It is a game, quite similar to Russian Roulette, where sometimes you win and sometimes you don’t. However, most survive the hectic experience unscarred with little more than a headache. Fabulous September 10, 1976 In the neighborhood of twenty eight and Hennepin, on the night of September tenth, a familiar but new sound was heard echoing from West High School. In need of a break after only two days of school, students gathered for the Cheerleader’s Dance. Laughter of old students and new. greetings and screams of surprise marked the first of the year. The Cheerleader’s super spirit rubbed off on all the students as they “bopped, bumped and hustled far off into the night. 19 1976-77 HOMECOMING COURT-FIRST ROW. L. TO R. G. Williams. R. Baker. P. Vu. 20 An Autumn Aura October 8, 1976 It was a day of coming home for some people and being home for others. Yet everyone knew it was truly an Autumn Adventure. When the 1976 Queen Cheryl Oliver crowned now reigning Martha Schwob, it was like a burst of Fall color coming from the leaves and illuminating all of West. Thrill, emotions, and excitment filled the school, as it was harvest time for spirit and an ovation of the students. As the court and their Queen radiated over the day's events, it became a TIME to cherish in a PLACE to remember. 1976-77 Homecoming Queen Martha Schwob Senior Attendant Paula Inveen Junior Attendant Jean Hanvik Sophomore Attendant Sue Nammacher Freshman Attendant Tricia Conroy Senior Attendant Gail Williams Just Plain Fun — Sizzling Seniors Satisfy — Henry again? — stag or drag — Sophs Have Style — rain on the parade and game — Fascinating what? SPIRIT!!! SPIRIT!!! The Babcocks lead the parade with western spirit. It was the PLACE to be ... A Time We Had Voices screamed and pom poms waved as the spirited Westites cheered their team on. The noise, although deafening, seemed blissful as the school displayed its unity and vigor. The Cowboys fought hard and made a valiant effort. Although they lost, in the eyes of West fans they will always be winners. That evening the dance lured many, as the gym was packed with couples and stags. With a setting of Fall colors, it created a perfect mood which was to end the Autumn Adventure. 23 Get, ’Em Grab ’Em November 5, 1976 Sadie Hawkins brought the best of us hillbillies out of the barn and into the dogpatch as we toddled on down to the dance. Those dag nab sheriffs were everywhere trying to round up those guys and stick’em in the hoosegow so that their little sweethearts would have to smooch'em out. When we '‘escaped from the law. we slipped off to the biffy to tie the knot during a two, four, or six bit wedding. Then we left the shindig and dawdled on back to the barn. SURPRISE!!!SURPRISE!HSURPRISE!!! The barnyard was really bouncing that night. Swing 'Em Smooch 'Em — out of this barnyard — gals ask the fellers — MORE sheriffs. Sno-Daze week was unique this year. On Monday we came and found Western demolished, our football field fenced off and no snow! On Friday, the Juniors produced a twenty minute auditorium where Paula Inveen and Pete Norton relinquished their crowns to Amy Smith and Steve Waalk. A few spirited Westites attempted to romp-in-the-snow but in the end had to admit there wasn’t any!! So they hurried to the lunchroom for some socializing and hot cocoa. Our dance was threatened by the energy shortage but in the end it happened- and with Junior style! The Big Snowball makes its entrance! The glare of anticipation! Pete and Paula still preside. It was the year of a presidential election and the end of our nation’s Bicentennial. We had an inhumanly cold winter and a fuel shortage at the same time. This meant lowered temperatures inside making it almost as bad as outside. For seniors the year meant filling out forms and watching your money disappear. Construction finally began on the new gym, and we were no longer allowed to roam the halls during classes. It was really a year to remember. Steve's sign reflects the views of many West students. Many people gathered in room 300 to watch the inauguration. 28 West students went to City Hall to protest the cutting o( school sports. They enlightened the holiday auditorium with a merry medly of tunes. Their imaginitive musical talent thrilled the whole audience, warming them on a cold winter night. They worked together in harmony to make every song sound spectacular!! We were in the mood to hear the choir. 30 Marvin Hamlish eat your heart out!! It's the holiday spirit! Dance And Sing To At a quarter to nine we were starting to worry. The crowd was very small. But at nine O'clock Westites arrived by the dozen. The holiday dance was sponsored by the student council and it was a great success. The cost was 1.00 with a can of food, or 1.75 without. All food was donated to a charity. The variety of music played by the eight piece band seemed to please the whole crowd. 31 Newspaper Took January 24, 25. 1977. Well. Well. Well, we made it! Through all the sticky parts , and through Mr. Stelten’s helpful critisism” director, cast, and stage crew all unified into a total happening. The make-up sometimes smeared, and there were a few ad libbing events but in the end we all agreed that the play was lovely . Speakers came periodically during the week, with topics such as black potential and how to use it effectively. Buttons were sold to promote the spirit, picturing Africa colored in with the Afro-American black, red, and green. The auditorium was a trememdous success. A dance group specializing in african dances kept the whole audience astounded with their agility and beat. With authentic costumes and lively music it became the perfect finale for the week. West displays it's own black talent. Original songs and combinations of authentic rituals comprised the music. 34 35 We Enrich Each Other Change and enthusiasm are the two words that were most prominent in NHS this year. Change was PRESENT with our new advisor Ms. Paine and in the burst of activities that have taken place. Through turkey raffles, pumpkin sucker sales, Christmas card sales, carnation sales, graduation announcements, and our auditorium. Our efforts were successful as we involved NHS with the student body. Advisor Ms Paine looks on as members laugh about a project suggestion. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY — FIRST ROW. L. The five students under the direction of Mr. Keith formed the first orchestra in five years. As one of the few orchestras in the school system they entertain us with the string bass, violin and viola. So next time you hear the finale from Haydn’s eighty-sixth symphony you know it is the new West High orchestra bowing and fiddling their way through the day. By The Students West High's Student Council consists of students representing students. The council, headed by dedicated advisor Dick Allen, sponsored many school social-related activities. Their main function was to represent the student body and make progress towards bettering the school. Besides being fun and worthwhile, student council was a place where members could toss new ideas around, express opinions and argue! Committees were formed within the council to ensure Members listen attentively. total success and total school approval of planned activities. What's new Mr. Allen? STUDENT COUNCIL —FIRST ROW. L. We Did Paging through your yearbook is like a trip back to highschool. The book is a flashback of sights, sounds and even smells of West High. When a staff member looks at this yearbook page, memories will flood back: typing one word an hour, “Where’s Hansen?”, “I love it”, all night deadline parties at Amy's. “Don’t look!”, “Bert's here”, and undoubtedly the shock of, “Deadline tomorrow!?” A unique experience, a time of frustration and inspiration. The good and well played music, joined with exciting light shows has led to a year that director Thomas Keith and whole band is proud of.
