the city play and the Bengals were promptly roped and tied when Boh Swisher entered the Hail of Fame hy hurting a brilliant no-hitter. Swisher along with the tine southpaw arm of Dick Hoover proved a pitching duo that was unbeatable. Neither had a loss charged against them in the seventeen games. The red-hot Westerners continued in the district tournament as they turned on the heat to smother Grandview 18-0, defeated a stubborn Aquinas nine 4-2 and hen handed Bexley their first loss by winning 17-1. North was to he met later for the district crown with the Cowboys heavy favorites. ,,-X. Proof of power possessed hy the Bucks can he found in the scoring column. West scored 189 runs to their opponents, 3.5! An average score of ll to 2. The highest score was recorded against Hillsboro when Vvest won 24-4. There was little wonder why the Westerners were rated as one of the strongest teams in the state. t93i VARSITY BASKETBALL ll you don't succeed the first time try, try again. This famous motto was the formula which the Varsity Baslceteers followed so implicitly, and as a result turned a poor season's heginning into a glorious ending. The inexperienced cagers dropped three ol their first four games, losing to the Alumni 28-25, Lancaster 27-25, and Springfield 28-17, while proving the victor over Academy, 58-25. The Cowhoys rode victoriously over Logan 21-20 and Welston 52-20, only to he thrown from their steeds and fall helore the onslaughters ol Nelsonville 50- 16 and Chillicothe 40-16. The city league inaugural with the North Polar Bears was a battle, hut the outcome was disappointing when the Northerners edged the Buckaroos 55-29. Central tool: a 42-25 verdict and South was on top of a 50-29 score before the Cowboys got tired ol the pushing-around, and retaliated against the Terriers of Aquinas with a record-breaking 68-57 swamping. The 68 points, accumulated hy West, hrolce all previous city league records. East lelt the sting of the rejuvenated cagers and was defeated 51-25. Sweet revenge was had when the hoys opened the second round with a convincing win over North, 45-56. Central toolc the wind out of the West victory sails long enough to capture a 56-28 win. Then, the upsets of upsets occurred. The undefeated South Bulldogs invaded the West gym, boasting a 12-game winning strealc and the Buff and Brown slapped the baffled canines to the rhythm of a 59-26 scoring session. Aquinas was defeated in an overtime 56-51 and East brought the regular season to a close by bowing to the Westerners 41-25. The varsity ended in a third place deadloclc with North in the city league. The boys were in high spirits as they journeyed to Delaware for the District Tour- nament hut lost them when Newarlc power-housed West 41-17. The season record stood at nine wins and ten losses for a percentage of .475. Jaclc Underman and Bill Richards were chosen on the First team of the all- high while Captain Diclc Hoover won a herth on the second team. i941 RESERVE BASKETBALL From small acorns grow the mighty oaks. This phrase tits the Reserve Bas- ketball team like a glove. The squad forms the hasic training for the future varsity stars, and this idea has been carried out very successfully. Although the hoys found the victory formula hut four times during their fifteen scheduled games they did show the FIGHT and determination character- istic of West teams. The greatest handicap was their laclc of height and this prohlem dealt many serious blows to the team during the course of the season. The quartet of victory was achieved over the Alumni 22-16: Lancaster 54-175 East 25-20: and a fine upset over a strong Central tive 21-20. The boys lost many heart-lorealcers, including three games hy one point. The Reserves ended fifth in the city league. They tallied 505 points to their opponents' 540, which provides statistical proof on the closeness of their contests. The 54 points scored against Lancaster was the high-water marlc in the offensive department while their hest defensive effort was against the Alumni when the latter was held to 16 markers. Forward Jim Bell was the high scorer with a total ot 87 points, followed hy Richard Carter with 65. Gene Shade and Jim Stewart were next with 58 and 48. respectively. George Williams, varsity coach, who also doubled as the Reserve tutor, de- veloped many laoys which he will count on heavily for next year's varsity team. i951 TRACK Carrying the traclc banner for West this year was at fine group of boys deter- mined to give all for the Cowboy cause. More than 55 candidates in all answered Coach Dale Rose's call, although most of them were green and inexperienced. As a result most of the early meets proved to he only a testing grounds for the prospects. ln the first meet of the year only one point decided the winner and West giasscissed it as they defeated the South Bulldogs 71M to 702 at Magly Field pri 15. A few days later North journeyed here and proceeded to hand West its first loss when the Polar Bears scored an 86 to 54 victory. Donn Crcslrj' .md Cr -Q Sheward will he remembered for their fine showing although their performance failed to push West over the victory rim. ' On April 18 the track team entered in the powerful Newfark Relays at Newark and finished twelfth. Then on May 6 came the annual City League meet held at Ohio State Uni- versity. The West hoys placed fourth for the second straight year as they scored 28 points. They showed up well in the relays and hurdles hut lost out when they failed to score in the field events. The greatest achievement of the traclcsters was accomplished on May 8 when they defeated a highly touted Bexley squad 66-52 on the losers' traclc. The sprints were run hy Donn Croshy, Don and Diclc Jenlcs. Dick Ewing. Bob and Jack Bates. The high jumpers consisted of Phillips and Chase while the trio of Ernie Dahlen, Joe Case and Nlaurice Emhleton took care of the pole vaulting duties. Four boys shouldered the hurden of the distance runs including Delbert Smith, Bob Jones and Boze Sheward. - Hurdlers on the squad were Captain Bob Bates, Diclc McCurdy and Don Roese. Bill Fausnaugh, Jim Stewart and George Strickland saw action as discus throwers. i961 WRESTLING Finding his great championship structure of the year before shattered and practically demolished to the vanishing point hy graduation, George Collins. wrestling coach, found it a very ditticuit task to rebuild the team to the tineness ot the previous one. With only one of four city champion Wrestlers returning, namely Bob Wright, the West squad found the sea of wrestling very rough as it sank but one of the 'sii opponents encountered. The victory was over East, whom they tied tor third place. The tosses were sustained twice each by the co-champion, Aquinas and South teams, and once at the hands ot East. The squad did, however, deveiop some tine wrestlers including George Strick- land and Bois Wright. The former proved the victor in five matches white the latter captured four wins. ' Dick Ewing at 140 pounds, and Bob Byeriy at 155 pounds, displayed some excellent talent in their impressive showings. The tact: of experience proved the tatai hiow in the almost-victory-less sea- son, hut the West grappiers have learned their costly lesson, and since the team was composed ot mostly juniors and sophomores, a winning squad is expected next year. i971 GOLF Although they have not been as closely followed as some of the other sport teams the West golf squacl nevertheless enjoyecl one of the laest seasons in a long time and deserved some recognition for their excellent play. The squad was composed of a veteran quartet consisting of Charles Snycler, Mondo Lombardi, Bob Susie and Tony Oclcli. The latter was rated as one of the finest golfers in the city. The boys were tied with North for second place with three matches remaining on their schedule. The golfers' record stoocl as tive wins and one loss, the lone defeat coming at the hands of the league leacler, Arlington. Coach Collins farecl well in the coacher's league hy proving the victor in most matches. The West squad was one of the favorites in the clistrict golf tourney held May 16 and they went a long way before finally' being eliminated. i981 G. A. A. BOWLING Bowling took a part of the girl's sportiight at West this year. The first and only Girls' Bowling League was organized at West with Marjorie McCoy taking charge, and Miss Helen McCormick acting as advisor. Three games were bowled by each of the eight teams every Thursday over a period of twenty-eight weeks, starting early in October and ending April 25. At a banquet held in May a trophy was given to Eloise Bowman and her CowgirIs, who were acclaimed the winners. Each member of the team was awarded al charm--with Marjorie McCoy receiving one for the highest average. Defense stamps were given to the following girls who ranked next in achievement: Pat Kanavei, Gloria Hill, Barbara Leaman, and Beverly Phillips. A i991 G. A. A. ALL SPORTS Q This G.A.A. A very pleasant one. ln it, I lived my school life all over again. It tool: place in 1955 when my fellow students and I attended Elementary School. It was rumored that Helen Johnston was the brightest student at John Burroughs while Lewis Nicholson held top honors at West Broad. Eileen Watts, Ruth Mcclish and Leona lVlooney's name never failed to appear on the honor roll list. We weren't too young to he in love in those days either-at John Burroughs, Virginia Coss and Bch Riggs carried the torch for one another. While at West Broad, Joanne Dressers heart heat only for Bch Swisher: and Jim Reed never tired of writing love notes to Maw Chris Smith. Did you know that Nlarilyn Myers thought Lee lvlohn was her dream man? Nothing was sweeter than the hudding romance of Judy Lorenz and Harry Gihhon. Rita 0ldroyd's hashful heau was Jael-c Xfvorlcman. Those were the good ole ele- mentary school days. Then graduation, and we entered West Junior High. I can still remember Alhert Spencer and Chuck Snyder in their lmiclcer pants which, if I'm not mistaken, they Worefuntil the ninth grade. Q Then, too. we noted shy, sweet and quiet Doro- thy Hill, Charlene Brown, Dorothy Hayslip and Nlargy Stewart. When we had long registrations, lleen and Kathleen Condon used to favor us with hill-hilly songs, and that tvvosome, Eugenia Backus and Nancy Shepard, would hlend their voices in old favorites. And will we ever forget that siclc, shalcy feeling we all were guilty of having when it came our turn to recite hefore the class. I dreamt ahout the quarrels Carolyn Hoar and Emma Lee Heft, locker partners, used to have. The hright spot in our days was the iiashy smile. Carmie Limotta never failed to show.. Then the QA party'-which really was an event to remem- her. What a glorious time we had on gradu- ation. From then on wefwereseniors and Big Shotsl We started dressing up on St. Patriclfs Day, and the first day of spring in our sharpest clothes. The hoys loegan to attend dances and we girls started to pretty up. What ahout those awful term projects we wor- ried and fretted so much ahout? l saw the whole cast of Pride and Prejudice in its outstanding performance. My dream ended in 1942 when WE, the stu- dents, received those wonderful, heautiful, well- earned diplomas. lt still seems like a very pleas- ant dreamf, Enjoy It Often . Hutchinson. Being one of the finest presentations of this department, it was enjoyed by both adults and student body aiiice. Contributing much to the success of the musicaie were such talented students as Charles Williams, Mei Fiuhart, Nancy Shepard, Becky Roese, Alien Seipei, Marilyn Myers, Ned Brockington and many others.
