West High School Media Center 2808 Hennepin Avenue Minneapolis, MN 55408 .1 WEST HIGH SCHOOL VOL UME 72 I9SI HESPERIA N 1 It is in spring we are born And summer that we grow. In fall we are released. And in winter gain true thought. But is is spring once more ... A time to be reborn. A time to gain knowledge of reality and wisdom It is now that we venture out of West High To reach great heights .. . And conquer new frontiers. In creating this book. we hope to make a statement of the future through the reflections of our past. Reflections ... the joys and sorrows that will forever live in us. The 1981 Hesperian Staff. 4 s COACUviwV 8 9 RIDE THE HIGH TRAIL - HOMECOMING 'SO Everyone was ready for a rootin’ tootin' good time and with Ride The High Trail” as the Homecoming theme, that’s exactly what they got. The talent show was wild. Teachers and students both did a great deal to make the Las Vegas shows a big success. Who will ever forget the low-steppers?! After the talent show the pep fest and the parade charged everyone up for the football game soon to come. There was a great turnout of rowdy spirited fans. Unfortunately. West didn’t Tame the Tommies”. The dance, also, had a good turnout. with Wes-tites dressed in their best! Finishing off the exciting Homecoming Day - students danced the night away. The students sat in suspense, wondering who the new queen would be. Jennifer Kelly. Mena Muldoon. and Tina Neal walked slowly to the stage .... There has been a disturbance.” the masters of the ceremony exclaimed: The name of the future queen, along with other valuables. was stolen from the West safety deposit box. Please! Don't be alarmed!” At that moment. Calamity Jane (Julia Fishel) dashed into the auditorium in hot pursuit of the villain-thief (Dave Gunderson). The villain was caught, and the queen's name released. Lynn Viebahn. last year's queen, slowly walked back and forth between the three nominees holding the crown in her hand .... it was placed upon the head of the 1980 Homecoming Queen. Jennifer Kelly. It was a beautiful ceremony with the new dresses and the colorful stage setting. QUEEN JENNIFER KELLY. FRESHMAN ATTENDANT BECKY BRIER. SOPHOMORE ATTENDANT JILL ROONEY. JUNIOR ATTENDANT SUE BAKER. 17 JOHN LENNON: 1940-1980 The dream is over. John Lennon’s body now lies in gray ash, unjustly killed at the hand of a gun. The warm heart of this musician ceased to beat at the beginning of his new life. The heart stopped pumping but John's powerful message lives on: No excuse exists for downing drugs: no excuse exists for mistreating one's fellow men. John will timelessly be remembered for his stand as a Beatle. but we must reflect on his stand as as individual in society. John involved himself in a lifeling battle for peace, justice, and goodwill throught the world. How utterly poignant that John Lennon died at the hands of a cold, hard gun. Why must the good die young? 18 A serious repose. The great songwriting duo. The feeling felt around the world. 19 One of their last portraits together CORRAL YOUR COWBOY 20 Steve devilishly waits for jail bail Stacie dances the night away. Leah sippin' cider. Denise keeps a close watch. Hey yew country bumpkins. Sadie's 'round the bin! Grab yer favorite boyfriend and don 7 wait 'til the end! November 7th started off to a hay stack jumpin' start with an auditorium introducin' the Daisy Mae and Marry in’ Sam candidates. Bouncin’ and Behavin' Brenda Schlemmer and Dave Go Get ’Em Gunderson won. It must have been their lovely thermals and sexy freckles! Wes ties ended the day with a knee slap pin', whoopin' and yellin' time at the Sadie Hawkins Dance put on by the Highsteppers. Many sheriffs roamed in search of unlatched pairs while other couples were hitched up in the biffy. Sadiers enjoyed their dogpat-chin’ night dancin’ and goin' to the Saloon where cider and goodies were available. All agree that Sadie '80 was a success. Frosh Chad finds what jail bail is. 21 ’We’re Fetch in' Our Fellers!” LOOK WHO SHOWED UP AT THE HOLIDAY DANCE! John Travolta and his date take advantage of a slow dance. The Holiday Dance was a big success this year. Celebraties flew in from Hollywood and New York to attend the festivities. This was the biggest social event of 1980 so EVERY-ONE was there. The disc jockey played a wide variety of tunes that pleased everyone from the disco queens to the punk rockers. Many West High celebrities participated in the festive evening, but. due to our starstricken photographer. pictures of these Westies were unavailable. Whether they appeared in print or not. all that were present had a wonderful time. What a way to start off vacation! Charlene Tilton of Dallas was having a blast! 22 The Cars cruised into the dance. 23 Four auditoriums were featured during Black History Month. They were: Wayne Bolles from Mix Blood Theatre. student presentations of the historical contributions of Blacks and the group Destiny, and two West groups presenting skits. The Black Court consisted of: seniors. Norma Overbey and Steve Dinkins: juniors. Shalan Harpole and Geeno Hall: sophomores. Deborah Swindall. Christine Rimpson and Rodney Griffin: and freshman. Fred Bentley and Felicia Hyatt. That evening West had its First Black History Dance which was very successful. BLACK HISTORY MONTH 26 When you walk down the halls of West, you can hear and see all types of music. There's the new music, your classical, your funk and your country and western. Music has changed through out the years, and. therefore, influenced the life styles ot West High students. In other words music is it'’ man 27 Come on. fellows, spike that ballI SNO DAZE 1981 Auditorium backdrop adds to the spirit. Romp in the gym substitutes for romp in the snow. Jan seats Missy. Rompers bewareI Puddle jumping! Jello eating contest was all part of the fun. Mud puddles instead of snowmen did not disturb the enthusiasm of spirited Westies during Sno Daze. The junior board planned Thursday as ribbon day where the guys tried to claim as many ribbons as they could from the ,silent girls. Friday started out as 50’s Day and climaxed with an auditorium with a 50's theme. Volleyball in the gym substituted for a romp in the snow. The evening ended with a dance in the old boys ’ gym. The highlight of the dance was the raffling off of many prizes. Paul and Brenda end their reign. Crowned Mr. Blizzard and Miss Snowflake were Jan Knutson and Missy Lewis respectively. Jan also won the Mr. Legs contest. Aren’t these legs pretty? The “hooded flakes sing Boogie-oogie-oo-gie. 29 Mr. Irresistible. Geeno Hall U CO Captains.-Liz Geffen-.Rrenda Schlem-mer: Sharon Holt. HIGHSTEPPERS RDF AC OLD TRADITIONS This year the Highsteppers made many changes. The line was headed by three captains intead of two and they danced to a wider variety of music. Their style of dancing has changed from previous years as well. From participating in various competitions. the FUghsteppers learned new techniques in sharpness and precision. Another welcome change made by the line this year was the brand new basketball outfits. The life of a Highstepper is not just performing at games. They plan Sadie Hawkins and High-steppers’ Ball each year using money they earn over the summer at the annual carwash. One tradition that was kept was that of the famous Highstepper dinners. These huge feasts were held at a different girl’s house each time. but the usual rowdiness occured no matter where they were. Of course, every Highstepper looks forward to practice every afternoon. If you were to stop by the new gym lobby, you would hear shouts of where is everyone. or don’t watch in the mirror and the ever popular 1.2.3. ... OKA Y. Everybody do 48 kicks! 32 A new tradition-white gloves.no pompoms. Look down there. Perfect guiding! The Highsteppers are light on their feet! 33 The Highsteppers of the 60's. Few people remember wearing to school suits with a jacket and tie or long dresses that came down to their ankles and up to their chin. Fashion fads give students an identity with their times. Of course, fashions will change, but who knows what will become popular whether it will be people yelling their lungs out at a concert or sitting proper at an opera with your fellow studentsI Perhaps something will be resurrected from an earlier era and reflect on the present or the future generations. Wilms Staff development days, correcting papers, final grades and attendance letters are a few of the things that keep the West High faculty occupied while we students .... But many of you would be surprised with what some of the teachers and administration do in their spare time. For example. Ms. Matsis enjoys taking pictures, traveling, canoeing and hiking. Ms. Paine also likes the outdoors and her hobbie is gardening. Mr. Lynch keeps in shape by playing raquetball and waking up at 6:00 A.M. three mornings a week to swiml Mr. Hargreaves is another sports enthusiast. He plays soft-ball and skis. Ms. Wenzel is an avid bridge player and Ms. Hopson claims that all her free time is taken up by her four year old daughter. When they 're not out having a good time, the faculty tries to establish a good learning enviornment at West and broaden the academic and social horizons of the students. 76 L. to R.t R. McCoy. W. No. they just have a desire to be different. Their originality began to show early in their freshmen year in their homecoming skit and their ability to win the Sno-Daze romp in the snow. They were not overly confused by the first registration and they managed to make it through third tri with ease. Sophomore year was characterized by walking to parties, and Burger King. Also there was the big move from the balcony down to the main floor of the auditorium As juniors they experienced life as upperclassmen. They took the PSAT'S. suffered through Algebra Trig, and American Lit. They managed to obtain their drivers' licenses with scores of 71 and 72. Now they could drive to all those parties. When there were no parties people were known to hang out at Waldo 's although none would admit it. Finally they reached their goal. They were seniors! Once again this class displayed their creativity with their two fantastic Homecoming skits. Jennifer Kelly led the Homecoming court with Tina Neal and Mena Muldoon as her attendants. Some things that made this a memorable senior year were-. The parties sponsored by Kan Kuehn. no more hanging out at Waldos. The Touchdown and Echobaken. This class is definitely one in a million. They look forward to graduation with enthusiasm and are ready to find out about life after high school. SENIOR BOARD. FIRST ROW.D. Kuehn.C. May.P. Schwob.M. Mil-ler.SECOND ROW.J. Ohenesorge.M. ON COMING BACK Awe overwhelms me as I stand before the brick-dad building of my glorious high school days. As I grasp the cold of the metal handle. a chill runs up my spine. though the day's breeze is warm with the essence of roses and honeysuckle. I jerk the wood-grained door, but a metal chain bars me from entering the newly-renovated halls. It really doesn’t matter; everything is still pictured clearly in my mind . . . I remember my first freshman day! Great expectations filled my mind as I walked to school in light blue Levi cords, with a new pair of blue and white Adidas on my feet. My body tingled with excitement as I entered each new classroom. Great expectations were fulfilled throughout the yean first couple’s dances, cliques. room 300 ... It was great! My sophomore and junior years breezed by with disections of formaldehyde-stenched frogs, driving to parties, and fall football games. Graduation had seemed so far off. I counted the months. I counted the days. Westby homework, school organizations, and work filled my weeks. College acceptances were received, final decisions made. It was the week before prom, then suddenly the week before graduation. The music played . . . the march began . . . tears of joy. sadness. relief rained on the gymnasium floor.
