I 1 r 1 l , , ...n,N. HE West High Occident of this year, 1939, has accepted as its task the preservation of those things which have been so vital to the members of the faculty and the student body during the past year. The classes, the clubs, the social events-all have served to make this school year a milestone in the lives of all loyal West students. On this tenth anniversary of the new XVest High, the Occident staff completes its final page proof, and lays down its red pencil in the hope that this book will aid in keeping the activities and accomplishments of the past year fresh in the minds of all. CARL PAYNE Secretary .............. MARY LOUISE MILLER Wednesday, March 15, marked a red letter day in the lives of the forty-four members of this year's senior class who were selected for membership in the Otto H. Magly chapter of the National Honor Society, for it was on this day that the candidates for membership were named. The regulations for admission to this organization are based upon the four planks of the constitution which are scholarship, leadership, character, and service. It was very difficult to choose those members of the class of 1939 who were most eligible for this honor, due to the fact that the class as a whole, during its three years in VVest High School, has been one of most unusual merit. Gone are the days when students were taught readin', writin', an irithme- tic to the exclusion of the more necessary things, such as social adjustment. Through the media of the numerous clubs and organizations, West students learn to adjust themselves to different personalities and situations. VVhen class room work has long been forgotten those things which we have learned through associations will live on. Page Fifty-eigh 1' STUDENT COUNCIL President ......,.. ....... A Christmas celebration, a party welcoming the arrival of Spring and the club's annual picnic added extra activities to a schedule not in the least lacking throughout the entire season. New members were admitted to this honorary scholastic society at the March meeting, totaling the enrollment to 186 members. Since the standards of the organization are steep, and the nu1nber so enormous, Katherine Gress completed her second year as adviser for the club well pleased with th rollment of the society. e ever growing en- Page Fifty-nine Page Sixty WEST HIGH The band of West High has risen beyond its previous greatness and has given itself over to a new pinnacle of success and fame. Besides the excellent exhibition on the football field, the band, led by Gerald Johnston, showed its worth in numerous ways. The February concert, sponsored by the Band Parents Club, marked a new hi h in the histor that this rou has made. In that event, several solo selections, 8 Y 3 P quartet and sextet offerings were presented, with novelty dances and vocal numbers as added attractions. Ardent work and untiring rehearsal, with complete cooperation of all con- cerned, have furnished the success that is now a crowning glory. ORCHEST RA One of the outstanding assets to Vlfest High is its orchestra. Consisting of all those instruments usually found in an organization of its kind, this factor of school entertainment has become one of the most essential bodies and highly praised by all. A number of the members in the group are capable of handling solos, and are often given the opportunity to do so by Herbert E. Hutchinson, organizer and conductor of the orchestra, adding veriety to the musical arrangements pre- sented. A large enrollment and the appreciation expressed by the student body has enabled the orchestra to become one of the talked about popular groups in the building. Page Sixty-one Page Sixty-two VOCA A stirrin ad ' g sense of pride is possessed by West High when it recalls the mirable work of its vocal groups in the p-ast year. Several types of choruses were classified by the musical director, Herbert E. Hutchinson, from which he obtained excellent results. A number of the students were presented in various vocal entertainments sponsored by the school, oftentimes in solo, as in the State Contests, where West High figured notably. The boys figured prominently in the distribution of food and clothing appor- tioned to the needy at Thanksgiving time. Their annual skating party was, as usual, a tremendous success, and the several private activities attended by members only were received with rousing welcome. A. E. Buchanan, faculty adviser of the club, praised the boys for their in- terest, when he stated that the purpose of this organization was to create an abounding concern for fellow students and outside associates. According to Mr. Buchanan, the club has met this requirement, coupled with the others necessary, to make it outstanding in school activities. Assisting the Girl Reserves at th-e annual Holy Week services was also a duty of the Hi-Y. R UTI-I SAXBY The less specific customs of Roman life would perhaps never be known to students of Latin if they were to learn them in a matter-of-fact, cut and dried method of procedure. Instead, the students have assembled themselves into an organization, in which they can enjoy some of the customs in a truly wholesome manner. The programs presented, assume a serious and a lighter side. These, in addi- tion to the annual Roman banquet, which has been a more than popular tradition with the club for a number of years, and the Christmas celebration, arouse the interests of the organization's some 170 members, and hold them through the season. Margaret Campbell, substitute adviser, has esteemed herself in the hearts of the members of her undying attention in the absence of Mae Jones, regular faculty adviser of the Latin Club. During his -first season in the new capacity, Mr. Williams won the admiration of the entire student body, not only because of his efficiency as a coach but because of his un- derstanding of the boys. FOOTB ALL Success was rare, but enthusiasm high, throughout the entire football sea son. With only two letter men returning from last year's squad the West High Cowboys rolled up 87 points to their opponents' 73, but won only two games, tied one and lost six. However, the fighting team lost but one game by more than a single touch- down, which is somewhat of a secondary victory. The season was opened by a battle with Newark, lost in a I2 to o score. Springfield conquered the Cowboys 6 to 0, next was Mechanicsburg, the victor in a 42 to O ranting. Central won a I3 'to 7 decision with West returning to beat Chillicothe 7 to O. The following week West and East battled to a 7 to 7 tie, succeeded by the Aquinas game, resulting in a I3 to 7 score. West terminated its gridiron season by surrendering a 7 to 0 decision with North. Eighteen boys received initial letters: Captain, Ray Stinson, Howard Gentry, Dick Colburn, Bill Garnes, Warren Carter, Ralph Link, Verl Stout, Ned Bell, Jack Bowman, Bill Hart, Leroy Shady, George, Painter, Harold Banker, Paul Rogers, Art Baker, Henry Highfill, Jack Carpenter and senior manager Dwight Dixon. Mount Vernon conquered the Buckaroos 46 to 37, but they came back with a 38 to IQ Shakedown over East. Demon North laid a record of 32 to 23 upon the Cowboys and Central squelched them in a ten point difference. Nevertheless, the Bucks came back by defeating Aquinas and Galion in the second round.
