The Senior Class Presents DAWNING of a DECADE HESPERIAN 1970, VOLUME 61 West High School Minneapolis, Minnesota A significant part of our lives has set into history just as the sun sets into the horizon at dusk. But tomorrow comes the dawn, and it generates a decade which we must lead in all its undespairing quests. In view of the adventing era, the HESPERIAN staff has produced this book as both a reflection and projection of each individual at West. The journal of this epoch will continue its documentation for years, so let us begin our account with the memoirs included within — HESPERIAN 70 2 Table of Contents Foreword 2 Introduction DAWNING OF A DECADE IN: 4 Student Life 18 Organizations 40 Boys' Sports 54 Girls' Sports .. ... 66 Academics . 72 Faculty 82 Underclassmen 90 Seniors 106 Index 136 Closing Page 140 3 6 9 10 11 13 14 17 IN STUDENT LIFE May I have your attention please a new parking lot .. students act at the Guthrie . .. painted bleachers ... a pop machine formals and a serenade for attendants and queen human relations .., drama club . . first day frustrations Miss Minnesota liberal dress code welcoming a new decade of student participation DAWNING OF A DECADE An Evening To Remember On a frosty September evening high spirited Westites entered the boy's gym to attend the annual Cheerleaders' Dance. As everyone entered they were greeted by decorative posters, streamers and balloons of green and white. Dancers rocked to the heavy beat of the renowned Infinity's End. Rollicking initiations and clever ornaments were just a part of the memories taken home that eventful evening. Lynette Loken decorates with streamers balloons and pompons, as the hour of Cheerleaders' Dance nears. Tennis shoes are great for dancing jests sophomore Cheerleader Cindy Conroy as she demonstrates the latest dance. Adding an exuberant sound to the Cheerleaders' Dance, the Infinity's End play a soulful variety of songs. 19 West High Breaks Tradition As Homecoming '69 altered tradition at West. The court was presented in full length formals during the morning auditorium. Then Mr. An-tholz serenaded the royalty with two songs. The afternoon program of skits, dances and cheers preceded the parade. At the Calhoun Beach Manor amid the sounds of the High Spirits, couples danced a finale to a most eventful and memorable day. The first of the attendants to ascend the stage Barb Brumfield creates an air of elegance in her green velvet vesture. Tarzan Bonnie Ress monkeys around with fellow decorators after completing last minute decorations. Cathy Pringle puts her best roller forward as she partakes in the student council bleacher painting contest. Surrealism, Jive And Spitfire Marsha Feela grins smuggly while giving her sales pitch for the novelty garter sale sponsored by Y-Teens. Snappy cheerleaders holler uproariously with best team is in the green for awaiting parade spectators. With a burst of determination Tony Currey leaps through the hoop and leads his teammates onto the field, where zealous shouts of Raw Raw Raw welcome them. 24 Senior steppers Michele Amsel, Nora Dahlgren and Becky Swanson add zest to their chauffered Cadillac. Hands Off! yells John Clifford, the Cowboys' fullback, as he strives for added yardage against his oncoming opponent. As the closing moments of Homecoming draw near. Queen Janice Emery and escort Dave Lipstein reflect on her reign. 25 Unity Is Stressed in Election's A wide variety of original buttons, posters and slogans flooded the school during the 1969 senior election week. This was the first year that the grade point average was lowered to 2.5 and all of the candidates were made honorary members of the senior board. The new senior class cabinet was; President — jerry Hedum, Vice President — Bonnie Ress, Secretary — Ellen Lewin and Treasurer — Mark Sikes. Candidate lorry Hedum promises responsible leadership and an active senior year for all if he is elected president. I'm voting for Mark Sikes and if you're not, you can come see me 'bout it! says Jack in the Box, Bubba Foster. 26 '•■ it v Tweed and Gary Cohen, Andy Campbell's soup kids, • • him their support as they sing out praises. The Spurrlows, sponsored by Chrysler Corporation perform a superlative production number to promote auto safety. 27 Meek Maids Drag Bashful Beaus Spiffy attire and wild stunts became the focus of attention as the candidates for Daisy Mae and Marryin' Sam were chosen during the morning auditorium. The beauty and the beast of the day were Katie Anderly and Tony Currey. West's hillbillies did their own version of the shipoopie and brought the curtain down. That evening everyone did the Ozark Stomp to the washtub band known as the Infinity's End. Adding a final touch to a classic evening, Ricardo Cavalcanti serenaded all with The Girl From Ipanema. As underclassmen relax, a friendly exchange of jibes ends in howls of side splittin' laughter. 28 Country bumpkins, senior Highsleppers and their nimble partners shipoopee to a swinging hillbilly tune. Whooping it up, Dogpatch belle Pam Meyer and her dashing beau play a quick game of patty cake. To The Rompin' Sadie Hoedown Peggy Day flashes a sly grin of triumph as her own li' Abner, Jim England, slips the ring on her finger. Before moseying on down to the auditorium, dolled up Daisy Maes and Lil' Abners dally in the halls. Senior stomper Kathy Brumfield takes a mad fling. 29 Holiday Auditorium Spreads Cheer The 1969 holiday week at West added a touch of holiday spirit. The Spanish classes spent the week making pinatas which were judged by Miss Westby, Miss Peterson and Mr. Lundgren. An angel constructed creatively by Vicki Hodroff won first prize. The Latin classes celebrated the Saternalia, a Roman holiday similar to Christmas, by exchanging gifts and eating Roman food. A highlight for the school was a program performed by the band and choir. The groups entertained the school with many popular Hanukkah and Christmas songs. The High Steppers ended the week with their traditional holiday dance to the tune of Marne. Waiting for the next cue from Mr. Antholz, the pop group blend their voices during their Christmas holiday debut Practicing a new number centering around girl and boy dolls, the High Steppers work enthusiastically for perfection. The hallway stairs become an effective rehearsal area for jovial High Steppers shortly before the holiday auditorium. And Enlivens West High Stepper elves, affectionately recognized as subordinate clauses, dance a sprite jig outside Santa's Workshop where presents are gathered for the Santa Anonymous drive. Carole of the Drums and other Christmas and Hanukkah songs echo through the auditorium as the new orchestra performs for Westites during the annual holiday auditorium. 31 Juniors Reign Supreme During the Passing on his royal heritage to Mogie Moshou, former Mr. Blizzard Jerry Hedum, crowns him with snow. Bird is the word sings the infamous Lunch Club as member John Parrott trips daintily across the stage. An innocent bystander trys vainly to prevent an icy face wash from a burly junior but finds herself plummeted with an avalanche of snow during West's Sno-Daze activities. 32 1970 Sno-Daze Activities During Sno-Daze activities, underclassman Jim Houle struggles to maintain possession of the football as he watches the quick advance of a grimly determined senior. Mother Goose and her gander (Kirk Hokenson and Annie Martinetto) deliver a satirical commentary between numbers. The sophomore’s energetic pre-game warm-ups prepare them for a battle of the sexes, a brutal broomball contest. Seniors' Portrayal of Charley's Lovestruck, Jack and Charley enthusiastically describe their latest flames to Lord Babberly, a friend from school. I'm no ordinary woman, teases Charley's Aunt in hopes of discouraging her persistent admirer, Stephen Spettigue. An innocuous deception and its concomitant complications provided the frolicking gaity prevalent in the 1970 Senior Class Play, Charley's Aunt. Enticing their girlfriends into a week long visit, Charley and Jack promised that Charley's aunt would chaperone. But then the duo learned that she would be three days late. In desperation, they persuaded Lord Babberly to impersonate her. Complications arose. Elderly Spettigue, the girls guardian, fell in love with the imposter. Attracted by her wealth. Jack's father becomes a second suitor. Finally, the real aunt arrived and pandemonium ran rampant. At the finish, everyone, save poor deluded Spettigue, exchanged wedding vows — a fit end for a fine comedy. 34 Lord Babberly, alias Donna Lucia, takes advantage of his predicament during an intimate chat with Kitty and Amy. Aunt Is Heralded As a Success The unexpected entrance of Lord Babberly's long lost sweetheart, Ela Delahay, abruptly interrupts a tranquil afternoon teaparty and sweeps the astonished Babbs off his feet. Exchanging vows. Jack and Kitty cherish precious moments alone in the garden and are oblivious to the bedlam around. The Cast and Production Staff Stephen Spettigue........... ... Poetry readings, a fashion show, rock bands, classroom video tapes, mural painting, experimental films, Israeli dancing, a mass media show, do-it-yourself sculpture, a guitar jam session, one act plays, light shows, and picture displays were only a small part of the many activities that students were engaged in during the NHS Music Arts Festival held February 23-27. A new dress code, permitting students to wear anything “as long as it is decent was introduced at an all-student auditorium, another Council plan. A closed-circuit television system was purchased with pop machine royalties and candy sale profits. All-City Student Council members worked directly with the School Board this year in an attempt to improve administration student communication. Trying to improve communications between schools on a state level. West sent two representatives to the All-State Student Council meeting where a new constitution was constructed. The varsity opened their schedule by knocking off South 6-0 in the preview. After this encouraging victory. West was pitted against powerful Southwest. In the first half, West scored on one of two long offensive drives while holding Southwest to six points. The second half saw Southwest pull away to win 30-6. After suffering defeats at the hands of Roosevelt and Central, the Cowboys played Vocational at Parade Stadium. In one of their finer games, West took an 8-0 lead and threatened to ruin Vocational's homecoming. But the Volts thwarted the Cowboys' aspirations with a strong comeback, which handed the team an 18-8 defeat. VARSITY FOOTBALL - FRONT ROW: J. Bedor, S. Klocksien, B. Maas. Co. capt. K. Only three letter-men returned from last season's squad. The two returning seniors, Glen Gersbach and Ray Usher were made co-captains. Gersbach was 7-2-1 for the season, while Usher was 7-3. They had the best records on the squad this season. The other returning letterman, Charles Selcer, was injured early in the season. West's grapplers opened the season on a promising note when they defeated Central in the first meet of the season. Glen Gersbach and Ray Usher won their matches by decisions, while Peder Ronning and Paul Tollefson won their matches by pins. This meet was to be the only victory for the Cowboys for the entire season. Sensing defeat, a West opponent finds the end in sight. VARSITY WRESTLING — FRONT ROW: G. Green, B. Crowley, K. Crabb, A. These five games found West playing the top teams in the city for a second time. The Cowboys won their first five regular season games before losing. Some personal achievements in these victories were goalie Ward Johnson's shut out against Vocational, Wizzy Wyatt's hat tricks against Marshall and North, and Tim Hydeen's hat trick against Vocational. The Cowboys rebounded from losses to Washburn and Edison by defeating Central 10-1. The only success in the extra five games was a 1-1 tie against Edison. The award, the first basketball trophy West has won in four years, was carried home by the team after victories over favored Austin and Brainerd in the Paul Bunyan tourney. After defeating Vocational and Southwest in their first two regular season games, the Cowboys were upset by South. In the next game, West dealt Roosevelt its first loss in a one point decision. Amassing impressive victories over Edison and North, the Cowboys remained in the conference title picture until a dissapointing loss to Marshall late in the season. Highlights of the year included Tom Seehau-sen's 36 points against Edison, John Bedor's four clutch free throws in the Roosevelt victory, Mark Zander's 20 points and 20 rebounds in the North game, and Vance Rasmussen's 20 points against Central. Barb Stevens, the lone senior on the team, and sophomore Liz Bailey were particularly outstanding Other bright notes of the season were the new coach, Mrs. Carlson, and a swinging new bus driver who provided transportation to the local ice cream parlors. Sophomore Kay Toivonen swims a smooth backstroke despite the jitters in her first city preliminary swim meet. Coach Carlson checks the stop watch as sophomore Liz Bailey finishes first in her heat in the butterfly medley. 68 Tennis Team Weathers The Cold In spite of a chilly autumn, the girls' tennis team practiced diligently at the Kenwood Courts. Starting the season with almost a complete turnover of players, the team gained experience for next year. After winning the first match 6-1 over Roosevelt, the team suffered a very close loss to Henry. A promising sophomore, Vange Checheris, filled the third singles position highly successfully. Yes- for the first time in twenty five years an orchestra was organized under the supervision of Mr. Antholz, who incorporated the talent of students from West and Jefferson. The new ensemble made its debut at a pre-Thanksgiving auditorium. Busy! That word described the band as it appeared in many school programs. Other activities included a snappy half-time show for Homecoming and a pep band that livened up various pep fests, basketball, football, and hockey games. Aquarius was one of the catchy tunes on a widening range that were sung by the choir. A new pop group, which sang many of the more popular tunes of today, was also formed. The newly-formed orchestra performs for many school programs where the group displays combined talent. 73 A Wider Gamut of Experiences Beginning second quarter, the seniors were offered an elective course two days a week and attended their regular English classes the remaining three days. Electives offered were: Advanced Placement, an in depth study of poetry and other works; Novel Criticism, a study of the structure of the novel; Mass Media, a criticism of the contemporary medias; and Humanities, a comparison of world religions. Second semester, juniors also participated in the elective program. Their classes included the Lost Generation, Creative Writing, Science Fiction, Drama, Film, and the Contemporary Novel. Those electives chosen lasted for approximately one quarter each. The end result was a slight shift of responsibility onto the student's shoulder. Kirk Hokanson learns about the complex points of friction reduction as he watches Mr. Waterhouse's demonstration. The magic of the laboratory and its creative powers lured West's students to experiment in several science classes. Biology students took and typed samples of their own blood. A two-week motion laboratory was conducted in physics classes. Among the other labs conducted were ones involving density and friction. Chemistry students worked long hours setting up distillation, oxidation, and density experiments, as well as others. Joe Wendel intently watches Ed Grunseth check for air bubbles before beginning a chemistry experiment. 78 In Understanding Complications Experimental evaluation systems made math a new experience for many West High students. A program was instituted whereby students could select from a group of eight possible methods of study the four they fell would be the most rewarding. Students also could decide what grade they desired at the beginning of each quarter. A fulfillment of the criteria set up for grade in each of the study areas selected would assure the person of at least that mark. As part of the program, a teletype connected to a Honeywell computer was utilized to teach basic programming skills. A committee of students was set up to field any complaints or suggestions. Utilizing West High's computer teletype, Patty Sand works on a complicated program that will do her homework. M. Sikes, Sec. E. Lewin, V.-Pres. B. Ress, Pres. J. Hedum. Reforms Reshape Senior Board The Senior Board, advised by Miss Bradach and presided over by President jerry Hedum, coordinated senior activities throughout the year. A total of fiteen undertakings were proposed by the board, and in an unprecedented move, these suggestions were voted on by the entire senior class. The six items which received enough support to become mandatory were a copy of the Yearbook, a senior issue of the Times, a cap and gown, two tickets to the class play, a ticket to the picnic and a fee to pay for the organ and flowers. Required senior dues, close to twenty dollars the year before, reached an all-time low at twelve thirty-five. Each senior then signed a contract in which he could pledge to pay for and participate in any of the other listed activities. SENIOR BOARD — FRONT ROW: E. Grunseth, D. Specht, C. Pringle, A.
