Add educators and learners. Have them work together. Have them strive for common goals. Have them weep together, rejoice together. Have them become friends. In the end, there is West.. 2 We've got questions to ask. Where do freshmen actually come from? What makes a sophomore tick? Where do juniors NOT come from? Why do seniors STOP ticking in the spring? Searching for answers, we find still more questions. “Who am I? One day it occurs to us. We are individuals and we belong to West High. 3 4 See What We’ve Got... 6 Upon The Education Of The People Of This Country The Fate Of This Country Depends rrm w r i 8 11 12 What is school oriented, but a break from academics? What do clubs and groups put their afternoons and many hours of preparation into? What makes a long school day seem shorter? What are students doing when they’re dancing, performing, cheering, highstepping, organizing, holding fund raisers, laughing and having a good time? All This For An Education? The next lime anyone wants to put a West high student into a cold sweat, all they'll need to do is mention the word “registration.” How can the experience be described? It’s a feeling of panic. It’s a teacher repeating “sorry, full” to pleading students. It's tripping over freshmen and getting out of the way of seniors. It's a sigh of relief when stumbling out the door. It’s part of being a student. Counselor Nclvia Brady sums it all up! The busy rush of registration is experienced by both students and faculty. 16 Matt Schwob and Sylvia Peters enjoy some mood music. It’s a cheerleader sponsored dance, so it’s Sarah Preston’s night to really shine! They could’ve danced all night! Always First, Always Successful A dance on the second day of school? We thought that the cheerleaders had gone slap happy. But upon entering the gym, the music of “Hot Smoke” started our feet tapping. We quickly got rcaquainted with old friends and met new ones. The end of the dance came much too soon, but we left the gym with a bright outlook for the coming school year. 17 Aaron Keith has his own style. 1975-76 Homecoming Queen Cheryll Oliver 1975-76 HOMECOMING COURT — FIRST ROW. L. TO R.: C. Gallc, V. Nelson. A. Baron. D. Phelps. K. Malone, M. Baron. P. Sussman. SECOND ROW: F. Price. M. Kittler, M. Swanson. Freshman Ladies in Waiting Mary Birk and Mary Swanson Red, White And Beauty Hearts were pounding with excitement as students quickly filled the brightly decorated auditorium. The coronation began. The radiant homecoming court was gracefully escorted to the red, white, and blue bicentennal stage. When the tension was alsmost unbearable, the returning queen. Sue Lampson, crowned the 1975-76 Homecoming Queen — Cheryll Oliver! A burst of applause, and a standing ovation welcomed our new queen to her throne. This thrilling beginning led to a homecoming day which will never be forgotten by proud West High. 18 Senior attendant Mary Baron with escort David Etshokin Sophomore attendant Velma Nelson with Junior attendant Anne Baron with escort Michael escort Frank Price Kittlcr Senior attendant Kelly Malone with escort David Daniels Seniors present a football farce about the Henry team. 20 School Spirit Beamed In West’s soccer team is hard to miss in the parade with Mike Childers’ notorious horn. Ladies in waiting wave gracefully at the crowds. Every Smile — “hear ye. hear ye” — “what’s a sphygmoid?” — “can I be excused from class?” — t.p.ing Henry High School — “freshmen arc fab-what?” — another box. another box — Mr. Allen to the rescue — “Is there a junior sign under those balloons?” — super sophs — fry the patties — Homecoming day. a success On the day preceding Homecoming, West High was formally invited to attend the day’s festivities, by Tom Hcnncscy and Lynn Cannon. “We'll have this gym looking great within an hour .. maybe two hours ... maybe three ... Ray. you’re such a dream ... Tense excitement radiated throughout the Cowboys’ game over Henry. Victory And Then Reflection A twinkle in the eye of Kelly Malone expresses the mood of her exciting day. Bleachers were packed with students, faculty, and alumni. The crowd was especially spirited. Horns, whistles, cheers and screams could be heard blocks away from West. The mighty cowboys burst through their traditional paper hoop and were on their way to an exciting and triumphant Homecoming game. After the game many went home to prepare for the dance. For the first time. West’s Homecoming was stag and in the boys’ gym. What a success! In a world of green, white, and mirrored snow, students danced until their feet ached and then some more. They've really got it all at West! 21 Marriage vows are read for Kathy, Anne, Jacqui, and their dates. Catch ‘Em-n-Kiss ‘Em! The Sadie Hawkins dance was a knce-slapper! A country western band set the mood for us gals to grab our guys and mosic on down to the boys gym. Strict “sheriffs” made sure we held hands, but of course, there were those blushing girls who had to kiss their boys out of “jail.” Two, four, and six bit weddings got everyone hitched up in the “biffy” by Marryin Sam and Daisy Mac. 22 Dressed real hillbilly-like. Marianne Oyaas and Doug Kcllam boogie! It’s our 1975 Marryin Sam Bill Conroy, and Daisy Mac Kelly Malone! Sheila Dornbach exclaims that she ain’t gonna let go-a-hcr date fer nuthin’! “Sheriffs” sold fritters West High style-cookies and pop. — getting up the courage to ask him! — garters, gingham and overalls — penny per pound fer the fellers — country western band, “Last Chance” — “turkey in the straw” — marriage in the “biffy”? — freckles and pigtails — “but I WAS holding his hand!” — crazy, fun and rowdy! .23 Thrills And Chills Wc sensed the excitment in the juniors a full week in advance. Posters were being hung, preparing us for Sno-Daze ’76. Miss Snowflake. Paula Inveen and Mr. Blizzard, Pete Norton snowed over the dazzling week. Olympics, sponsored by the Letterman’s club and a romp in the snow followed by hot cocoa in the lunchroom made the daze snowrific! “Sno-Daze '16 buttons were sold for the first time. They had a dual purpose: SPIRIT and admittance to the dance. Dancing In The Moonlight After candle light dining at the elegant restaurants of Minneapolis, girls and their flames sauntered off to “The Women’s Club”. They danced on Aire” and whirled the night away. Slipping into “Mom’s fur,” and “Dad’s tophat,’’ couples left the dance reflecting on a dreamy evening. Freshmen haven’t yet learned that you hold each OTHER S hands! Swirling and twirling. Connie displays the glamour of the dance. The seductive eye of a senior woman Brass adds pi a z! Classy attire for a classy affair. Picture time! Haga photography is a familiar sight at all West dances. Highslcppcr s Ball — ladies invite gentlemen preparing weeks in advance slinky gowns — meeting our dates parents “I hardly recognized my date without his jean jacket” cocktails before the dance — “If anyone is wearing my dress. I'll just die!’ — and after the dance ... 27 Starting On A Good Note The pop group took us around the world with “Yinklc Bells by using strange accents. The choir and pop group combined for a stirring split-level chorus. The stage band showed their talents by playing AND singing. We showed our talents by clapping and sometimes dancing to the stage band’s Beer Barrel Polka. The holiday concert was topped off by the majestic music of the concert band and choir. warming us up on a winter night. The gayly decorated stage reflected the music of the concert band. Maybe stage band members Wes and Larry should try out for choir! Legs and holiday spirits were raised by the pop group. Meeting friends and having a good time at the dance was easy! Dance To The Music The gym was quiet in the beginning. Soon, however, people started dancing to the great music of “Grand Central” There were many styles of dancing, but with the encouragement of the band, EVERYBODY danced! Some wore jeans, some wore suits, but all felt comfortable. It was a fun dance with a good cause. It was held as a benefit-holiday dance for the Curtis family, whose house had recently been destroyed by fire. 29 West’s Love And Death We all wanted to know. “Who dunnit?” Surely those seniors, our friends, weren’t killers! They were performing the drama, “And Then There Were None, and doing a great job of it. We chuckled at an occasional mistake or joke; jumped at the sound of a pistol shot and racked our brains trying to discover the killer’s identity. Four shows, three different endings, and two casts, kept the crowds entertained. Did the maid do it? It looks awfully suspicious. The characters all wonder who and where the mysterious “U.N. Owens arc. With a warm embrace, Lombard consoles Vera. (Watch those hands Rick!) 30 Emily preaches to Vera on the evils of alchohol and short skirts. Alumnus Kevin Jenkins and O ina Brown perform an original dance. When Frank Price smiles, it doesn't matter WHAT he says! Lift Every Voice 11 was a moving week, showing the unity of all our students. We spent time reflecting on all the great contributions that blacks have made to this country. The auditorium gave us a real look at authentic black African culture through dances and spcechs. Black History Week helped us learn and grow in the understanding and fellowship. “The Way Community Center performed a variety of native dances. 32 The Black Anthem opened the afternoon auditorium. —“The Learning Tree” —“When do we gel to see the second half of the movie?” —drawing on many resources to make it all tick Black Anthem —blacks and the bicentennial —Wayne Lott's award winning speech —black power —the biggest and the best —working together to make it happen —WE can make it happen! Need Helpful Students? Then go to the National Honor Society and just ask. They sell and deliver valentines. They choose our graduation announcements. They plan something as new as a masquerade ball. They present traditions such as the Fine Arts Auditorium, and the carnations. Through all these activities, the National Honor Society serves our school, showing that communication with new people, events, and ideas is not only necessary, but fun! Art appreciation day brought West artists out into the open with paintings in the library and jewelry in the trophy case. The quiet sounds or nature are heard and imagined as Grace Gullixson plays “To Spring”. A Treasury Of Talent The first sign of spring this year was not, contrary to popular belief, the first fire drill of 1976. Spring was welcomed by the Fine Arts Auditorium, sponsored by the National Honor Society. Pastel paper flowers, spring clothing and a light, peppy program reminded us that there is more to West than plodding through snow and tough classes. Some of the performers tap danced; others sang selections from “Cabaret”. They all worked hard to polish their acts, making the program run smoothly. West should be proud of such talented people! 35 Andrea and her flute; a melodic team! Character Constitutes ’76 Council Student council was behind the scenes this year in many ways. To involve more of West’s students we brought the homecoming dance back into the school. We also had many other successful activities; such as selling buttons and organizing a dance a month. But mostly, student council helped to bridge the gap between students and the administration. Tim Jordan takes charge of the council-sponsored December dance and donation box. Service With A Smile It’s half time during a home football game and our stomachs ask for snacks. We go to the service club table and eye goodies of all kinds; pop, candy and even popcorn. In addition to filling stomachs and emptying pockets, service club helps direct our confused parents at Open House. The affirmative teams want an international organization to be in charge. The negative teams arc of course opposed to this. To see what the world’s got to offer we sit down with Ms. Plant, our coach, until we understand the subject. Then we delve into congressional reports, current periodicals, cut and paste the information on file cards. Then early one Saturday morning we travel to a suburb, win a debate and all that work seems worth it. Sophomore John Bentz stands tall as he dcliv ers his rebuttal. 39 At Taylor's Falls, the German club proves that there's happiness m numbers. They also presented Black History Week and Native American Indian Week through auditoriums and displays. They go on fieldtrips and attend ethnic festivals. But mostly, these people learn to respect each other and share ideas. Despite Martha Schwob's shyness in looking at the camera, her smile shows she's having a great time skiing. “One-Slope” Minds Some think the ski club is a seasonal group. But we’re active all year. During the winter we ski. This year we went to Bessemer, Michigan to ski the slopes of Porcupine, Indianhead, and Powderhorn. In the spring we cry as we put our skis away. During the summer we wish it was 3(Tinstead of 90°. But it’s when school starts again that our hearts really ache for snow. Mr. Hargreaves then shows us skiing films, and we begin planning our annual ski trips. And so, ski fever continues its never-ending cycle! SKI CLUB — FIRST ROW. L. TO .: B Murray. T. Madson. K. What is capable of bringing both pain and glory? What makes us take hundreds of showers? What is healthy for both the mind and the body? What is an ideal way to express school spirit? What is a challenging and fun activity? What creates huge appetites? 50 SPORTS MM Cowboys Round Up The Season Most of the coaches in the city told coach McNamer that they were afraid to play us because of our explosive offense — ain’t it the truth! It’s just that they forgot to mention our aggressive defense! Captains Richard and Jay led the team with pride and skill. We can’t forget Bill either, he was the control man for most of the offensive plays which led to some great scoring. Working together every day makes us feel like a family. 90 BAND — FIRST ROW, L. TO R.: M. Trogcn. K. Lockc. H. Allen. M. Parker. M. Jackson. L. Strcitz, D. Douglas. J. Ranallo, C. Harvala. L. We have to travel to get to our classes, but it’s worth it. There arc unlimited courses offered, ranging anywhere from dancing, to photography, to creating wild new sounds. These classes are fun and challenging, taught by interesting people who encourage us to use our imaginations and to express ourselves through the arts. Ms. Cheryl Creccy: art. Plan for your future today.' Creativity Classes In the art classes we let our imaginations run away with our hands. The art rooms arc spacious and comfortable — we can even listen to music as we work. Creating anything from sculptures to jewelry, we find that these classes are fun and gratifying. There is certainly fun and useful material taught in the home-economics classes. Cooking, sewing and family living classes teach us everything from food budgeting to embroidery. With the help of our teachers, all the pieces and ingredients seem to come together. 9$ Math: It All Adds Up While the freshmen are studying algebra, the sophomores arc constructing angles for geometry, and the juniors are doing their adv. algebra. The seniors are racking their brains with subjects like trigonometry, math analysis, etc. ... They soon find out, though, from Miss Matsis that “They don't need to know much ‘fancy' math — as long as they can add, subtract, multiply and divide. Oh, well ... Mr. Richard McNamer: math. “Happiness is ninth graders % Mr. Carl Gustafson: math. “It clearly follows that Mr. Doug Backhaus: math. If at first you don’t succeed, you’re about like everybody else.” Mr. Richard Maxwell: math and industrial arts. Mr. Bill Anderson: math. “Every disability one has, is a tool for making others more comfortable with you. Mr. Ken Kiclty: math. — Miss Matsis’ “morning magic show” is still goin’ strong — Mr. Gustafson’s rugby shirts and Levi's — Mr. Backhaus’ daily joke-time enlightens the class hour — Mr. Anderson’s relates a story to every problem — the teachers seem to change class rooms every hour — Mr. Kielty’s methods of getting our attention — “fair enough?” 97 Mr. Terry Laine: biology. “Boy scouts motto: ‘be prepared'. It’s A Matter Of Matter Mr. James Thomas; dept, chairperson: chemistry. “Old chemists never die, they just fail to react. Mr. James Baxter: biology. “A good student body, good classes, good hockey — should add up to a really good year! We are at the science department meeting, but where arc the teachers? One is busy correcting carbon copies of student lab experiments. Another teacher is out on a field trip, collecting water samples. One is fiberglassing a shark but he will come as soon as he has put in the teeth. And last but not least, the physics teacher is setting up the apparatus for tomorrow's experiment. Who knows? Maybe someday they’ll conquer all elements of West High. Mr. Donald Paulson: physics. 98 Students enjoy the relaxed pace of the language classes. Students Accent The Subject If one spent a day in West’s language lab, one would hear a variety of sounds. Spanish students talk so fast, even a native Spaniard wouldn’t understand them. German students arc busy worrying about Mr. Hargreaves' 6 3 4 point tests, while the French try to improve their nasals. One thing that ALL the language students experience, is the chill of the language lab on cool winter mornings. Mr. Fred Oliver: French. King of the Miccs. 99 We’ll Be Mr. Vernon Sanders: phy. cd. and health. Because of their higher level of maturity,! enjoy being associated with West High students. Fine And Fit Forever Ms. Joanne Hulct: phy. cd. and health. “Tennis is a swinging sport!” As we briskly walked to the Kenwood courts for tennis class, we looked back on our years of phy. cd. and health at West. There were the first days of gym when we couldn’t figure out why we all looked so sickly. What a relief to discover it was only the lights that gave us that green tinge. We’ll never forget Mr. Sanders’ evasion of that hush-hush topic ... sex. By the time we were upperclassmen, we were used to the green faces and the informative health classes. Mr. Richard Voss: phy. cd. and health. “Happiness is a golf club.' 100 It’s a basket! — specdball — breaking fingernails and spraining thumbs playing volleyball — films in Mr. Voss’s first aid class — Mrs. Kairis asking, ‘Are you hurt, are you hurt?” — washing gym clothes every week — Ms. Hulct leaving West 101 Students enjoy bowling class at the Uptown Lancs. Lights, Camera, Action! An auditorium program is coming up so we take charge. We’re a dedicated group that works well together. We know our stage and we have mastered the use of its equipment; the lights, curtains and sound system. We construct and paint each prop used on stage. We try to make each program special with what we’ve got. No matter what group wants to perform, we’re always there to help It’s a small group, and individual effort is a must, make the program a success. Ms. Rita Curtain: business. ’l believe no student should graduate from senior high school without having had a business class to prepare them.’’ Business Is Booming! We find that the students taking business courses arc looking ahead. The clerical skills taught will come in handy after high school. Such a variety of courses arc offered! Every level of typing is available. There are “e-z courses like notetaking or, one can learn how to work the new fanglcd calculators. Whatever they choose, the students work at their own speed making for a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere. 103 Give Us The Tools . . . Our industrial arts teachers are known for their ingenuity. They can draw up plans for a house or fix a television set. They can do anything from small household repairs to shooting a close-up of someone’s teeth. With all the new classes the department offers this year, we learn a lot of useful and fun things that can help us in the future. Someone goofed, but this skillful hand will soon have it put back together again. Mr. Thomas Kluge: industrial arts. A lot of students have changed since Jefferson, and it’s for the better! 104 Mr. Robert Larson: industrial arts. Lots of current overcomes resistance!” The industrial arts students can ‘turn on’ with all the equipment that the department offers. Mr. Robert Mansion: industrial arts. And We’ll Finish The Job — we need another door on the dark room — repairing irons and toasters — designing houses — surveying Lake of the Isles — equipment from Jefferson — having geometry and calculus sure helps — what kind of welding? 105 Working To Accomplish Wc look forward to work program every day. It is a break from the regular pace of classrooms, although we receive class credit while working. By holding a job, we get the real flavor of having a career — helpful for our post high school plans. Wc also learn to have a sense of true responsibility. But most of all, the money that wc earn, always comes in handy! Wcstitcs Carolyn Johnson and Lisa Spiclman take part in the work program with Burger King. WECEP stands for Work, Experience. Career, Exploration Program. It is a program designed to help 14 and 15 year olds who find a full day of classes difficult to handle. The student has math, English and social studies classes and works half a day at such jobs as busboy, carry-out, waitress, dishwasher and other entry-level jobs. Mr. Gene Smith SHE’S got a good job! Senior Lorna Chapin, works at the local MacDonalds. Mr. Gene Smith: work program. — on the job — careers and more careers — experiencing the real world of business — planning our future — a new way to learn — class credit, experience and money, all in one! — short school day — the best of two worlds — training in — earning money for ourselves 107 Who works together as a strong unit?
