OtAy rpV- Cp O 4. ffilHIIIIflMSWlii '■5 . r - 3 . a IFtalii, ai.h A NICO Action DHflnd SnOdV NNtCU Go West Act One Life On The Range The West High Cowboy . . . full of life, vigor and he doesn’t whine when he has to taste a little dirt. He’s one who laughs in the face of Westby tests and cries over Holiday Break. Yes, that’s the person, and here’s the saga. A tale of hoe-downs and gidd’ups. A special taste of adventure known only to the cowboys and cowgirls. So look on; this will probably be the most pleasin’ tale of adventure you’ve ever seen, star-studded with your favorite cast. Quiet with the popcorn. Shhh everyone . . . the movie’s starting. Cowboys Put Another Knotch In Their Guns Proof Positive HOG PILE!!! The coronation, pep fest and talent show got Westites good and riled up to go and honk and scream their guts out in the parade and football game that followed. Our team didn’t care if they lost other games. Homecoming was just too important. The Millers were forced to eat the Cowboys dust in this event. West got down right mean and nasty while walloping Washburn 26-15 after being behind only once. The shindig that followed had a little extra zing knowing the Cowboys had another knotch in their guns. B. Thayer and T. Anderson perform. J. Fitzgerald and K. Snaza Get Down. SENIORS WON! J. Bordewich is looking forward to his driving permit. SUPER SENIOR A. Eliingham storms on stage. Westites show their support. Tension Mounted Junior Attendant. Carrie Oster-berg Sophomore Attendant. Maureen Rath Freshman Attendant. Sarah Streitz The identity of the new Queen is in the hands Queen Lisa relinquishes her realm to the new Queen. Lynn Viebahn of Gary Westbrook Senior Attendant. Kristy Bauer Senior Attendant. Jill Lund The 1979 Homecoming Court During one of the longest drum rolls ever to vibrate in the West auditorium. Queen Lynn Viebahn was crowned much to the pleasure of the onlookers and her temporarily lame date, Mike Galle. Will Ho-bert, with his escort, Carrie Osterberg on one arm and his mother on the other, brought many ooohhhs and aaahhhs from the audience. The alumni then went on to party and prepare for the parade and game, while students continued with classes in the spirit brought about by the half day of school. Printed Leggings And Thermal Solids Adorn Westites Spirits were high at Go West’s First Annual Black Tie Party. The day started with an auditorium, during which Daisy Mae and Mar-ryin’ Sam candidates were chosen. Kris Becht chased Nelson Ross and then booted him across the head with a particularly winning style. The Highsteppers and hockey players then did an equally winning dance on stage, preparin’ everyone for a rouser of a time at the dance which followed that evening. Formal wear at the evening dance ranged from printed floor length leggings to chic white thermal solids. The many participants had a rouser of a time as they “hoed on down” to the ever favored sound of a D.J. Even many of the supposedly meek were witnessed dusting the rosin from the floor! The fun, however, was often seen interrupted by a sheriff dragging one’s partner off to the neighborhood jail. All turned out well, though; a peck on the muzzle or bail of ten cents got ’em back clomping along at one’s side. It was a high steppin’ time from the Highsteppers. Mow who's going to jail? Dogpatchers take a stroll. Just the two of us. Martha and Dan: Big smiles go with a big time. Katie smears Red for a win! Taking a break before dancing the night away. Last Tango Of The Decade 20 Patty Pep is hot to trot. When E.F. Hutton talks, people listen! School seemd to be offering little excitement. Students were lethargic; anyone offering any sign of energy or interest in a subject was peered at oddly by the others. Suddenly someone interrupted this monotony by shouting, “Winter break is only a week away!’’ The countdown began: five days left . .. four . . . three .... A buss of excitement stirred the air that Friday, and at last the Holiday Dance had arrived. The West cast was decked out in slinky dresses, polyester pants, boots, spurs, and other disco duds. The sound of jingling and drumming Disco played upon their ears. A few cries requested music of the Talking Heads, Cars, Stones, and other fiddle pickers but were drowned out by the Cowboys stampeding - West High style • across the floor. Girls gathered in little cliques, madly chatting while NONCHALANTLY waiting to be tapped on the shoulder. Starry-eyed dancers swept the floor, carefully trying not to scuff one anothers boots. The Holidays were on, and everyone vowed to live up to every minute of this last dance of the seventies. “How do I love thee?” 21 West High’s disco mama's Sno-Daze Is Flaky After All “You got me.' “I got got! “I got ya! I’ve got to get him.” 22 P. Schwob and B. Schlemmer got each other. You won’t get me. Snow was not to be found and below zero temperatures seemed to be a thing of the past. Still, the devoted Junior Board members pulled together their memories of those bright white Daze and set their brains rolling. A romp in the snow was planned for Friday afternoon and a D.J. contracted for the dance that evening. Monday through Thursday dragged by with no trace of snow. Finally, our prayers were answered; a flurry of white flakes floated to the ground just hours before the event. After romping, screaming, falling off their horses and soaking their chaps, the participants treated themselves to donuts and piping hot chocolate. The dance that evening wound up the entire week’s events with a blazing show of spirit. 23 Who’s got who? It’s Branding Time With the sun just beginning to stretch out over the morning-gray sky, the grand gates of the West Corral open wide and the sleepy yet earnest beasts of burden break through the barrier of silence, ranchers await their arrival, hoping to corral the most dependable ones. Branding names like Westby, Baxter, Paine, and Gustafson, Bradach, Thomas, Kromminga, and Morgan are forged into the thick leather hides, as the young and the old — frustrated and confused — run aimlessly about, in search of a decent ranch on which to live. By high noon, most of the excitement and confusion of the early morning has dissipated, and the dust begins to settle as the last of the beasts is corraled, branded, and registered at the OP West High Corral. 25 There Is Nothing Prouder Than Me, The Black Rose Junior and Senior Kings and Queens. M. Lewis dances on stage. Sophomore candidates head for the stage. Freshman and Sophomore Kings and Queens. T. Guriy pauses during dance. A. Few makes his move. “There is nothing prouder than me, the Black Rose.” This line from Alfred Cook’s original poem could have been the theme for this year’s unusual Black History Week celebration. The cowhands at West picked a black King and Queen for each class. The winners were as follows: Seniors, Nelson Ross and Angela Wood; Juniors, Jerry Powell and Portia Fountain; Sophomores, Michael Toussaint and Missy Louis; and Freshman Kevin Buckhalton and Evette Harris. The week ended with the whole gang rounding up in the auditorium for a little entertainment and the crowning of the Kings and Queens. Some highlights of the program were singing to the Black National Anthem, listening to a poem written and recited by Alfred Cook, and hearing the powerful voice of Sylvia Griffin. The traditional cowpoke fashion show was again presented by Kevin Jenkins. 27 A. Few flashes his threads. T. Hudson dances on stage. ACT THREE RODEO Football Team Has NUGH Season The stampede enters the field!! AGH! Skylab. When mozying down the hall, sitting in class, chowing in the lunchroom, or just roaming around you must have heard the notorious sound of NUGH!!! Yes! That’s your wild and crazy football team showing their inspiration. West had quite an original season, with a 3 and 5 season record and the best homecoming game in years. Playing first singles was Jill Lund, second singles Julie Sands, and third singles Sarah Hunting or Sarah Streitz. Sound good so far? Wait ’til you hear the rest. Swinging through the season at first doubles were Toni Andrican and Ann Smith, followed up by Brenda Schlem-mer and Trisha Conroy at second doubles. Third doubles was played by Margot Dell and Leah Harrision. All topped off by a four win, four loss season record. It sounds as if West has even more promise for the year to come. Peter Bergner goes for the kill Any soccer team that puts “It takes leather balls to play soccer” on their homecoming float has got to be a rowdy and spirited bunch. Unfortunately, it takes more than spirit to win soccer games. One thing it does take is experience, and when the team plays largely against suburban varsity teams, the greenhorn freshmen and sophomores really have to show their stuff. This year they needed new uniforms, but because they aren’t an officially funded team, they had to rely on donations from Mr. Lynch, Mr. Allen, and a private party. There was so much trouble with the transportation that the B squad canceled two games because they couldn’t get there! One time during practice, a dog ran onto the field, and ran off with a soccer ball in his teeth. Money down the tube, right? Wrong. Coach Alan Hargreaves dashed over, found the dog’s owner, and collected the money from him. What would the team do without the harsh authority of Herr Hargreaves? Benny pumps Iron. Only 17 Westites accomplished this, they are the members of the Cross Country running team. They did a lot more than just run. Adventures included, picking flowers at Cedar Lake, stopping in at Kenwood store in midpractice, eating breakfast at school after the 6:00 A.M. runs and dunking initiations in Lake of the Isles. When most of us think on swim min’, we picture a gang of folks moseyin’ on down to the oP swim-min’ hole. But for the swim team, swimmin’ is hardly a leisurely dip. Every day the Piranha Club faced the brutal workouts of coaches Kathy Malone and Bill Monsoor. Hypoxics, no-faults and sheer pain couldn’t keep these gals from a sin-gin’ and a howlin’ on the bus, though, as they followed the examples set by Captains Janny Gustafson and Annie Ellingham. It isn’t easy to forget Shelton’s way of talking with her whistle in her mouth .......... “Sssstherve the ball, sssthweetie!” or Bra-dach’s, “Get on your knees! Move! Move!’’ Having Patty Clark and Ann Battaglia as their co-captains, doing 150 push-ups while the rest of the team struggled with 5. led the group to a great deal of sore weekends. The team always itched at the end of their game to bite into their mouth-watering emblem, PICKLES! It didn’t matter whether they won or lost, those little green bandits were always waiting for them. Unless of course, Shelton got hold of the jar. “Oh please. Lord, let me hit this ball!” VZf gsy fcC ! lAf.O If the saying “You are what you eat” is true, grits and baked beans do not constitute a large part of the average cowboy’s anatomy. Deep within the hallowed halls of the Old West, there lives a different breed of cowboy. Rugged and handsome like his cow-punchin’ brother, but unique, his own man. Instead of spur-studded boots and a 10 gallon hat, this sharp-shootin’ cowboy dresses in razor sharp skates and a sturdy helmet. Rather than swingin’ a rope and riding horseback, this hardworkin’ cowboy carries a stick and glides on ice. Like his farm hand brother, he hoots and hollars in victory. And, like his brother, who in defeat “bites the dust”, his head hangs low when he “bites the ice . Who is this cowboy, this deviation from the norm, this manly being? WE’RE NUMBER 1, WE’RE NUMBER 1! These are words you constantly heard from those wild cowgirls in their leotards and booties after winning just another gymnastics meet. The West Girls’ gymnastics team made quite a routine of winning this year, they only suffered one tough loss for the season. In the beginning the cowgirls experienced some rugged controversies which made it a little shakey at times but with the winning luck on their side they pulled through the season with a big cowgirl smile. The team had a record breaking 118 points scored in one meet, the highest points scored in the city. It was an exciting season for the cowgirls and with the loss of only one senior, the team will keep up to their new record. 62 E. Balcos follows through with dismount. S. Holt has style. If you ever got off your horse on a Tuesday or Friday night at West this past winter, chances are you couldn’t have had a dull time. The boys’ basketball team this year was on the rampage. They played in front of the biggest West basketball crowds in the schools’ history, and won all but 4 games the entire regular season. The final 1 point loss to Fridley Grace in game two of regional playoffs was the major heartbreaker of the year. The team was led and inspired by starters Adam Lindsay, Nelson Ross, Ed Scott, Jerry Powell and Rod Curtis. This years’ bench was small in numbers but super-subs included Steve Poor, Chuckie Smith, Larry Heines and Kevin Thomas. J. Powell lays up the ball, smoothly. Two points for E. Scott Gayla shoots a 20-footer Drinking will effect your game J. Martin disco’s during time outs Cowgirls Plow Through A Rugged Year Short people can play this game too! CJFO shows up at B-ball game. It just happened to be another of those rugged years for the West Girls’ Basketball team, not too much winning, not too many cowgirls, but alot of gusto and drive. All the young cowgirls enjoyed their rough and tough season and never lost their spirit. The support from the fans was really a lift for the cowgirls. Head honcho Jack Behrendt, Junior honcho Peg Boman with help from Stella Lusco and the team stuck together threw the long and treacherous season. By the end of the season the team began to show more aggression and more points on the score board. Girls’ Basketball has alot of talented cowgirls, it just needs the winning magic. Bottom Row. Newton takes a brake Playing water basketball after a heel-kicking practice was the big thrill for the boys swimming team. Well, that along with firing balls at Willie and shoving Tommy into the pool. Actually, these thrills were secondary to one of the best seasons since 1972-1973. The sharpshooting team would have had a 500 season if they had swam the South varmits in a 5 pool, but the South numbers proved too fierce in the last relay. Captains Bill Whitlock and Evan Newton were inspirational both mentally and physically; their promise for refreshments (after the merciless killing of Roosevelt) was a lift to everyone. Coach Hargreaves stood out at the practices and meets with his ear-breaking wit and opinions, he kept many under spirited team members coming back to practice. The lack of fans at meets did not stop rough riders like Bill Whitlock, John Baily and Clay Gustafson from taking frequent firsts. John Robinson was the high point of many meets with his slick-moving, high quality dives. The body-builders strike a pose. C. Gustafson rockets off. 75 M. Stevenson, a seasoned veteran in tenth grade. Skiers Wind Up Dusty Season Laura, yur skis are supposed to be parallel! Yes. there was a lack of snow. Yes, the practices were cancelled repeatedly. Yes. the team consisted of mostly little bucks, but the rough ridin’ Cross Country Team plowed through their dusty season. Coralled by trainer Mr. Keith and kept in line by the only two seniors, Molly Foster and John Beckmen, the Cross Country Team was only entered in four meets. The lack of meets didn’t destroy their ability, however, the boys finished fifth in the city. Although some of the rough riders were afraid to go down hills, they still continued to strive for the top. Bottom Row. L To R- B. Rinker, L. Plummer. K. Johnson. T. Nasby. M. Stokes. M. Beckmen. J. Rise ’n Shine As the sun begins to peek through the early morning smog, life stirs with the first chores of the day. News carriers dart about in their foreign economy cars, sanitation crews empty cans at the end of their lines, and the guy at the 7-11 puts up the coffee. Yes, early morning life has changed a bit over the years, but one thing remains the same. Throughout the decades, the wars, the eventual decline of the trolley car, the energy crunch, and the downfall of the Vikings, the essence and spirit of a western morning linger on in the souls of true cowpokes. With the placement of the first foot on the floor, the hardy cowpoke faces the dawning of the day with a mighty hankering. The quest for a respectable pair of jeans through the horde of clothes strewn about the room, the wrangle for bathroom rights with two movie-star siblings, the scramble for the last piece of toast in a kitchen chock-full of pop-tarts and frozen waffles — yes, this is truly the rising and shining of a western cowpoke. GO WEST TECHNICIANS i jA. i Ideas, Deadlines, Rubber Cement Frustrate Staffers J. Wilson hits on a good idea. Writing a paper that is to be read, possibly by the whole student body and faculty, is not all that it’s cracked up to be. There are frustrating dead lines, which entails cutting up paper into three millimeters in length to stick over mistakes, and after paste-up, no one leaves the room without rubber cement somewhere on their arms, hands, or under their fingernails. However, Newspaper isn’t always this exciting. These brave cast members not only write and paste-up, but they have to think of the stories and grid them. Only strong determination, guts, and a credit keep these individuals striving to find truth, justice. and the “American way” into journalism. L. Goetz has story problems. A. Ellingham takes time out. These, soon to graduate from West Cowboy cheerleaders into Dallas Cowboy cheerleaders, pom-pommed their way into West sports fans hearts this year. Being a cheerleader means being tackled at football games, trying to get the players to remember to run through the hoop at Homecoming, being hit by pucks, making cupcakes that always end up smashed, phone calls (room 33), getting up for summer practice at 8:00 A.M., freezing their legs while doing splits at hockey games and putting up with a boy cheerleader. Yes, these selected stubborn students already use their valuable talents to argue with fellow cowpokes over world crisis, act muleheaded to get their own way, and formulate arguments to change their grades. This year, the team’s coach Beverly Plant did not teach classes at West. She taught a full load of classes at South High, and it was very hard for her to coordinate the team. This year’s band proved to be one of the wildest, wackiest, most spirited gangs of musicians ever to assemble at West. Although much smaller than in years past — and most of ’em are youngins to boot — the high-flyin’ band gained admiration for its top quality a rootin’ and a tootin’. At rehearsals, horseplay and rastlin’ were common, as were rain dances, Latin-downs, and on-the- spot choreography. With the sharp-shootin’ directing of Mr. Keith and the high-spirited leadership of Pres. Julie (Boom Boom) Tilsen, this fun-lovin’ group enjoyed a memorable year. It was so much fun that some folks even hung ’round nights. Every Wednesday. 6:00 P.M., the hard-drivin’ stage banders got together to shed on their spirited brand of music. “It goes ‘Boom-boom-boom’. Andy Notes baffle Bordewlch. And If you do that again I’ll hit you even harder. Music Makers Add To “Go West” Spirit E. Newton relaxes with the ladies. % S. Cohen prepares a sneeze. Sunrise sings to a taste of honey”. Sunrise reveals their boisterous talent by crooning and hoofing on stage in front of all their fellow cowpokes, attempting to learn a new step, singing and smiling. Sunrise is made up of a selected group of 5 cowgirls and 2 cowboys. Sunrise is under the direction of wildman Thomas Kieth and jumping-fancy Renae Williams. Sunrise lightened up the crowd with their wild and crazy songs and their dazzling steps had everyone moving to the beat. Choir may not be the largest organization at West but they do have alot of character. At the first fall concert, 4 young cowgirls were howlin’ on stage representing the West High Choir. Do to lack of interest choir was rather small at the beginning of the year, but as the year progressed and the spirit was aroused, heards of cowgirls and cowboys couldn’t wait to join in on the action. E. Newton studies his lines. 97 All together now! Hey, that’s my line! Languages Add Twang And Roll German students ride in style. Look mom. I’m a star! Language coordinators for this production helped make everything sound a little special by adding a little twang and roll to the cast’s speech. French teacher Monsieur Oliver and his crew enjoyed such events a dining out at the Hotel de France and listening to his wonderful jokes all hour long. Spanish teacher Sehora Morgan always has something to contribute, the Spanish crew is always doing something fun and crazy such as pinatas, gourmet breakfests, and dining at Chi Chi’s. German teacher Herr Hargreaves is the hard core German Club leader. German Club sells “Happenings” books and enjoys picnics. This year the German Club took a trip to the St. Croix for a pleasant picnic. At the end of the year language coordinators joined and their crews joined together for the annual foreign language picnic at Cedar Lake. 98 T. Salmon drives earnestly. Why do these girls do it? Is it the money? No. Is it the exercise? No. Is it the fame or stardom? No. Well .. . maybe. It definitely has to be the thrill of dancing in front of hundreds of screaming fans (knowing that everyone in the bleachers can see your bloomers). It has to be the excitment of hearing lewd remarks from the guys standing around the stage door, as they exit. These brave women were inspired by their two capable leaders, highstepping captains Marya Morstad and Janet Bailly. To please the “Go West” audience, they had to practice hours on end, splitting, kicking, and doing other strange contortions. However, the Highsteppers made every pain worth while, and deserved every cheer. Highstepping line show precision kicking. The Highsteppers brighten up the tired audience. Breakfast was bad, but it got better by dinner” Laura Laburtis stated simply, and I have to say that Ironwood was BORING.” It was good that they had each other and that they had come to ski. They stayed in a youth hostel in the village of Bessimer and rose into Ironwood to experience the nightlife: a disco, a movie theater and a bowling alley. The town was boring but the Cowboys brought their Western excitement along on the trip. On a difficult trail the draft horses lost their way and pulled the wagon into a ditch. 1 suddenly saw the ground coming toward the window!” exclaimed one Cowboy. It was a harrowing experience, but all were safe and they continued on to Indian Head. All too soon, it was time to return. They packed up their skis and headed in the direction of Fort Snelling. Big deal!! “If you don’t want to go back to class now, you don’t have to,” frequently states the N.H.S. president, Brian Fabes, at the end of one of his stimulating meets. Having these bright kids as the brains of the cast was a smart move on our part. These kids are not just smart, however, they also sell lollipops for Halloween and candy canes for Christmas. They give birthday greetings to all the teachers, and they wash cars for extra bucks. But their activities don’t end there, they also misspelled honor on one of their posters, missed their yearbook group pictures (yes, there are more to N.H.S. than in the picture), and left third hour Humanities practically empty, due to their meetings, with just Andy, Julie, Tom, Johanus and Ludvig, Marya, Robert, Katie, and Rob to carry on the class. These intelligent souls, led by President Brian Fabes, Vice President Lisa Peterson, Secretary Kim Bagdorf, and Treasurer Dan Albitz, not only have exciting, non-parlimen-tary meetings, but also miss alot of class time. Boredom sets in Advisor Paine enjoys comments 105 D. Albitz strongly disagrees. A kiss, a clasp of a pair of hands, a simple touch . .. these are all parts of a cowboy’s romance on the range. This tradition never seems to loose its spirit. In fall, the tradition starts with girls madly cheering for their guys on the field, and happy couples filling the bleachers. Miss Snowflake and Mr. Blizzard continue the tradition on a ground of white for winter, Kow Pokes’. Calamity Jane and Buffalo Bill ride gallantly into spring. Carrying the tradition along. High-stepper’s and Prom provide the stepping stones into summer. With summer come the endless days in the hot white sand. All in all, Romance on the Range promises to live on. Scenes Of Toil And Triumph Believe it or not, there is life for our administration beyond the range of this western corral! Did you know that Lynch enjoys swimming three mornings a week, McCoy plays the piano, and Roessel travels to such exotic places as Mexico and New Orleans? I’ll bet not! But, aside from their lives beyond these cattle gates, these three master cowboys have directed a great show throughout the scenes of toil and triumph. Announcements such as, “Teachers, we had 6,000 progress report cards this morning and have now run out. Could you please return any unused ones?91 recall the glories of our school. Luckily, we have had the social workers and counselors to help control the confusion of this production. Their jobs include helping deal with problems concerning friends, family and chemical dependency, as well as helping in plans for future employment and education. I can’t wait to get my own office. Why, that’s easy — the creative and spicey script. And where would one go to learn to write such a script? The English department — where else? Even with cutbacks and curriculum changes, the english teachers faired well in their dealings with West’s tempermental stars and green amateurs. A well written script doesn’t end with verb agreement and parallel structure, though. Interesting, factual material is necessary to make a scene a “go”, and through the unending work of the social studies department, this production always had enough to work with. Why spend two hours writing out a script when it can be typed in 20 minutes? Or maybe one may find it helpful to use shorthand in order to keep up with all the notes being given in social studies. Anything is possible in a business class. Courses in typing, accounting, record keeping, shorthand, and office work are offered, so as to keep “Go West’s” official transcripts organized. The call of “quiet on the set” is not restricted to the directors of “Go West”, for our talented cast is well known for its pursuit of conversation — even in the library. When Ms. Paulsen, the librarian, isn’t shushing the cocky stars, she can be found making order of the many piles of books and various other learning paraphernalia strewn about the library. Gilbert Malm. “Of course I like my job!” Departments Keep Production Going Industrial Arts-L. to R.: Robert Larson: Richard Maxwell take HC There is no doubt that the “Go West’’ production crew would have been in complete shambles if it had not been for the aid of four departments. These departments were: Science, Math, Industrial Arts, and Work Program. Where would we be if we had not the knowhow of the science department? Sure, they built a shark during the rehearsals, but we always knew if we needed them, they would be there. If ever an actor or stuntman would really “break a leg,” the science clan (Mr. Baxter, Mr. Thomas, and Mr. Laine) would always be on hand with their hypodermic needles, tape, and plaster. Luckily for us, the situation never occurred. The crew is forever grateful to the math department. Without their aid and assistance, we would have to figure out all the employee wages ourselves. Whenever the crew was down. Mr. Backhaus would come through with a real, repetitive zinger, that would pick us all up. This production of “Go West” couldn’t have been possible if it hadn’t been for the electricians, architects, mechanics, and printers of our scripts. All these vital employees wouldn’t have known how to even screw in a light bulb if not for the keen direction of Mr. Larson and Mr. Maxwell. All of our actors and actresses didn’t find stardom in a day, they had to start somewhere. The work program aids the stars and their careers by helping them with a schedule that will allow them to attend school and still hold a job. This way, even if the actor or actress couldn’t act his or her way out of a paper bag, he or she would make enough money so as not to starve. Led by Mrs. Morgan (Spanish), Mr. Oliver (French), and Mr. Hargreaves (German), the large and diverse group of Westites improvised their way through infinitives and vocabulary. They also found time to partake in foreign delicacies, celebrate old-world festivals, and travel across the sea. ART By virtue of the dynamic work done by the art department, “Go West” has no need to fret about P.R. The many able artists working under Mrs. White and Mr. McClure created pieces of art work that were displayed not only in school, but throughout the city as well. HOME ECONOMICS Behind every great production there are great costumes, and “Go West” is no exception. Many talented seamstresses and tailors had the opportunity to show their skills, as instructor Mrs. Garastik held informal classes. Students in other areas of Home Ec exchanged ideas on such topics as divorce, housing, and child development. MUSIC After a year’s leave of absence, music director Mr. Keith re-appeared on the scene to provide the musical elements needed to make “Go West” a success. Being the only music director in the organiztion, Mr. Keith was in charge of not only the instrumental, but the vocal sounds as well. Je ne comprends pas . .. i k L. Burpee hard at work. A. Working from extensive gym classes, this year’s stuntmen taught our cast to be prepared for the falls of life. Our phys. ed. classes were graced with such beautiful people as our dear old Athletic Director Dick Allen, Patricia Kairis, Joanne Hulet and Charles Voss. Making West seen is the job of this year’s janitors. Although many people think their job consists only of booting people out of the lunchroom, they also clean the dust off the tops of lockers, clean out the bathrooms and other exciting jobs that keep our sets clean. “25 cents!? Where are the fries, this milk is leaky, whadda ya mean ya don’t have change!” Cashiers in the lunch line hear these phrases every day. But if it wasn’t for these cashiers, who spend most of their time as cooks, what would our cast do to keep from starving between takes. For a few students, special education is very important. The Search For More There are some students in West that long for something more than is offered at this school. They want more than phy. ed. or typing classes. These students ride beyond the horizon of the West High Ranch. They follow such callings as modern dance, art history, theatre arts and filmmaking. They find these things through Urban Arts. It is the challenge of Urban arts that makes these classes important to only a few, the people who search for more. 121 Method acting takes concentration. “Quick! step on that centipede! How The West Was Lynched Though he has all the essentials of true cowboy- tall, cheerful, gutsy- M Lynch’s Bostonian accent started thi year with a sense of uniqueness. The first time the whole gang saw oi new head hancho was at the first pe fest. He immediately won the cowhand’ approval by making a small joke aboi his height. He then boosted the moral of the football team by saying he wante to show-up our ex-principal, Mr. Berr sten, by beating Washburn. Mr. Lync received a long round of hootin’ and ho lerin’, and started his new life at Wesl However, to Mr. Lynch, this hootir and hollerin’ wasn’t enough. He had t hear the whalin’ and whinin’ when h laid down the laws of the West-no mor radios or tape decks, no more roamin the halls, more aides in the halls, and n more buying soda except at lunch. And so he began the saga of “How th t West was Lynched.’ Presenting: The STARS And now . .. it’s showtime! Yes sirree, it’s the time you’ve all been waiting for! That’s right, it’s the star line up. They came in 1977 as mere understudies, but through hard work and talent they worked their way up to become the stars that they are today. As little, but intelligent freshman, they saw the Western station torn down and a new gym put up in its place, their football team was All-City champs, and their freshman homecoming attendant was Trish Conroy. When they started up the ladder and became sophomores, they plowed through Miss Westby’s writing class, they were able to join in on the school musical, “South Pacific,” they had Greg Trebtoske as the Kow Poke’s attendant and Janet Bailey as sophomore homecoming attendant. Nearing the top and feeling the anticipation of becoming the stars they were meant to be. they, as juniors, had Ann Inveen as the junior homecoming attendant, and Kris Od-land and Laurie Swanson as Sno-Daze Mr. Blizzard and Miss Sno-Flake. They also had a great time taking the PSAT’s. Now, as seniors, they have reached stardom, and they show it. They had Lynn Vie-bahn as the Homecoming queen and Kristy Bauer and Jill Lund as the sparkling attendants. They felt the climactic pressure of the draft, they also felt the dramatic pressures of the ACT, the SAT and the Achievement tests, they made the grotesque sound of “nugh” what it is today. They went through the first few years with the new gym. They have top-notch musicians, athletes, actors and actresses. Yes, they may be the last of a vanishing breed good-looking, talented and smart. But because they are the stars that they are, their names will live on forever! 126 Another day, another A’ for N.H.S. Pres. B. Juniors: Co-Stars Step Towards Stardom Drivers tests, PSATs and Junior Board elections were a few of the many new experiences these co-stars whizzed on through this year. They also overwhelmed the other classes by winning “2-bits” at a sophomore football game, letting their voices be heard concerning the rehabilitation of West, and publishing an underground newspaper. Academics including first chemistry and physics exams also filled a large part of these cast members lives, but these things encourage one to speak of the more glorious moments of the year; later curfews, driving to parties, and intellectually stimulating conversation helped lead them all one step further along the parth to STARDOM! Sophomores: Understudies Wonder Where To From Here After a rugged first year here at West, the class of ’82 finally has someone to kick around. These developing understudies were the first sophomores to have a board, but it will take at least another two years for these greenhorns to master western lifestyles. They tacked up a sign in the auditorium during homecoming and a few of them showed up at this years dances. After a first trimester of sophomore writing and a year of geometry these sophomoric cast members are ready to take on Juniorism and later Senioritis. We finally have a break M. Hold on to your cameras, the freshman class is making their movie debut in the production of Go West. Although these freshman our only extras, you can’t help but notice the clues of their existence here at West. These Extras handle such jobs as freshman writing, grammar, algebra, science, and extracurricular work. The freshman have passed the general courses but their extracurricular work revealed a slight technicality. They misspelled flamboyant on their homecoming sign and paid a dime rather then a kiss at sadie. But these freshman might move up to be understudies yet. The new extras have been very active in this production with a new freshman board, new athletic talent, freshman attendent Sara Streitz, and the prep era are all part of this freshman class. The only place you don’t notice them is at the annual cast parties. Eager Extras await start of parade. Sarah and Tom sachet to stage for debut. Homework is such a drag!
