. 1974 HESPERIAN volume 65 published by the students of WEST HIGH minneapolis, minnesota The Waking I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I feel my fate in what I cannot fear. I learn by going where I have to go. We think by feeling. What is there to know? I hear my being dance from ear to ear. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. Of those so close beside me, which are you? God bless the Ground! I shall walk softly there And learn by going where I have to go. Light takes the Tree; but who can tell us how? The lowly worm climbs up a winding stair; I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. Great Nature has another thing to do To you and me; so take the lively air. And, lovely, learn by going where to go. This shaking keeps me steady. I should know. What falls away is always. And is near. I wake to sleep, and take my waking slow. I learn by going where I have to go. West had the faculty, the students, and the administration to do it. This year saw two new administrators: Mr. Panser as Vice-Principal and Mr. Eikaas as a part time counselor. Both came from Jefferson. Mr. Allen is assisting the principal, and is in charge of the Student Council, and the new Service Center. TOP left to right: Mr. Edward Carlson; Principal. A day at West would not have been complete without cooks, janitors, nurses, aides, librarians, and clerks. Few people will forget what study hall was to be used for, after being reminded daily by the study hall aides. We would not have survived without the lunchroom janitors to help us out with our table manners. If not for people like this, West could never have gotten anywhere at all! Our Mathematics Department may have been one of the finer equipped ones in the city this year. We had two computers, five teachers and 13 different courses. The course content varied from Basic Math to Calculus. Few have forgotten the day we all forgot to bring our compasses to Mr. Kielty and Mr. Backhaus and Mr. Gustafson's 148 Algebra-Trig lessons. From Fencing to Trampoline. The department staff gave all they had teaching Phy-Ed, Health and coaching. Students selected courses in beginning art, open studio, and art history. With these courses they even conquered the world of cubism — even without the ability to draw! Home Ec. offered many creative and artistic courses in home and family living in preparing foods, and in making clothing. The courses were offered to both boys and girls, and for the first time, classes were expanded to include Jefferson students. For the prospective home-maker. West had everything to offer. They armed many students with skills that would help them work their way through college, and that would enable them to start work in big-business offices directly after high school. they're working on it! For those Westites who didn't mind the loss of shut-eye due to endless zero hours, the Work Program provided the students with the chance to combine a job with school. The students took on jobs anywhere from hustling around McDonald's, to being a store clerk. As the work force of tomorrow will show, it was well worth it. girls become industrious Although Industrial Arts was traditionally male, West made it a co-ed department with the infiltration of females. Along with the regular classes of drafting, electronics, surveying and mechanics. West offered a course in aviation which gave students the opportunity to spend three hours a day at the Airport. These classes prepared students for many good jobs, as well as some rewarding hobbies. TOP: Mr. Rehder takes a spin in his flashy racing car during a free weekend. MIDDLE: Mr. Robert Larson. Probably the most exciting game of the season was the Southwest game. Each team held the lead, but the Cowboys pulled away in the last minutes of the game to take it 48-44. We had a team full of experienced players with seven returning lettermen, plus players from last years strong sophomore team. With the skill and leadership of Coach Kielty, and Captains Bill Baron and Steven Sawyer, the team managed to end the season high in city standings even though the Mpls. The hockey team with it's great defensemen, also had powerful and aggressive forward lines. In the Region 5 semi-finals the forwards displayed their strength, coming from behind 3-1 to beat Southwest 4-3. This kind of strength was present throughout the season, despite the many team injuries. Captain Bill Rinker was injured in one of the first games, but he came back again as a hard-hitting defenseman. The following week our boys repeated their success by crushing Marshall-U 19-0. With high spirits and determination, West met Henry in a night game at Parade Stadium. The undefeated Patties capitalized on our mistakes and trounced us 42-14. Under a hard rain West played Central for their homecoming. The boys were surprisingly beat 34-0. The team seemed to be falling apart. Yet on Homecoming Day September 28 — West bounced back with a spectacular 20-0 win over North. The highlight of the season was the Edison game in which our Cowboys made a touchdown. After six games only West had scored on them. Although the team's record could have been improved on, it should be noted that full effort was put into each and every meet. ai birds fly high Even though there were many new faces on the badminton team this year, you wouldn't know it by the record they ended up with. Where will they go from here? They've all become sophomores in high school and they can't turn back. They've got to go on. But do they really know where to go? As sophomores they've tried out the new opportunities offered at West. They've been running to the pop machine to quench their thirst between classes. They've been going to Sam Drucker's store to slack their hunger pains during snack break. They've been going to the dances and school games. They've been going to room 300, to have fun or to study during snack break or a free period. They've been going to McDonald's during lunch instead of Burger King. That's where they've been going this year. But where will they go from here? Many of them probably aren't sure and a bit confused. One thing certain, is the need to enjoy two more years at West.
