K,''. the notion of looking on at life has always been hateful to me. what am i if i am not a participant? in order to be, i must participate. 9 10 i am the people β the mob β the crowd β the mass, do you know that all the great work of the world is done through me? 11 'A what kind of people do they think we are? 12 good people all of every sort give ear unto my song; and if you find it wondrous short, it cannot hold you long 13 to say yes, you have to sweat and roll up your sleeves and plunge both hands into life up to the elbows ... jean anouilh ' CHOO ' activities homecoming court β left to right: d. odland, d. story, m. kidd, g. williams, c. hanvik, p. klocksien, m. sweeney, n bc i ;on, c. nadeau, m. guthrie, m. oyaas, s. semmer, p. woodrich, m. culhane, s. lampson, s. davis, t. hobart, a. landberg, t. ht.mesy. the cream of our crop gradually, the auditorium crowd settled down, the lights dimmed and the curtains opened to reveal the magnificent stage, there was a certain awe about the auditorium as students, teachers, parents and alumni wondered who our new 1974 homecoming queen would be. slowly the radiant attendants and queen candidates were escorted down the aisle, even more slowly, the page followed carrying the ever important envelope, finally, as the tension reached it's peak, sue lampson was crowned queen to reign over all of the day's activities, as our new queen received kisses of congratulations from the football captains, she placed her john hancock on the homecoming proclamations, applause swept through the auditorium as our homecoming court descended the stage. within the quiet and peaceful surroundings of lake of the isles, the homecoming court is found take five! β after a hectic morning, the homecoming royalty relaxes in the home of mary baron. 16 what can you say? β sue lampson hits cloud nine. 1974 homecoming queen suzanne lampson sophomore attendant gail williams junior attendant carol hanvik fun and spirit filled our day la de da β our sophomores are the best β la de da β the very very best β la de da shout the sophomore cheerleaders, chris curry, joy carlson, and amy linner. simply great .. there was a lot of spirit in the air ... what a riot the parade was good the whole way through .. it was fun roller skating ... very rowdy, with typical high school spirit .. a lot of enthusiasm was shown . we should have gotten the whole school on it ... i wish that they'd widen the gates to get out of the field . i was so hot. i just about died in my uniform . just great . . many individual groups got involved ... it was fantastic ... the ambassador motel was just great . . oh, wow, the dance was a riot ... i wish i could've gone ... we had a fantastic evening ... the band, rue delight, was real good it should've been longer ... i had so much fun ... it was a great day, the entire day was just somethin' else spirit comes in different sizes, as shown by our youngest cheerleader, heather. a smile, blowing in the wind is thrown out by senior attendant, victoria benson. connie elliott and clint hoover proved as the west high rouser brought the whole auditorium to their feet, the homecoming that the alumni never lose the west court waited in anticipation for the fun filled day. spirit. 16 jo e, lorraine, and john pull the german club along with the help of snoopy and his sopwith camel. flagging down the crowd with their joyful grins, hi-hoz debbie mcnelly, kim thompson, barb harwood, and gayle borne are light hearted. the sophs showed what the west cowboys were made of by blasting the central pioneers in the sophomore skit. mr. voss is honored for his outstanding dedication as football coach for the past fourteen years. homecoming queen sue lampson and her escort rue delight, entertains the many couples who attended this year's mark culhane dance to the music of rue delight. homecoming dance, held at the ambassador motel. sue pontius, gayle borne and debbie mcnelly have their dates going in circles as they step to the beat of the dcho trail ramblers. the mass of funny-looking people listen closely as sue davis annouces the 1974 daisey mae and marryin' sam. daisey mae β’- vicky benson and marryin' sam β mike furney look delighted after receiving their new set of luggage. a victorious smile flashes across the face of sheriff debbie love after the hard- fought capture of another unsuspecting male. the senior hockey players look gay as they dance up a storm with the senior highsteppers. 20 fiddle tucked tight, mr. baxter and the echo trail ramblers prove that rock and roll isn't everything! kicking with hiking boots on is a little abnormal -everyone's watching kathy becht, even the wallpaper! we're going country style! i wish the jail would of had reclining seats ... it was a fun dance to chaperone . it was really a blast .. it cost four bucks if you took a varsity lineman ... euglena??? .. our sixth grade Virginia reel came in handy .. it was fun getting married for six bits in the biffy the sheriffs weren't quick enough .. the line was so long, that we needed another marriage booth .. it was good and rowdy ... it was fun to dance with the hockey players ... i ran out of nickels ... i was glad that all the candidates got a chance to marry people ... my date was a good kisser ... i was reel pleezed with daisey mae and marryin' sam ... we proved at sadie that we really know how to make a good time ... enough cannot be said about baxter's band β they made the night! the long l'ne fΒ°r the marriage booth rang bells, but isn't living together the in thing? the new mr. and mrs. dan flanagan (alias: lynn tyler) make it official! 21 the young generation enlightened the holdiay auditorium with a merry medley of tunes. we present holiday spirit contributing to a chilly, cheery, winter night were our choir, young generation, band, and highsteppers. they shared amidst us, their glorious voices, orchestral precision, and fancy footwork, all in the tone of a musical array of holiday spirit and joy. our lively young generation began the evening performance by displaying for us, their imaginative musical talents followed by our light-footed highsteppers. the evening ended with a powerful crescendo of sound produced by the combined abilities of our choir and band. adding a kick to the night, were the highsteppers. dancing to it's the holdiay season by andy williams. with their performance of jazz gloria , the choir and band, together, produce a well-arranged number. 22 with disbelief, chip baker and kelly malone are crowned mr. the west high auditorium held the serene voices of sheila blizzard and miss snowflake by mary guthrie and Steve Cornelius. and kaihy singing john denver's goodbye again rompers jumped, toppled, tumbled, and collided on the football field during the annual sno-daze romp held after school for all westites. sno-daze sparkle on the class of 1976 showed the real west high spirit through a brilliantly performed sno- daze week, we proved that westites know how to take advantage of the minnesota winter β and bananas too! through thick and thin, through snow drifts and blizzards, we produced a beautiful talent and coronation auditorium, we took to the snow for our free-for-all romp, only to attend a magnificent dance to end the chilling night. 23 doug longjohn kellam and sheila longjohn dornbach eye their next prey. cheryll Oliver and sue kiel live it up to the sounds of the castaways . black unity goes citywide our week was one of culture, learning and pride, we brought in two speakers, mr. calley and dr. a. sullivan, who captured us with their memorable talks, our auditorium began with murmuring voices, dim lights, drum beats and words spoken with heart felt emotion in our dances, the fashion show portrayed the traditional and modern dress of our people, that night, the west area schools gathered at central, we all contributed to the presentation, ate soul food, and viewed cultural displays, we proved that together we can make it happen! elbows swinging and lips pursed, carmen lisa wistfully serenades the audience to gets into the song β funky president. the sounds of in love we grow. ms. luwal and drummer, william doughty stimulate the students and faculty with inspirational impressions of the black history week skit. lisa, donna, marguerite, ozina, wayne, kathy, connie, karen, and gwen join their voices together in a chorus of three x love. barbara parker (b.t.) expresses herself with mechanical movements. mr alley, a former military aid for former president mxon gives a fascinating presentation. an informal meeting of interested west high students, listen to dr. a. sullivan speak on the different aspects of the black language. toya curtis and billy smith start off the fashion show with colorful outfits and bright smiles. 25 arriving at highstepper's ball early, cynthia adjusts her boyfriend's bow tie picture perfect. captivated by the varied moods and music of the evening, the outstanding turnout of westite couples proved the highstepper's ball to be another magnificient success. an effervescent attractive couple, sally tuthill and her date enjoy the elegant atmosphere. full of life and pep, karen becht dances her heart away with her dad, who was a chaperone at the dance. kicking up Jenny anderson and kelly goranson, early arrivers at highsteppers, dance on an almost empty dance floor. greg fox takes time out to dance with mrs. becht β a dance chaperone. the band star , made the evening swing, providing the entertainment much to the delight of the attending couples. an evening you could really get into the music .. people who didn't wear tuxes looked just as nice as those who did cherwien and furney should've taken dancing lessons .. and it didn't cost any more than homecoming! the dance started at 8, but the ball started at 11 ... it was really a success βgreat turnout ... great band ... woman's club was appropriate since the girls had to foot the bill .. 55c for pop! .. the doorman was cute ... i'm glad the dance is still formal, it shouldn't change my dad stepped all over my feet .. . i got a kick out of it! this year's nhs was bursting full of ideas for both it's members and the school, our activities ranged from choosing graduation announcements to a symposium on mental health, the varied talents of west high students were displayed in the traditional fine arts auditorium, as the year came to a close, the nhs luncheon was held to welcome new members. 28 jane and miss westby review plans to visit the nancy snustad performs with minnesota orchestra during a rehearsal. excellence in the fine arts auditorium. 29 novice debate β front row, left to right: b. taylor, a. sarles, a. Christiansen, I. britzius, e. sotnak, a. keith. varsity debate β back row: k. savage, j. paulson, d. lindquist, j. wesley, r. banyard, r. weiner. not pictured: p. brashear, d. miller, r. pearson, j. parker, j. welby. jim parker displays his smooth skillful delivery during a rebuttal speech. we talk it up it's debaters like us, that worked long and hard hours in research to develop our skills, we discovered that there's a lot more involved in debate than just argument, that after experience, your skills of reasoning and analysis show much improvement, it's a lot of work, but very excellent background for dealing with people in the future in the outside world. 30 we tell it all we devoted much time and work to forensics for the privilege of becoming members of the national forensic league, under the careful direction of mrs. plant, we've earned degrees of distinctive honor, and we've also gained the knowlege and training which we experienced throughout our activities, we will strive for higher esteem during our lifetime membership. during a forensic league meeting, sec. fran lafleur raises an important point of discussion. mrs. plant provides diligent pres, marianne oyaas and jim dubois discuss the upcoming speech tournament, and the guidance in advising the league. categories in which they will particiapte. national forensic league β front row left to right: I. 'cornelia, did you hear a drip?' ... the boat was rocking so much, the scenery fell apart ... the french accents were great ... 'oh that chipmunk!! ... the class of 75 has done it again! everyone get's in on the act as the purser explains that emily's life-saving attempt has captured the stowaway. upon docking in paris, emily, dick, and leo attempt to sneak measle-stricken cornelia past the french medical inspector. our hearts were young steward β kirk willford mrs. skinner β pam nelson cornelia skinner β jane carlson otis skinner β jim dubois emily kimbrough β polly preston purser β bill bevis stewardess β annette babcock dick winters β bart cannon admiral β tim olson harriet st. john β kathy shaw Winifred blaugh β kim olson leo mcevoy β kirk friedman inspector β mary guthrie therese β sally tuthill madame elise β kathy lynch monsieur de la croix β john falls window cleaner β jerry anderson director βted stelten 39 we got spirit yes we do! walking down the hall one day, we noticed a group of girls jumping up and down on the stage during snack break, they were yelling something we couldn't decipher but it sounded like la .. de . . da. gradually, we found that all the girls wore the same outfit 4 out of 5 days a week and we figured they were grubs, but when they started clapping their hands and stamping their feet during our history test, we had to find out who these wierdos were, after a short investigation, we discovered they were cheerleaders. sophomore squad β first row, left to right: a. iinner, g. williams, c. 'quick, here comes the sightseer bus' . . preview winona ... cheerleader's dance ... 'the boilermaker' pep fests pulled muscles ... flips ... one of the 'better' years for mrs. morgan and mr. alien ... snack break meetings ... headaches .. pressure-packed games ... new uniforms ... babbitt ... 'our girls in green' . . only ten of us .. henry arena ... new cheers hoarse voices cheering!!! 41 they really can kick! the highsteppers really have what it takes nice legs they're always so careful to have nice, and different, school uniforms i don't think they've ever been quite as busy it's fun to watch them on stage and see the new steps they've made up with each new dance they look better i've heard about those highstepper overnights my ticket said 'wash the highsteppers' i'm surprised new kids made it through initiation i can't believe they practice all year i'm surprised the old kids made it through initiation quite a variety of interesting personalities great looking bunch we sure get a kick out of them! jacqui looks on as her cohorts perform, unfortunately, only eight can dance on stage, of course, the others always clap a perfected dance β homecoming's dancing in the moonlight couldn't be a better example of the highstepper's hard work. highsteppers β front row, left to right: k.becht; co-capt., b.stack; treas., a. landberg, l.wright, s.davis; co-capt. second row: k.furney, j.ness, l.sikes, k.malone. back row: a.streitz, s.pelers, c.wukotich, a.baron, m.schwob, k.birkeland, j.dedon, m.walsh, a.healy, d.dornbach. not pictured: m.baron. 42 mommy, mommy, what comes next? - susan, one of the co-captains, shows the highsteppers a step during one of the grueling summer practices, many hours of these workouts will make them better. in the spotlight β highsteppers show their routine during a night game at parade stadium. debbie is caught in a flurry of pom-poms as the highsteppers go over palming at hockey, they found it really helps instill pep β and warmth. senior becky stack performs the opening kick of kiki dee , her smile carries a million words β or are those all teeth? 43 serving, west high style no matter how big the crowd, the service club serves west best .. . smiling faces ... every year the variety of candy gets larger., green and white balloons . everyone hurrying around to satisfy people's needs .. the big barrel of ice cold pop ... mr. thomas really puts in a hand as advisor ... it would be nice to see them at more events .. at homecoming time the service club puts in a lot of time and energy to make sure the people are satisfied margaret towne digs into the money to serve westβs teachers, students, and neighbors alike during the afternoon homecoming football game. future westites make their wishes known and are served in hopes they'll one day serve others. with the variety of candy, pop, and popcorn, the service club has on hand, it's hard to decide which tastes best. service clubβfirst row, left to right: a. sarles, k. beckman. second row: g. geiselhart, j. holmes, g. borne, third row: d. mcnelly. not pictured: m. towne. 44 business club β left to right: j.kumpula; sec., s.anders; historian, s.hess; parliamentarian, j.juntilla; vice pres, not pictured: l.hicks; pres., k.kissell; treas., mrs. ruth hammer; advisor. office work is their business we're called business club, office club, and room 222. with our members' combined group effort, we organized and planned a variety of activities around west and around the community, our business club is a branch of a city wide structure, and many of our members participate in the work program, which is a good advantage, this year, we organized a newspaper and also had our annual fund raiser breakfast, our office club is a good working unit preparing us to apply our skills to the working world. 45 ski club β first row, left to right: mr. hargreaves; advisor, e. goldstien, m. cherwien, c. Carlson. we storm the slopes the difference between ski club and ski team is that we ski in our free time for enjoyment and not to get ahead, on each trip the warm weather and perfect snow, with only a couple of rocks, made it hard to leave the slopes of powderhorn, indianhead, and porcupine mountains, with all of the wipeouts, it was amazing to find that our only casualty was when chris curry broke off both of the tips of her skis, the people at the youth hostel flattered us. they said they liked having people come from west high because we were always such a well mannered group, with that kind of encouragement and the beautiful weather, our season proved to be all uphill. with stocking caps pulled tight and a twinkle in their eyes, sophomores cindy Cornelius.
